"As a pediatrician, the healthy growth of children is the central concern of my practice. Â By definition, "healthy" means more than positive ear, nose, and throat examinations-- it also implies emotional, physical, moral, and cognitive fitness. Â It includes giving a baby the best environment to grow, flourish and reach his or her full potential at each stage of development."Dr. Robert Bucknam, M.D., Founder & Director-Cornerstone Pediatrics-Louisville, CO

From the Author
26 year Pediatrician and father of four - Dr. Robert Bucknam, M.D. says:"Change! It seems to be a way of life for parents.  In our rapidly expanding, knowledge based society where technology changes everyday, new innovations impact life styles and the way people learn. Parenting curriculums, once designed to cover large blocks of developmental time are less effective today than years gone by. Precision teaching with concise thoughts for specific age ranges seems to be the way of educational life. Our newest curriculum reflects these changes. The communication and dissemination of early childhood principles are easily and naturally divided into four developmental stages, starting at birth and going to thirty-six months. Each stage represents new growth transitions requiring parents to accommodate the changes taking place as their child's grows. Our early childhood curriculum now include:Stage One:  Birth to 5 months-- On Becoming BabywiseStage Two: 5 to 12 months -- On Becoming Babywise 11Stage Three:  12 - 18 months -- On Becoming PretoddlerwiseStage Four:  18 - 36 months -- On Becoming ToddlerwiseStage Five:  36 - 84 months -- On Becoming ChildwiseWe continue this series where Babywise 11 left off. During the next 180 days, the newly emerging walking, talking, exploring, child begins a developmental metamorphosis from babyhood to toddlerhood."

A short read that is invaluable as I consider how to help my 19 m/o daughter flourish and grow into herself, giving her boundaries that encourage her to be more herself.Cannot suggest this book more, especially to a world where "freedom" means "no boundaries." Children FLOURISH with boundaries, and this is true for my daughter. This book is a short read and is totally worth it.
I can't say enough positive things about this book. We read it when my son started walking (11m) he isn't talking at all yet and he refuses to sign to us. The book was very helpful because it provided some commands and direction for me. My son now listens when I ask him not to touch something. When I ask him to come to me he listens most of the time. It is really helpful. I would recommend this to anyone who needs some direction or spots a behavior they think might not be something they want their child doing.
Love this book! This series has really helped me become a more competent parent! I look around at how other similar age children behave and I'm surprised how my child is normally WAY better behaved than all of them. (Unfortunately, the more she hangs out with other kids, the worse she has become at sharing but I guess that's something we just need to focus on more.)My siblings are jealous of how well she behaves but I don't want to seem to be judging their parenting when I see them do something the book warns not to do, so I don't tell them about Baby Wise and Toddler Wise. It would probably help them though, but some kids do seem to naturally behave better than others (and I'm only on my first kid), so I guess we'll see if it holds up to this next one 😊
The "Babywise" series has truly helped me understand what to expect and how to deal with different issues that come up with raising a baby. I love the authors' philophies that a happy and healthy child comes from a strong and loving marriage. They also believe that we, as parents, are training our children to be positive members of society with self-control and ethics. Their parenting style isn't for everybody, but it has worked nicely for us so far, and so I expected the guidelines to follow suit in this book. "Toddlerwise" didn't disappoint, but the one thing it lacked was a section explaining how to achieve certain behaviors. For example, they believe in training your child to play independently, which I think is a very important skill. However, when they say to train your child to play in one place by themselves by laying out a blanket and having them play in that space for a certain number of minutes, I was left with the question, "What if they crawl/walk away?!" I guess you just try, try again, but I honestly was left asking the questions, "How" or "What if..." more so than I was with the first two books. Still, if you are a "Babywise" parent, you will get something out of "Toddlerwise."
I cannot recommend them highly enough. I suggest getting the first two babywise books for the foundational info, then skipping to whichever books are the right age for your kids. We went from problems and counseling to progress and compliments.
This really encouraged me to establish parenting goals and focus on the why instead of the how. It gave me some great ideas on adjusting both my actions and my mindset when approaching my nearly 3 year old who is the exact opposite of her big sister!
OK book. I wish there were more insights on tantrums and coaching toddlers.
I'm a die-hard Baby-Wise mom, so I naturally went to Toddler-wise too. It is a great, practical lesson on raising grateful and well-adjusted children. I refer back to it all the time, which is easy because it's short and well organized.
