About the Author
Robert McCloskey (1914-2003) wrote and illustrated some of the most honored and enduring children's books ever published. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio, and spent time in Boston, New York, and ultimately Maine, where he and his wife raised their two daughters. The first ever two-time Caldecott Medal winner, for Make Way for Ducklings and Time of Wonder, McCloskey was also awarded Caldecott Honors for Blueberries for Sal, One Morning in Maine, and Journey Cake, Ho! by Ruth Sawyer. He was declared a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2000. You can see some of his best-loved characters immortalized as statues in Boston's Public Garden and Lentil Park in Hamilton, Ohio.

This book is hard cover and really great quality. If you like McCloskey, this book is for you. It includes the stories most familiar, as well as a few I'd never heard of before. Good price, as well. It would cost way more than this to purchase each book individually. There's a fun short bio of McCloskey and family.
To anyone interested in the great 20th century cartoonists, this book showcases some of the best known work of one of America's premier cartoonists. Though technically a children's book author and illustrator, his style is like that of some of the best cartoonists, IMHO, in other words, cartoonists who can really draw. And the stories are cute and charming, even if written in pre-PC 1940's America. Good for kids!
Everybody loves Robert McCloskey and the Ducklilngs -- and all his other books. We got this for some people we are trying to encourage to read to their child... and we think it was a good start. The individual books are better overall -- bigger pictures -- but this does seem to have all the text. And it is fun to have all the books in one place.
The pictures are relatively small, but the text is fine. For Make Way for Ducklings, the pictures are less than a quarter of the original. Some pictures are so small that you can't even see the ducklings! and at least one such picture was omitted. I still like the book, but it is definitely not the same as having the individual versions.
As children, Robert McCloskey books were among our favorites. The honest but gentle sketches of daily living added a warmth and homeyness to simple but real stories of loving relationships between parents and children; of picking and canning blueberries, and clam digging; of the fear of a little girl losing her first tooth and the embarrassing moments of a boy who'd rather play a harmonica than open his mouth so all could hear his voice change. Robert McCloskey wrote and drew life as he knew it; and made us all -- as children and adults -- feel like we'd entered into his life for awhile as welcomed guests. These treasure-troves are well-worth the money, and should be on the bookshelf of every child, parent and grandparent!
We love Robert McCloskey's stories and this is the perfect compilation of stories my husband remembered reading as a kid. My only concern is which of my three children to pass it down to when they start having kids!

Great book for young boys. Piques the imagination. Very nice change from licensed literature. Emphasis on people and plot rather than over-the-top superheroes. Warm-hearted humor.
