About the Author
Peter Kropotkin (1842 – 1921) was born a Russian prince, but abandoned his title at the age of twelve. He escaped from his first imprisonment and lived the bulk of his life in exile. Evolution based on mutual aid, instead of competition. We don’t teach that much, but this is the perspective given here. Kropotkin illustrates his ideal “communist†society as one of man helping man, for everyone’s benefit. It’s quite lovely. Read it.
Don't call yourself an anarchist Marxist or far left libertarian until you read this. Great read for anyone into political science.
Kropotkin made some very excellent observations in his criticism of the state and capitalism and an excellent point for organizing society into a stateless, classless civilization. My only issue was that there were a few typos so I brought another publication of the book for a few dollars more from another seller. For the price though, it is a good book. I would definitely recommend fixing the typos. If not for that, I would have given it 5 stars.
Great book Send it to all your Republican friends. Liberals I'm is not enough. Our whole scarcity mentality is what keeps us rats running on the wheel. His confidence that rich people will not mind sharing their big houses is dumb but there at is right on the money.
Well, technically it is an anarchist-communist classic, as Peter (Petr) Kropotkin is considered an ideological founder of communist anarchism. But I find this work a bit dry, perhaps outdated. Some of his other books, essays and articles are more interesting, shorter and still very relevant...but this one is free (public domain), thanks 😉
I've finally gotten around to reading this after years of putting it off. I guess I've become one of those "idlers" Kropotkin spoke of. This book was certainly enlightening, and I would consider myself already a subscriber to anarchist ideology. I've previously read Bakunin, Malatesta, and Goldman, now I can say I've read the Prince. Would highly recommend to anyone who has a basic understanding of socialism, and/or comes from the left. For those that don't I would recommend starting with "Markets, Not Capitalism" put out by Center For a Stateless Society (C4SS) to get a better grasp and shed some light on the pro-capitalist propaganda we've all been raised with and had reinforced into us by society. This author has many good points about how we've gotten where we are, but I feel his agenda was one of aggression. I think we can do better that as humans with thinking minds. I got this book because someone recommended it to me.
Fascinating analysis given when it was written. Particularly relevant today; autonomous collectives offer a better option for humanity than exploitation and alienation.
