Showtime at the Apollo: The Epic Tale of HarlemÂ’s Legendary Theater

Review

"This graphic treatment adds a new dimension to a music book that was already hailed as a classic. Most graphic adaptations aim to reach new generations of readers with a work that is flashier but less substantial than the original. This collaboration between Fox (In the Groove: The People Behind the Music, 1986, etc.) and illustrator Smith represents a new experience for readers, one with an immediacy and vitality that text alone might never approach."  (Kirkus Reviews - STARRED review)“The graphic novel “Showtime at the Apollo: The Epic Tale of Harlem’s Legendary Theater” is like a sprawling Hollywood biopic… The book also shines a light on Harlem and black culture in America.” (The New York Times)"It’s a fizzy, entertaining, jubilant window into a space where so many artists became icons, overcoming hate and ignorance. It’s an essential guide to one of New York City’s greatest cultural institutions." (Entertainment Weekly)“Anyone interested in African American music and history and pop culture history will find this a captivating read.”             —Library Journal   (Library Journal)“This is a vibrant, exultant, and soulful history.” (Publishers Weekly)“This lively graphic novel traces the theater’s place in rhythm and blues, jazz and hip-hop history and its significance to New York City.” (Variety)"Showtime not only adapts Fox’s book, originally published in 1983, it expands upon it, bringing the story of the venue up to date, including events as recent as 2018 as it tells the complete story of one of the most iconic venues in the country." (The Hollywood Reporter)"...even those who are deeply familiar with the Apollo will find some delightful surprises in this evocative fusion of text and images."  (The New York Jazz Record)"...this graphic version is a beautiful, heartfelt, and rich tribute to a musical form, a vital location, and a pure American vision of connecting with the audience in the theater and everywhere else. We can feel the Apollo's heartbeat on every page, and that sensation will make a true believer of even the most jaded reader." (PopMatters)“Music lovers and history buffs alike will delight in this updated classic, and Smith’s stunning visuals will bring this important and exciting work to a whole new generation of readers.” (Bookish)

Certainly a story that deserves to be told. Never got through more than the first 20-30 pages. The illustrations style is very repetitive -- black and purple drawings, page after page. Hard to keep interested. Plus there are many celebs included. The artist drew some of them well but some of them hard to believe that this was indeed the person intended.

Was looking forward to getting the history of the Apollo.I expected the storyline to be clearer but it rambles. Graphic are okay not the best.

This is the best book i have read read about the Apollo. Learning the history and going through the decades was so immersive.

If you love American pop music, especially r&b, or you love New York or you enjoy history, this book is for you. It's a lot of fun.

Showtime at the Apollo: The Epic Tale of Harlem’s Legendary Theater is clearly an adaptation of a prose work, with text boxes explaining key moments in the location’s history, but the illustrations add more hooks to show the reader just how important this Harlem entertainment venue has been. (It marks its 85th anniversary in 2019!) So many big names played there when they visited New York City, and amateurs could launch a career if they went over well. It’s marvelous to see so many artists portrayed and quotes included, making this almost an oral history. Smith does a great job with the likenesses. They’re not photo-realistic but still recognizable while still demonstrating artistic style. I found Fox’s inclusion as a character a helpful guidepost to how the book came to be as well. It’s astounding how many people wanted to talk to him about this subject, passing him around to share their stories. Superstars like Elvis and the Beatles even make cameo appearances, wanting to see performers there. Playing the Apollo put a stamp of legitimacy on up-and-coming acts.Beyond being a significant performance venue, it was a community anchor for a group that didn’t find as much acceptance elsewhere. When not playing, people shared gossip, gambled, and gave each other tips. Chapters cover* the development of Harlem as an entertainment destination in the early years of the 1900s* the Schiffmans, the Jewish family that owned the theater, their hardball tactics, and the varied ways they were perceived by the community* some of the most famous bands, comedians, and dancers to play the Apollo* the legend of Amateur Night and its demanding audience* the invention of bebop and later, rhythm and blues* changes in the business with the advent of records and rock’n’roll* gospel revues and their effect on more commercial soul music* the tough times when the theater went dark in the late 70s and later ownership changes, leading to an eventual renovationAn afterword by Fox explains how the original book came together. At a relatively brisk 240 pages, obviously there are a lot of subjects merely touched on, but the whole package is a wonderful journey through pop culture history, particularly good for the reader not yet familiar with the details. (Digital review copy provided by publisher. Review originally published at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

For decades, performers have known they have made it big when they hear, It’s Showtime at the Apollo!More than just about the Apollo Theater in Harlem, this fact-filled graphic novel tells the story of African-American music in NYC from the Harlem Renaissance after WWI through the present. All the greats from all the eras have played the Apollo—Lena Horne, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Gladys Knight, Nicholas Brothers, James Brown, the Jackson 5, Sammy David Jr., Funkadelic and L.L. Cool J.There are some interesting little known facts. Who knew that February in the 1960s was reserved for the drag show, the Jewel Box Revue? Or about the bomb threat that forced the Revue’s closure? I also learned where the famed Tree of Hope stump came from and why it is lucky. Most graphic novels do not have so much text. Showtime at the Apollo reads more like an illustrated history than a true graphic novel. Even when the pictures alone could tell the tale, there is a text box labeling what is depicted. The artwork is clear. It is easy to recognize the famous faces. For anyone who is interested in musical history or the story of African-American entertainment in New York City, this is a fantastic choice. 4 stars! Thanks to the publisher, Abrams ComicArts, and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Showtime at the Apollo: The Epic Tale of Harlem's Legendary Theater by Ted Fox is a graphic novel adaptation of the author's 1983 history of the historic Harlem theater with a few new updates. The African-American theater has a legendary musical history with the best of the best performers gracing its stage. Fox's graphic novel brings the rich musical history and cultural significance of the Apollo to life. Even though I read an unfinished copy of the ARC, I still enjoyed the history lesson the author presents. It's fantastic that he covers from the moment it was built to the present, but I definitely found myself most interested in its earlier days from the 1930s through the 1940s. Anyway, like I mentioned before, I read an unfinished ARC and quite a bit of the artwork is either not there or rough sketches (sometimes just circles where people were supposed to appear on the page). Even though it I believe I still got all of the text from the pages, I still felt a bit out of the loop since I was missing a significant portion of this history.

Nourishing Traditions is primarily a cookbook that includes introductory and contextual information about traditional diets. While Nourishing Diets includes many recipes that aren't in Nourishing Traditions, I wouldn't characterize it as a cookbook. The recipe section is about 40 pages long and includes recipes for grains, soups and stews, nutrient-dense snacks, organ meats, cooking with blood, seafood, vegetables, fermented condiments, and desserts I am excited to try. It comes after almost 200 pages of detailed information on ancestral diets.  We learn about the nourishing diets of the Australian Aborigines: The Most Paleo of Them All, Native Americans: Guts and Grease, The Far North: Seal Oil and Whale Blubber, The South Seas: Abundance and Beauty, Africa: The Land of Fermented Foods, Asia: Variety and Monotony,  Europe: The Foods We Like to Eat. In addition Sally writes about "True Blue Zones: How Long- Lived People Really Eat", and "What to Eat? Translating the Wisdom of Our Ancestors into a Healthy Modern Diet". Nourishing Diets does include highlights of Dr. Weston A. Price's research, yet it expands far beyond it with a wide variety of references and geographic areas. For those of us who have a keen interest in how people nourished themselves historically, I highly recommend this book as an incredibly well-researched companion to Nourishing Traditions.  Having said that, I want to clarify that having the book Nourishing Traditions is not necessary to read and understand Nourishing Diets. My point is for all of us who already have Nourishing Traditions, this new book is different enough that I think it is a very worthwhile read. I found it to be very well-written and quite fascinating! Even though I have read a fair amount on this subject, I learned a lot more! We will read the book as a community in our Nourished Book Club on Facebook now that it has been released!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learned so much about the ancestral cultures. I am a student of history, genealogy is my hobby and I'm a devotee to cooking. To put all of my favorite things in one easy to read book is delightful. I am on my second read of the book because I want to make sure I pick up all the details. This book will be extremely helpful for someone eating in the Ancestral Way. Fad diets come and go but the old ways endure among those willing to seek them out.

I love history and really enjoyed reading about the traditional foods and their preparation of cultures from around the world. This book is full of interesting information, but is very easy to read and understand (not technical). Sally also includes a lot of interesting footnotes throughout the book to further explain various parts. It's also clear the author has a sense of humor. There were a number of times I laughed out loud reading this. The book is mostly information about the cultures, divided into a separate chapter for each. At the end of the book, it summarizes how to apply this knowledge in our own lives and includes recipes. She also references a number of books throughout and has a very long bibliography of books I will probably be looking up in the future. One author I was happy to see a mention of in the chapter on the American Indians is Charles C. Mann. I have read his 1491 book (here on Amazon; a fantastic book) on what the Americas were really like before Columbus. It's very eye-opening, and I wish the information was known by the masses. I was very happy to see that Sally included his information rather than just going with the "mainstream" fake knowledge that the Indians were all tree-hugging hippies living in the midst of thousands of miles of virgin wilderness. This book is mostly information, not solely a cookbook. If you want more information about traditional diets, read Weston A. Price's book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration. And if you want more recipes, check out Sally's books about broth or Nourishing Traditions.

I found Sally Morell's NOURISHING DIETS fascinating. As CEO of the National Billiard Academy, diet is extremely important for athletes, so I read much about diets. This book takes all the guess work out of what we should be eating because Sally has done incredible research. It's also an easy read if you like history and learning about people's all over the world and then learning that there is a common denominator to all the diets - fat. Thank you Sally for another great book.

It was well written and ultra fascinating. The thing that stands out to me and resonates is the variety of foods all these different cultures ate. Yet, I consistently read from mainstream media how we once used to eat mostly plant-based foods. All these wild and interesting foods they ate are nothing I've ever heard before, but whole-heartedly believe it. They had to eat from the land and ate what was available. Surely, lots of plants, but not primarily as mainstream media would have us believe. I love Sally's books. I own every single one and frequently refer to them. Thank you very much for educating me.

This well written book on traditional diets around the globe is an enjoyable, informative read. The book is thoroughly researched. Not some low fat hype about what various countries supposedly ate, but footnoted evidence as ti what they really ate.

I've been using Nourishing Traditions original book for many years. This was an interesting background book, although not quite the necessity that Nourishing Traditions is.

Want to eat well and get healthy? This is the book for you.
