Laural A. Bidwell grew up in Connecticut but left the rolling hills of the East years ago for the wide-open spaces of the American West. I have many Moon guides as an enthusiastic traveler and travel writer myself who writes for European audiences. The writer brings this to life with a great deal of first-hand research, the real magic is in her dedication to the owners of small town lodging and restaurant establishments, where she often incorporates their personalities and background into the narrative, making it all the ore compelling to stop and visit. The Hot Springs, Keystone, Hill City and Custer sections are especially well done and detailed and point out shops, galleries and family establishments that are otherwise almost always overlooked. Her writing is excellent and lively, extremely unpretentious and let's the reader decide for themselves with excellent facts and tidbits. The best Moon Guide I have ever come across, the author truly understands this beautiful place and has spent countless hours and hours researching and improving to try and provide us with a wonderful treasure map to the wonderful sites to offer in The area.

A chance comment by the grandson led us to start planning a week long trip with he and his sister to Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills and the Badlands. I got every tour guide for the area the library had and it took only a few hours to browse them and decide to order this one from Amazon. It was all we needed. Every major attraction and many, many side trips and diversions are described in down-to-Earth language, without hype or local boosterism. It might be argued that the book needs more photos, more this, more that - all of which would make it just another mediocre, all-in-one guide This felt to me like having an experienced, local tour guide. With the aid of this book, we had a great time and saw a lot of things, a few of which we might have missed were it not for this guide. Excellent investment.Jerry

I found this book easy to read, easy to find what I wanted to find, and really helpful on my recent trip to the Black Hills. Without it I likely wouldn't have discovered some of the things we really enjoyed doing. I like that it wasn't cluttered up with lots of restaurant and hotel listings.

I really enjoyed reading this guide. It gave me detailed information on the Black Hills and Badlands areas, including things I hadn't considered, such as the narrow roads and tunnels (we travel in an RV) and the temperature difference between the Badlands and the higher altitude Black Hills. It pointed out attractions I didn't know about (the two main dinosaur attractions really sound interesting) and helped me narrow down what I wanted to do and see in the four days I'll have in the area.

We used this on our recent vacation to South Dakota. It is accurate, concise without leaving anything out, and has lots of info on lesser known places. We used it every day, multiple times per day. As an avid hiker and backpacker, I loved the sections on outdoor activities. It was because of this book that I chose to backpack in Wind Cave National Park. It also has sections for families with children. We liked it so well that we're going to order the Arizona guide to use on our trip to the Grand Canyon next year.

We ordered this for our trip to the Badlands in South Dakota. This book was full of tips and information which we followed. By using this book we were able to get off the beaten path a bit and saw the most amazing things we would have missed otherwise. It's small and fits right in your suit case.

There were not a lot of options in travel books for this region. This book has plenty of information about each area with sample itineraries and good maps. I like that it divides the area in sections which I think makes it easier to plan what you'd like to see.

At first I didn't think I would like this book because there were not a lot of pictures in it. I like to see what is there like DK or National Geographic guidebooks usually do. I couldn't find any of my favorite guidebooks on Mount Rushmore so I took a chance on this one and was amazed. The information contained in this book is fabulous. I especially liked the recommendations made for scenic drives, accommodations, and restaurants. The detail of what to see and what to expect was excellent. Following up with searches on Trip Advisor to see personal experiences with hotels and places to see have made me more confident that I have researched the area well enough to have a pleasant trip this summer. I have also discovered that not all MOON Handbooks are created equal as each has a different author. This one, however, I found exceptional. About the Author

Born in Dublin in 1969, Emma Donoghue is an Irish emigrant twice over: she spent eight years in Cambridge doing a PhD in eighteenth-century literature before moving to London, Ontario, where she lives with her partner and their two children. The Wonder by Emma Donoghue is a masterfully written mystery, and the detective is a young English nurse who has been hired to come in as an outside observer to determine the validity of the claim of a rural Irish family that their eleven year old daughter has taken no food for four months, and yet, is miraculously thriving. This nurse, Lib, expresses well the prejudices of the English towards the Irish and their beliefs. (The novel takes place not long after the end of the Great Potato Famine, and so there are intense feelings between the two cultures.) The focus of the story is on a young girl, Anna, who is seen locally as being specially blessed by God, and yet, as the story unfolds we come to see that she represents a perfect storm of pressures arising from devotion to God and religious fanaticism, love of family and family dysfunction. Lib, as a well-trained nurse, arrives with total skepticism, assuming that the child herself is perpetuating this hoax, but Anna's simplicity and purity of heart gradually win Lib over. The challenge then becomes: How to keep this child alive? As with all good mysteries, just about every character has ulterior motives of one kind or another to want the phenomena to be real... the priest, the doctor, the innkeeper, the parents. It is only the trust that slowly builds between Lib and Anna that creates a ray of hope. So much happens towards the end of the book that I was transfixed. The book gave me much to ponder about how children are influenced, for good or ill, by those around them. After finishing it, I immediately went back to read the last three chapters again so I could better appreciate all that contributed to Anna's dire situation. I happen to be a child psychologist, so these issue matter to me, but I think Donoghue's novel will have wide appeal. This is a very worthwhile read.

This book is a delight to read on so many levels. The story is compelling and interesting and the writing is very good. In addition to containing a disturbing mystery, the novel poses questions about medical ethics and morality. A good book makes you think and I am still thinking about this one a few days after finishing.The story is set in southern Ireland in 1859, over the period of two weeks. Lib is a widow who became a nurse after her husband of one year died. She was a Nightingale, as in trained by Florence, and was working in a hospital in England after the Crimea War. Her matron suggested Lib travel to Ireland to be a nurse in the O’Donnell household for two weeks. She agrees, but nothing is as she anticipated. Lib has been hired by a committee of townsfolk to “observe” 11 year old Anna O’Donnell for two weeks. The child has not eaten in 4 months and the committee wants to know if this is a hoax or divine intervention as the family claims. The child reports that she receives manna from heaven. People come from all over to see the devoutly religious miracle child. Lib and a local nun are to take shifts and simply observe to see if the child is taking in any food. Lib is out of place in Catholic Ireland and is convinced that the whole thing is a trick. She is a firm believer in facts and science and has nothing but disdain for religion. As she spends time with Anna, an unlikely friendship develops. Lib remains very skeptical of the family and some of the townspeople. She is befriended by a newspaper reporter sent there to cover the story. Together, they begin to discover the horrible truth. As Anna’s health begins to fail, Lib begs the local physician and the committee to end the watch period and intervene. She soon discovers that everyone has their own agenda, including building up the local church if Anna is declared a saint. Lib knows that she needs to act fast, but she is torn between duty and love.There are so many lovely layers to this novel. The characters have hidden secrets, some of them quite horrifying. It is chilling to learn how far people will go to further their own desires. Far enough to endanger the life of a child and to convince her that she is doing the right thing by starving herself. There are themes of guilt, family loyalty, the goodness and dangers of religion, misperceptions and assumptions, and medical and moral ethics. The story is a slow burn that builds to some startling conclusions. The book is hard to put down and well worth your time.

Words can't to do this story justice. Personally, I do not enjoy nineteenth century writing. Nor do I find reading Irish, British or other forms of European English dialects; only because the vocabulary is difficult for me which causes me to stutter in my reading. However....this book had me hooked and I was able to overcome my shortcomings. The revelations were so intriguing and surprising! You have to read this beautiful written book!

Exceptionally written and illustrated. Wonderful historical account. One of the best books in this series. I highly recommend for both children and adults. A quick read, but full of fascinating facts and details. A great resource and teaching tool for Teachers, Schools and Parents. This book should be included in every Reading and Social Studies Curriculum. I continue to buy copies to share with my colleagues and friends.

This book is super. Really, it is. I am reading it with my 5 year old. While she reads about a paragraph every two to three pages, she is engaged in the narrative and asks lots of great questions.Her elementary analysis is phenomenal and much more thoughtful than I ever imagined.My little one is already looking forward to other books.

This whole series of books is just wonderful. Pick a topic that your child is or might be inteterested in and these books draw them right in. My son has been reading them since second grade (end of third now) and he still anxiously awaits them as I buy new. They are by far his favorite series and in my opinion so much better than the other silly/gross/obnoxious series out there.

My students liked reading this book. This book includes a few maps. There are actual pictures in the center of the book of Harriet Tubman and others. The black and white drawings in the book are clear. There are interesting chapters about slaves who escaped. My students wanted to keep reading.

I have read some of the most complex books on African American history, and our placement in this country. However these books just break it down quickly in a few pages. Just beautiful!

I discovered this series when looking for books for a 3rd grade teacher who teaches informational text in a urban elementary school. The students loved this series, especially the girls. Very well received by the teacher and students.

The answers are short and simple, which most of the time is a good thing, but for the really sticky situations/questions more information is warranted. I loved this book. A different and refreshing take on the zombie apocalypse. Love the characters and how Alex fleshes them out. I was drawn into it and even though it is horrible situation, I wanted to be right there with them trying to survive. I love that it is ordinary people having to survive an extraordinary situation. I won't give away anything because, I feel that you need to experience reading it. I have already read book 2 Burning Rubber and it is on par with this one. All of Alex's books are awesome and I am happy to have found a writer that combines all the elements that make a good book, great. She hasn't fallen into a formulaic way of writing that plagues other authors, so each book on its own or part of a series is organic and refreshing. Never know what is going to happen,because no formula is being utilized, just good writing and characters.

This tale is another zombie apocalypse but manages to have a few neat twists to it including one that probably has not been done before. The main characters of Dallas and Roper are well developed for this being the first book and their relationship develops quite nicely. The fact that the survivors are led by two intelligent and capable women also diverges from the norm in this genre. Well done! Also, the fact that a certain ten percent of the population is immune to the virus also marks it out from the typical form of such stories. The only thing that's missing is a fulfilment scene for Dallas and Roper as they always seem to be interrupted. Now have two books from this author and two series to follow through on.

I just finished reading Ride for Tomorrow ( Riders of the Apocalypse Book 1 ) , I didn't know what to expect or really what being a gay female lead character in a Zoombie Apocalypse would change a story line . OMG !!!!! It totally does , strong women , love for the people in their survivors group , who become the only family they now have . A lot of action and Zoombie 's . I can't say much more without giving away spoilers, other than I am excited to begin reading Book 2.

I am speechless I kept thinking this could really happen. I love a good zombie apocalypse storyline, but dam this one had me looking over my shoulder at every little sound. I am glad I have this series because I am going to read every one of them. I definitely recommend this book.
