I've read several Scenic Driving books from Falcon, and this is probably the worst one. Scenic Driving the Ozarks by Don Kurz is quite good, as is Russ Manning's Scenic Driving Tennessee, but Scenic Driving Kentucky is infuriatingly bad. For example, in their description of the Mammoth Cave area, the authors don't provide any info about cave tours. They merely direct you into the park and then say "going right will take you to the visitor center and the cave tours." That's it! Then they leave the park. This is an absolute joke! Likewise, for Land Between the Lakes, the authors give horribly generic descriptions of the route, while hardly venturing away from The Trace. Author William A. Kappele is a rock hound who has written several rock hounding books, but here his description of how caves are formed (in the Mammoth Cave trip section) is full of misconceptions. He really needs to study this subject -- from real geologists, not his rock hounding buddies. This book is full of entries that contain no worthwhile information whatsoever. Co-author Cora Kappele's name is even misspelled on Page 1. Avoid this book.

Lists several scenic areas which are not well known to visit in Kentucky. PLot your route on a map before you go. Directions for back roads can be a little hard to follow. Print and size of book are easy to use while traveling. I look forward to using it often in the years ahead.

This is a good starting place for searching out interesting drives, but you'll want to go online and/or purchase additional books to get any in-depth information about history or anything else in the area. Gives little more than the actual driving route.

Vicki Constantine Croke has been chronicling animal life for more than two decades—tracking polar bears, Tasmanian devils, and Madagascar’s top predator, the fossa. She now covers animal issues for WBUR-FM, Boston’s NPR news station, on air (Here and Now) and on WBUR’s The Wild Life online. Her work there earned a 2013 regional Edward R. Murrow Award. She is the author of The Lady and the Panda: The True Adventures of the First American Explorer to Bring Back China’s Most Exotic Animal,and The Modern Ark: The Story of Zoos—Past, Present and Future. Croke has worked on nature documentaries for Disney and for the A&E channel and anchored The Secret Life of Animals on NECN-TV. After reading this unforgettable story, I recommended it to three other people who immediately bought it. One friend said she is reading it slowly so she can enjoy every word and being an animal lover, said it 'was the best book she had ever read' and she reads a LOT! At dinner last night, my host said that, after reading some of the book that I had loaned her, went out and bought a copy so she could read the ending in a copy of her own because she felt she needed to own it herself. She told me she sat and cried when she finished the story. She then promptly emailed her mother in Seattle and sister in Wisconsin to acquire a copy as soon as they could. This is a book that encompasses everything I enjoy in a book. It's real, it's exciting and educational, it's emotional, enlightening, extremely satisfying and poignant. What an appreciation I have gained for a great man and great animals. I cannot imagine anyone not being deeply touched by this account.

Born in 1897, during the declining years of the British colonial empire, J.H. “Elephant Bill” Williams was a veteran of both World Wars. After World War I, he went to Burma and made a career of overseeing the captive elephants which helped to move teak wood from the jungles of Burma to the markets of the world.Williams had an innate love for the Burmese elephants and they loved him back. Whereas the traditional training of elephants had tended to be unkind or even brutal, Elephant Bill revolutionized their care. He treated the animals with kindness and respect, and even started elephant training schools so they could gradually learn the skills they needed, instead of breaking their spirits to bring them into submission.Williams’ knowledge of elephants assumed dramatic importance during World War II when Burma was invaded by Japan. The Japanese would have captured the Burmese elephants to build roads and bridges for their advancing army. Williams, however, was able to employ his skills and experience to help the British Army and the Allies retain the valuable animals for their own military needs.The historic long trek of the elephants with fleeing British refugees, over incredibly difficult terrain into India, was breathtaking. Author Vicki Constantine Croke has done a remarkable job of finding original materials about J.H. Williams and his family, and especially about his work in WWII.I highly recommend “Elephant Company,” which I read in a Kindle version.

Billy Williams returned from the Great War and desired nothing more than adventure in the company of elephants. Traveling to Burma and signing on with a British teak lumber concern, he got his chance.This is such a charming story! I'm usually not a reader of "charming stories" and the military history aspect of the book initially triggered the purchase. Actually, there's very little military history and absolutely no combat in the book. Having said that, I am glad I bought it and it really is an excellent read.James Howard "Billy" Williams entered Burma at what would be the end of the colonial era in which Great Britain ruled large patches of the globe. In Burma, Williams becomes an employee of the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation and is immediately in contact with elephants and the experience affects him greatly. For a man who loves animals, working with these intelligent giants is a fascination and a joy. Williams becomes a "wallah" - an elephant expert who can treat elephant injuries, direct their work and comes to understand their thinking together with his Burmese workers. It's a window into a long-gone world and how British lived in the colonies.The book chronicles his adventures with the elephants, his Burmese workers, falling in love and marrying, being involved in the Allied war effort in the CBI (China-Burma-India) theater. Although his elephants did good work building bridges and leading refugees to India, barely escaping the clutches of the brutal Japanese, "Elephant Bill's" elephants were not vital or even important. But, it adds to the story itself.This is a tale of the jungle, of a man's joy in the wilds and among animals who always had the best interests of his elephants at heart. He established "academies" for young elephants rather than allow the calves of working, female elephants die. He established hospitals for injured elephants and showed the company that they didn't need to use cruel methods of capturing wild elephants.As I said, this isn't my usual read. Having said that, I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it with five stars.

This is a GREAT story! Who would have thought that I would like a book about football players? Heather Horrocks has done it again with this story! I enjoyed everything about this book!

Mind-body therapist Amy is certain she can help Daniel Reid recover from his fifth concussion and his pre-ALS symptoms--but Daniel's brother Knox is equally certain Amy is just one more scammer after his brother's money. He is determined to protect his brother (and his brother's marriage), but that's not the only reason he can't stay away from the beautiful, feisty Texas gal.I'm not a sports fan, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked the spunky heroine and her sense of humor, as well as the loyal, sweet, sometimes clueless brother. It's a nice, light read without sex scenes, bad language or violence, which I always appreciate.

This look inside the world of some someone suffering from concussions and possible ALS really opened my eyes! Knox and Amy are adorable too. While the romance moved quickly, I liked that the characters were flawed but could still love and forgive. What touched me the most was the author's note at the beginning explaining that her son-in-law suffered the same condition as Daniel, Knox's brother. The company that makes such a difference in Daniel's life is based off a real company that made a huge difference in the life on Heather Horrocks' son-in-law. I love learning about new things while still enjoying a fiction story.

I'm not a football fan but Heather made it fun. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next between Knox and Amy. A very good read for a snowy afternoon. I loved it.

Knox Reid, aka Fort Knox, is the ultimate protector both on the football field and with his family. When his brother gets pre-ALS symptoms following a series of concussions Knox feels a need to protect him from what Knox thinks is a scam instead of a legitimate therapy. He doesn't plan on falling for the beautiful therapist. It's a cute story and I enjoyed it!

A fun, clean, quick read full of heart. Enjoyable characters, enough real life to be believable but enough happily ever after to keep me happy. Great read!

I love this story of love. How Knox & Amy came to be. With determination and a zest for life. It's a love story worth falling in love with.

As a teacher I could certainly see this book also being used as a resource for older students who are reading below grade level as it has an interest level appropriate to them as well.The physical book is designed with the look and feel of an aging family picture album. There are seven chapters that focus on individual children who were part of the 10,000 children rescued from Nazi controlled areas and relocated to the United Kingdom prior to the beginning of World War II. Their story is told in the third person but from the child’s perspective.The first chapter begins with a poem “The Leather Suitcase” written by Tom Berman who was saved as a 5 year old child by a Kindertransport. Some background is given as it describes what it must have been like for such a young boy to be separated from his parents for a long trip to an unfamiliar country with a different language, not knowing if he would ever see them again. This chapter captures the reader’s interest immediately.The next chapter, “From Kristallnacht to Kindertransport,” gives more historical details about the increasing persecution of the Jews and their limited options for survival. Then the book returns to the stories of individual children, ending with a chapter that briefly recounts what happened to each child after the Kindertransport. It might be specifics of their time living with another family, further emigration, or an ultimate career, depending on their circumstances and the source documents available. There is also general statistical information about the 10,000 children of the Kindertransport.There are study resources at the end of the book. The “Timeline” integrates important historical dates of the war with major events related to the Kindertransport and the seven children whose rescues are detailed in the book. The “Glossary,” of course, defines unfamiliar terms such as “haftarah” and “pogrom” which are used in the book. This is my honest opinion of the book.With personal narratives and recollections dotting the pages, Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport is the story of some of the ten thousand Jewish children. Rescued from Nazi occupied Germany and other surrounding areas, the children were brought to the United Kingdom from 1938 until 1940. The children, babies on up to the age of 17, were placed on all modes of transportation without supervision or guidance. Their transport had to be paid by private citizens or aid organizations, as the British government needed to stay neutral on the subject. Great Britain was allowed by Germany to accept the children, as they were not wanted by their homeland. Britain would not grant them citizenship, but the temporary visas would keep them in the country until the war was over.The first kindertransport arrived in Harwich, England on December 2, 1938. The last transport from Germany was in September 1939 and the last from the Netherlands was in May of 1940. Through the stories of Tom Berman, Kurt Fuchel, Harry Ebert, Irene Schmeid, Hans Schneider, Ursula Rosenfeld, and Jack Hellman, readers are able to appreciate both the scale of the operation and its effectiveness.Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport was written with younger readers in mind, as the stories definitely show a more uplifting side instead of just the horrors. I would recommend this to younger readers or for adults to use to get acquainted with the subject matter.

Escaping the Nazis on the Kindertransport is a good book. It is historical non-fiction about the Kindertransport, a train that saved a lot of people during the years leading up to World War 2. It is short but well written and has many pictures. The book tells the stories of many people who survived on the Kindertransport and then tells about what happened to them after the war. One of them wrote a poem about the Kindertransport. There are also some quotes from the survivors. This is a very informative and interesting book, telling the stories of 7 of the more than 10,000 children who were sent out of Germany to refuge in Britain on the eve of World War II. Their brave parents put them on trains, not knowing if they would ever see them again, and in many cases they didn't. The children grew up to be successful citizens, however, and were grateful for their rescue. I received a free ecopy of this book from NetGalley and chose to write an honest review.

Once you understand how they are presented you can easily read the text. My only experience with this type of book, the events were presented in more of a written novel format. However, am enjoying the variety of events presented. I am a believer in these type of happenings, making it easier to read about them.

The format takes a bit of getting used to because it's in short snippets of individual memories rather than full chapters. In some ways, this approach lends credibility to the stories as there is little to no embellishment of them.It's not trying to impress anyone; it's just an unpretentious collection of anecdotes. In that, it has a certain charm.

I enjoyed reading this book. As a believer, the incidents recounted were seemingly truthful when compared to other stories/recounts I have read elsewhere. I only wished for a little more detail.Moreover, it was hard to know if the recount was someone else's or the author's.

I have not had a chance to sit down and read this book yet but I plan to read it soon.

If you have one of the new Kindle PaperWhite models, even though with your light-up screen you could--I highly discourage reading this one in the dark.As all-hallow's eve draws near you need to get in the spooky spirit. And what better way than getting a little bit more in touch with spirits that are described in this book! Who needs costumes and candy when you have this book full of chilling true accounts--this is the real deal!

Fascinating tales of ghosts that seem to be among us on a daily basis!Interesting how so many of these stories are from people's childhood. I especially love how each person reacts so differently to their encounter with their ghost. If you like the paranormal, ghost hunting and scary stories, check out this book.

I am so glad I found this book. It is an absolutely amazing collection of first-hand accounts of the paranormal that will have you on the edge of your seat.I still have goosebumps!

I enjoy reading the recipes in this book. Although it is an older book and doesn't really have the type of recipes I was looking for, it is a fun read and the recipes are easily and readily changed to fit your own liking. I take it camping with us just to enjoy reading it.

Cooking in a dutch oven over an open fire is a little different than using a skillet on a cook stovetop and there's lots of cookbooks explaining such filled with recipes.What makes this one so enjoyable is that it's half recipes proven over and over in real trail camps of the early National Forest Service, and the other half is wonderful stories about the folks who used them. I found myself glancing at the recipes in a hurry to get to the next story of couples living alone in tall timber and vast open ranges 100 years ago. Those folks were l8ke settlers, filled with starch, self reliant, and cut from strong cloth.

What a beautiful book. Not only are the hearty recipes wonderful but the pictures of rangers, campers, and other workers and visitors to national forests are inspiring. When people speak of simpler times I think many have these pictures in mind. Pictures seem to date from 1900s through 1960s (with some more recent pictures) I think. I don't know why but the picture titled "Tourists camping at Grayback Public Campground on the Siskiyou National Forest, Oregon" is striking. It's easy to replace the old vehicle with a Jeep and the canvas tent with a modern dome. But the people transcend time.

The Tips, Facts, and Pictures were very interesting and really added a lot to this book in giving you some background into the early Forest Service and some of their meals. After reading some of the Facts and seeing some of the 1930"s Pictures ...... this alone was worth the price of the book to me. That makes the recipes a very big bonus with a lot of meals I can't wait to try out. A few of the recipes are for a large group, but cutting them down to fit your needs shouldn't be hard. I like the cooking information included with each recipe down to how many coals to use up and down when using your dutch oven. I am well pleased with this purchase and already have a couple of recipes marked to try in the dutch oven real soon.

This is a compilation of recipes as well as a historical book. The pictures in it are incredible and illustrate the "old" days of the Forest Service.I made the Bean Hole Beans several years ago and they were outstanding. Used a #10 Lodge Dutch Oven and was surprised to see how quickly they cooked. One really has to keep an eye on the water in the pot! After one hour, I had to add water and then once again after 30 minutes.... It didn't take 6 hours to cook my beans.The other one I made was the pork roast (but omitted the black-eyed peas). I browned the roast in olive oil and added one can of chicken broth to the pot. Also, added some stuffing mix at the end.Highly recommended as the recipes are good and the historical portion is excellent.

This book has a lot of recipes all using your cast iron cookware over an open fire. But cast iron is not the only method, lots of aluminum foil pouch meals. Cast iron is my own personal favorite way of outdoor grilling. The book opens with a nice into on the Forestry Service, and goes into detail on cooking with cast iron for folks not familiar with the how-to. Well worth a review.There are recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between and on either side.I really liked the photos and the historical anecdotes included through the book.These recipes are just as relevant today and certainly give a lot of ideas. A fun read, it reminds me a lot of camping with my parents in my younger days.

I am going to rate this book two ways:First as a historical document of how things were it is well worth the price. Great notes, asides and historical bits. As a historical book I would give it 5 stars for those interested in the history of the parks and of the west.As a cook book it does a great job of covering the topic with a bunch of good to very good recipes and useful tips.(For instance butter will keep if stored in a strong salt water and to bake cookies or rolls put a pie pan that just fits into the oven on top of 3 or 4 nickles or quarters--keeps the bottoms from burning.) Those are worth the price alone.Don't be discouraged by the breakfasts; there are a couple of good ones like the chili con queso omelette and the one-eyed buffaloes that are pretty interesting. While there are a lot of stews and chillies in the entries there are some interesting variants and some recipes that are rather more varied and sophisticated. Most of the recipes are things that can be done with limited prep and resources but still sound interesting. The deserts in particular. This is not a dutch oven book per se but a camp cook book. Even includes a couple foil recipes. This book was largely written when "Cholesterol, saturated fat? Whats that? Fat's fat and that's that!".If you decide to experiment with the recipes or substitute oil for butter or lard then try at home. Particularly if you have never baked in a dutch oven! If you mess up at home you can order Chinese or Pizza rather than go hungry.The reason that I am only giving the book 4 stars (excellent) is that it has a lot of repetition in the recipes.Still a great buy and an excellent read.

I loved the bits of letters and recollections from Forest Service employees and wives, living and no longer living, as much as the recipes. An excellent book. I hope the friends of the FS will construct a similar book someday for the second hundred years -- or even the 50 years that follow this book; recipes used in the out-of-doors. I have been trying the recipes at home to see which tickle my taste buds. Those I will cook while tent camping (for weeks each summer).
