This story is about the struggles Jenna, an overweight 12 year old girl, faces in school and at home and the changes she makes to overcome them. For such a painful subject, it is presented in an amazingly kind and gentle way. It's written as a series of emails sent back and forth between Jenna and her friends and family. The illustrations are simply wonderful. There is a supportive cast of people in her life that she confides in which helps show what safe relationships are. Her friends include kids around her age (a cool cousin and her best friend Chris) and a couple of concerned adults, her french teacher Mademoiselle Narby and the school counselor Mrs. Gonzalez. There are many great lessons subtly slipped into this book. Some of them are:1. What emotional eating is.2. What emotional triggers are and how to prevent them and cope when you can't.3. A list of tips that can be used to stop overeating.4. How to make an action plan used for goal setting.5. Introduces the concept of healthy food, serving sizes and even provides two simple, kid friendly recipes. This is great for anyone that struggles with emotional eating. No matter what your age!

This book has a unique email format, which makes for an intriguing read. Jenna struggles with her self-image and has realistic difficulties in school that I believe many children can relate to easily, even if they themselves are not overweight. It is a fun book to read, with helpful hints and recipes.Sometimes children need to know that it is o.k. to ask for help. In this book Jenna effectively asks for support from her friends as well as from adults in her school system to sort out her feelings. She pursues many avenues to help boost her self-esteem, while gaining control of her emotions, so she may find a path to healthier eating habits. It is an insightful portrayal of a young girl's emotional roller coaster ride through middle school. This book can open up a great dialogue for adults and children about communication, acceptance, bullying and healthy eating.

The best thing about this book is the format. The way it is presented in emails is very indicative of today's mode of communication. It takes a very serious and growing issue for young girls and Dr. Schechter makes this book very readable and easy for discussion.I highly recommend this book to ALL young girls so those girls who need help can be open to discussion and be proactive. Girls who have friends can be more sensitive to their friends and be more supportive and parents can really use this book as a springboard to talk or take measures to help their kids.My daughter who is in 5th grade really liked this book as well and we had a nice discussion about how important it is to have open communication with parents on everything. As a parent and educator, I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I am more of a fan of KO's political career, and only have half-hearted knowledge of The World Of Sports(Not to worry, I still enjoy a Dick Trickle joke!) I'm still glad my friend recommended this book. Keith and Dan's humor, passion, and the way they must have worked together really does translate on the page. I can see why Aaron Sorkin was inspired by them. I think there must be at least a chuckle on every page...

Disappointed, I thought there would be more inside stories about ESPN, and not about personal stories about the authors.

Well, maybe that's stretching it a bit, but I just stumbled across this tome by Messers. Patrick and Olbermann, and I have to say it is a great read for any sports and ESPN buff. Plus, the naked pics of Dan are to die for (just kidding). This book came out some seven years ago, when Olbermann was still allowed on the grounds at Bristol, but it resonates today because a lot of it holds true. Forget the somewhat dated references to the Macarena, and you'll enjoy it for what it is: two co-workers locked in deadly combat over whether the 1899 Cleveland Spiders deserve mention or not.Patrick and Olbermann were the anchor for the good times at Sports Center, and they write with absolute candor about their time in bottom-feeding jobs across the country before they fulfilled their destinies as the premier wiseasses for a generation. The "how-to" chapter on becoming a potential sportscastor is rather intimidating, but they offer helpful hints on how to get started (and to have a back-up plan in case it doesn't work out). But the real meat of the book is the estimation of atheletes over time. Olbermann and Patrick know their sports, and it shows in the lists they compile of "the greatest". Note to the fainthearted: Olbermann's arcane knowledge of nineteenth century baseball is mind-boggling, you may want to take a quick walk outside after poring over the lists.Patrick and Olbermann may no longer be a team, but their book is a great relic of that time when Sports Center truely was "The Big Show". Pick it up today, and you'll never put it down.

This book was a great and easy read. The only flaw is the lack of humor that the show it's about is so famous for. I especially enjoyed the chapter that focused on how to become a sports broadcaster. Before I read it I had no idea the work you had to put in to become what these two men have become. It definitely made me think twice about what I wanted to do with my life and how I was going to do it. Some of this book is funny, some parts are poignant, but most of it is just biographical. If you enjoy these two men, the show, or are interested in becoming a sports broadcaster read this book.

I bought this book when it first came out in the summer of 1997 (which is when Keith left ESPN) and it is a wonderful reminder of how things used to be. Keith is now stuck at MSNBC, where he recounts the day's "developments" in the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, and this book takes the reader back to a time when Keith seemed happier, always had a joke, and left the viewer with a smile. Sentiment aside, "The Big Show" is an intriguing look at how "Sportscenter" was put together, the blunders and disasters that seemed to threaten the show (and the hosts' collective sanity), and the world in sports in general. Keith and Dan also talk about serious issues in sports, such as racism and athlete salaries, in the midst of all the book's zaniness. I would definitely recommend this book, to sports fans in general, as well as die-hard fans of Keith. I hope that one day Keith will release another book, and that he is able to find some humor in his new job as a political commentator.

I just saw a Sport Center segment and I pulled this book out. This was the start of something special. All the sportcasters with irreverent comments and phrases...it began in earnest with these two. This was the golden era of Sport Center...Great insight and I love the phrases. It does read like the stories that those two used to do. The Big Show...Sunday Nights......And surprisingly, it ended with grace...remembering Tom Meese. If you are a fan in any way, shape or form of Sports Center, get this book!

I love sports and I love Keith Olbermann, so a book about sports and ESPN written by Keith Olbermann was a triple threat! It's an insider's look at the birth and childhood of ESPN with lots of rye wit from Keith. It's a great read when you just want to relax and have a few laughs.

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I first bought it back in the mid 90s, and I still pull it out at least once a year if not more to read it again and again. It has everything: It's extremely funny and very informative. I learn something new each time I read it. Olbermann is a baseball genius, his chapter on the 100 players not in the Hall of Fame is amazing. And the arguing between him and Patrick is hilarious. It helps if you are a sports fan, but even if you're not, you will enjoy this book. Great stories, great insight, great humor, great information. What else can you ask for?

Review

''Scintillating . . . There's an enormous amount of scholarship here, yet the story never drags, so adroitly does [Wasson] blend his material into a fluent narrative around evocative scenes where character emerges novelistically.'' --Publishers Weekly (starred review) ''Deep inside this comprehensive study, Sam Wasson uses a phrase to describe the movie Cabaret: 'the bejeweling of horror.' Bob Fosse's whole life was something like that, a man who created magnificent, bejeweled art at personal cost. It's an American story, powerfully told.'' --Paul Hendrickson, author of Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost ''I tore through this masterful biography, loving it from beginning to end. Wasson writes with a verve ideally tuned to his subject, sparkling with wit and fresh insight. . . . This is a life lived large and dangerously amid cultural currents that propelled and inspired Fosse as a dancer, choreographer, and director. In Fosse, Sam Wasson energetically and authoritatively brings it all into sharp focus, with uncanny depth and perception.'' --Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen''Hard work is evident in the intricate depiction of a complicated, brilliant man...A thoroughly researched and fascinating look at Fosse, viewed through the relationships and work that defined him. Highly recommended for theater or movie aficionados, aspiring performers, and fans of engrossing biography.'' --Library Journal (starred review)''Here's something you can't say about many celebrity biographies: at nearly 750 pages, it feels like it ends too soon. Wasson is such a lively, engaging writer that, as he takes us through the life and career of the multi-award-winning choreographer and director Bob Fosse, we scarcely notice we're turning the pages -- until there are no more to turn . . . Combining keen analysis of Fosse's stage and screen works with a compassionate look at Fosse's often-tumultuous personal life, the book is everything you could want in a celebrity bio, without any of the gossipy, trashy, third-hand rumory rubbish that makes too many biographies so painful to read. This one's a pure joy to read, cover to cover; you read it not merely for Fosse's story but also for Wasson's inventive way of telling it. If this book doesn't turn up on some literary-awards lists, it'll be a serious crime.'' --Booklist (starred review)''The lushly researched life of celebrated dancer, choreographer, and director (stage, films, TV) Bob Fosse. Film critic and biographer Wasson has amassed a mountain of data about Fosse but has sculpted it into something moving and memorable . . . . Graceful prose creates a richly detailed and poignant portrait.'' --Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

This is possibly the best book about American Musical Theater I have ever read. Sam Wasson manages to pull off a literary pas de deux writing exactly like Bob Fosse danced and choreographed. Reading this book is like watching a Fosse show. Wassen slides, glides and shuffles through this story of a tortured and talented man. From the curious detachment of his parents while he endured sexual abuse as a young man to the utter disregard for his various heath issues Fosse changed American musical Theater and danced it into the 20th century. Somehow he partnered with his demons to create brilliant theater. His relationship with Gwen Verdun is the stuff of theatrical legend. She was his lover, wife, muse and friend who understood him in spite of him.In addition to finding Fosse's life fascinating, I was awed by Sam Wasson's writing. His sentence crafting employs the same genius and quirky energy that Bob Fosse's dances did. Somehow he manages to tell the story, warts and all, without resorting to tawdry tales that usually inform these biographies. And Bob Fosse definitely had some tawdry! If you love and miss the Golden age of American Musical theater read this book .

A wonderfully researched and compelling biography of an incredibly complex showman. Bob Fosse revolutionized modern musical theater and was the perfect example of the bright light who burned too hot. This biography effectively goes into Fosse's head and fully reveals why he was such a perfectionist, control freak and self destructive madman. His friendship with Paddy Chayefsky was absolutely fascinating as was his relationships with all the NY showbiz Illuminati, some who were friends and many who were competitors. The author does an excellent job centering the story around Fosse's death with each chapter counting down the years toward his final embrace with Angelique, his angel of death.A bonus is great insight into the lives of the main women in his life (other than his mother) Gwen Verdon, Anne Reinking and of course, the intensely influential burlesque strippers of his showbiz youth.Great, highly readable biography. Highly recommended

This is the best biography I have ever read. The subject, Bob Fosse, is covered completely and objectively. The research is exhaustive and presented in quotes of persons giving information and not by annotation. Facts are substantiated in an appendix. The writing is so good I thought I was reading a novel. Even though the ending is known and permanent I kept hoping Fosse could be cured of his various multiple addictions. A must Book for Fosse, American musical, theater and show biz fans.

A Great read about a seminal figure in the popular cultue of the 20th Century --- a brilliant but completely neurotic ego-maniac with no impulse control. But what a brilliant dancer, choreographer, director, film-maker & bon-vivant whose personal demons were responsible for his early death. It helped me understand my own personal obsessions as a visual artist, and the book's melancholy tale of the theatre world stays with me even now.Alas, he considered himself a complete fraud and an artistic failure, even when he became a legend of Theatre, Dance & Film.

This seemed to be a "definitive" biography of Mr. Fosse. It was brilliantly written, providing insight and information that came from an exhaustive interview process with many of the key players in his life. I really felt like the author succeeded in painting an accurate portrayal of a difficult, neurotic, enraging, brilliant, unique man ... in a way that still made you feel protective toward him. A great feat. I don't usually review books, but felt compelled to do so if it results in even one more person reading this. Enjoy!

Detailed narrative on Fosse's incredible rise and eventual set-backs. An inside look at insecurities, bad habits, destructive behavior, love affairs, perfectionism and genius. Especially interesting - inside info. on musicals and films. Overall, an in-depth view of a complex workaholic who was never satisfied and couldn't enjoy his success. Author did his homework.

There have been other books about Fosse but this is one that really defines him and his life in the theater. It's about 800 pages long and pretty well profiles an era of musical comedies during two decades---at least those that were impacted by Bob Fosse. I lived through that period of the 60's and 70's: a period with shows by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Kander and Ebb and a host of other creative geniuses. Fosse came from a difficult childhood spent in vaudeville and burlesque, areas that impacted him enough to create an obsessive choreographer and then director who could only accept perfection in his dancers and actors. Mr. Wasson explores and linearly goes through the creative efforts of Fosse and his impact on producers, writers and composers. Equally vivid is his sexual demands made on quite a few cast members. His marriage to Gwen Verdon and his creation of choreography for her over the years made her into a star. A complicated genius with terrific drive and a short life.

An excellent book for fans of Fosse, yes, but also for a chance to look inside the life and mind of a man who had a huge influence on stage and film that is still viable today. Learning about Fosse's relationships with family, friends, wives, lovers and his dancers is enlightening every step of the way.I think Fosse was a genius and the book gives excellent and intimate insight into how he got there. If you get a chance, check out youtube for video clips of Fosse dancing in his earlier career and then watch clips from dance numbers he choreographed for movies and Broadway. Wow!An added bonus is a look at the history of vaudeville, Broadway and films and how they all evolved and are intertwined. The size of the book should not deter you at all. Every page is like Fosse, going from deep despair to over the top "razzle dazzle"! Show Biz at it's best and worst. Highly, highly recommend!

I acquired a used softcover copy from Goodwill via amazon. First, Ramon Llull is one of the most-studied of Mediterranean medieval mystics, and despite the passage of many centuries, he remains as controversial today as in his age. He was alternately accused of heresy by the Inquisition, and proposed for canonisation by the Roman Catholic Church. Second, by his own account, he had an illumination experience in which he was inspired with a philosophical Art or Work, which formed the foundation for a structure of logic to elucidate Christic theology, which he hoped to use to convert the "Sarracens", for which purpose he learned and wrote in Arabic, and travelled widely. From the perspective of this writer, other theological writers bog down in his significance within Christianity, as he apparently failed in his life work to convert any Muslims to Christianity ... what is most intriguing is that in his attempts to understand Moslems, especially the mystics among them, Llull ended up not unlike them. No where is this more apparent than in an extended love poem, in this edition in a fresh readable, accurate translation, of an extended Sufi poem actually placed in the mouth of a fictional hermit Blaquernas. who admits at least admiration for Sufi mystical poetics: it could be a re-writing of the Sawanih of Ahmad al-Ghazali or the Maqamat al-Qulub of an-Nuri. As such, Llull is a precursor to later Catholic mystics like Teresa of Avila and Juan de la Cruz who also drew from Islamic mystical literature for their work. This volume is an abridgement of a two-volume publication by the same author, and although I have not compared the two editions to see what was set aside, this book seems to contain everything an interested reader could hope for, and makes for a very satisfying account of Llull's life, teachings, and influences. I would recommend it just for the new translation of The Book Of The Lover And The Beloved. - Daniel O'Donnell, Portland Oregon USA

For all practical purposes, this book is the primary introduction to Ramon Llull available in English. Llull is a difficult figure to come to terms with, for various reasons, and I must admit that I left this book feeling a bit more confused than I was when I started. There are two components of this book: Llull's writings themselves (not by any means all of them, which would require much more space, and Professor Bonner has already released a two-volume anthology in addition to this book) and Professor Bonner's commentary. From the very start, it's difficult for us to even begin to conceive of Llull's place in his own world. Llull was born in Mallorca, which had only been reconquered from the Muslims a few years before his birth, thus raising the prospect that he experienced some cultural crosscurrents in his youth. He spent his earlier years as a courtier, and more specifically as a troubador, which also could raise suspicions about his background. After a conversion experience, Llull became a tertiary Franciscan, a designation defining a semi-monastic state not necessarily in permanent orders; presumably, he was considered too old to enter regular orders (he was past thirty). He spoke Arabic fluently, and a great deal of his work is in Arabic.Professor Bonner defines him primarily as having one major goal in his life: conversion of the Moors, and defines him as a "polemicist", in the terms of the day. On reading his works, one feels that the polemic is missing, and in fact he apparently has so much sympathy for Islam that it looks as if he may have been a crypto-Muslim himself. Llull himself cites Sufi influence in some of his work, and one of his major works - "The Book of the Lover and his Beloved" - bears a title that sounds like a direct translation from Arabic.Llull's major life's work was his "Ars" (which apparently means something in this context like style of presentation) and it is in this area that the book really falls down, in my opinion. Professor Bonner makes constant reference to Llull's "Ars" without ever going into any specific examples as to what it is. It is apparently some system of thought that is supposed to explain all other systems of thought, and it involves the use of diagrams. Based on what I have found in other works it is true that Llull's "Ars" is apparently quite abstruse, and I can only presume that Professor Bonner didn't feel he had enough space to do it justice in this one-volume presentation. However, I was left with a sense that it was either something akin to the Jewish Kabbala or else a thirteenth-century version of Abraham Maslow's diagrams. Neither of these images leaves me any further on.Llull was both praised and condemned by later generations as an alchemist, a charge which Professor Bonner dismisses by showing that the alchemical works attributed to him were forgeries. Llull has also been beatified by the Vatican, but he has never been canonized; one wonders whether this is was because of the whiff of alchemy in his background or whether his thought was too far out of the Christian mainstream, like Meister Eckhart.Llull is also considered the founder of Catalan literature, a fact which Professor Bonner devotes no space to, and it would be interesting to place him within this perspective. All in all, I found Professor Bonner's explanations told me too little, and they didn't really prepare me for what I encountered when reading Llull's texts. It would be interesting to see if there is any serious study of Llull's work by a competent Hispanic Arabist on the level of Luce Lopez-Baralt or Father Asin Palacios.I can't say that the book cleared things up for me. Having said that, I have no recommendation to the reader where he or she should go to find out more. Perhaps Professor Bonner's two-volume work provides more background, but to all appearances it is a specialist work and probably more than the casual reader would care to deal with. There are some websites in Spanish and Catalan that I've encountered that go into some detail regarding the "Ars", but I suspect some New Age revisionism in their content, which is certainly not a charge that can be levelled at Professor Bonner. In the end, I opt for three stars for the work. If you're interested in Llull this is as good a place to start as any, and better than most, no doubt.

Wonderful collection of five of Llull's most important work. Bonner's translations are concise and fluid, very helpful. His introductory remarks to each book fill in historical and biographical information, so you end up with a bio of Llull in addition to his actual writings. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to read Llull in English for the first time.

I bought the hardcover version of this book. and it cost 162 dollars.this book use the CHEAPTEST MATERIAL in all my text books (and i have multiple Masters degrees so i have a lot of books). I simply cannot accept book cost over 162 dollar use the same type of paper you find in a 2 dollar book. the paper are thin and yellowish, reminds me the book i use to use back in 80th.i also bought another book "data mining concept and techniques", cost 50 dollar and actually feel like a premium book.we all know books are extremely over priced by like a million percent (thus the "india edition" text books only cost like a quarter of the price). i just hope the publisher spend a few dollars on improving the paper and print quality of the book. do they really need to save 5 dollar on a 160 dollar of pure profit?

We used this book in a class which was my first academic introduction to data mining. The book's strengths are that it does a good job covering the field as it was around the 2008-2009 timeframe. Included are discussions of exploring data, classification, clustering, association analysis, cluster analysis, and anomaly detection. Additional bonus appendices cover some elements of linear algebra, dimensionality reduction, probability and statistics, regression analysis, and optimization, in case those concepts are fuzzy for the student. They're by no means thorough enough to learn the topic, merely to remind the reader of salient points they should remember.I liked the structure of the book, with each analysis topic being divided into a basic concepts and algorithms chapter, followed by an additional issues and algorithms chapter.I liked that when algorithms were presented, they were presented as pseudocode rather than in any particular language. What I did not like is that separating the concepts from their applications created a bit too much distance for those wanting to apply these concepts. In our class, we were using a tool called Weka, which provides reference implementations of various data mining algorithms in Java, and sometimes it was difficult to tell what we should learn from the results of our experiments. The book did not discuss this very deeply, and certainly not against the types of results that we were getting from our application.During the course, because I knew we would be relying on Weka, I purchased a copy of ISBN-10: 0123748569 http://www.amazon.com/Data-Mining-Practical-Techniques-Management/dp/0123748569/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b, which was written by the group that maintains Weka. I found their book to be helpful while I ran the Weka tool, and I was able to use it to develop command line use of the tool and solve some memory management problems. This book also covers much the same ground, although from a bit more practical perspective.Later, because I'm interested in data mining in a large database environment, I purchased ISBN-10: 0123814790 http://www.amazon.com/Data-Mining-Concepts-Techniques-Management/dp/0123814790/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_c, which is much more focused on the "how" of data mining, to include describing the use of data cubes and the necessities of processing it using data mining algorithms.I cannot complain about Tan's book, just that I wished it had slightly more thorough explanations of what one should learn as data mining is certainly an iterative process. If you're interested in Weka, I recommend the Witten book, and if you're new to data modeling as well, I recommend the Han book.

I really like this book due to how easy of a read it is. This book is meant for people from many different backgrounds (not just computer science) to learn about data mining. If you are looking for deep in depth details then you are most likely going to be a little disappointed. The examples are well thought out and the figures are all really informative. If your looking to learn about data mining then I would recommend this book to you.

I really appreciated the annotated bibliography at the end of each chapter. Potential readers should be aware that this is a survey text, but if you are looking for introductory material on data mining, with lots of great references on where to go for deeper reading in selected topics, this is a good place to start.

Although this book is considered as a standard introductory textbook for data mining classes, in my view it has limited scope. Key issues such as the logic (and perhaps some theory) behind classification and clustering techniques is not presented thoroughly, while there is an extended presentation of association analysis. This is in line with the research interests of the authors of course ( at least that is what I concluded by viewing the reference lists at the end of the chapters - the authors have published extensively in this field). The problem is that association rules are reported by other sources to be less useful than newest algorithms such as collaborative filtering. No coverage on regression exists in the book as well. So in overall I believe there are more useful books to introduce someone on this very interesting and fun field!

This textbook is extremely dry and focuses on many aspects of data mining that are not applicable to practical applications. Would instead recommend a better statistics book coupled with a machine learning text.

This book was recommended by my Machine Learning professor. and has a wealth of information on clustering, belief networks, decision trees and clustering.

Tan, Steinbach and Kumar did a good job. It is definitely a good read on Data Mining (DM). Pretty much all the fundamental DM algorithms are covered and explained in simplistic fashion. Most of the high level DM algorithms are basically off shoots of one or more of these fundamental DM algorithms, so it is imperative to have a clear understanding of them. This book is very helpful in that regard. It would have been nice if the book covered Support Vector Machine in more detail.Undergraduate level Statistics and Linear Algebra knowledge is needed to understand some concepts covered in the book.Good luck future miners.

The Mindful Brain: Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being

From Publishers Weekly

Siegel, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Center, blends personal experience with scientific research, attempting to capture the spiritual as well as the physiological phenomenon of "mindfulness"-or, in Siegel's acronym-speak, COAL: the state of simultaneous Curiosity, Openness, Acceptance and Love. Siegel's endeavor is timely and well-intentioned, but his is an elusive subject, and his text is peppered with confusing, semi-technical descriptions of mind-states (like meditation) and processes (like egocentric and allocentric circuitry) that frequently frustrate. Despite this, Siegel does introduce persuasive scientific evidence that meditation and the mindful state not only produce improvement in well-being, but also detectable physical changes in the brain, such as a thickening of the middle prefrontal lobes. He also introduces exotic new vocabulary, such as "ipseity," "the core sense of self beneath the usual personal identity." If the result of Siegel's marriage of medicine and mysticism is something of a muddle, he is to be commended for the effort, and his attitude toward science is unique in a medical doctor (tellingly, Siegal took a sabbatical from med school after being reprimanded for empathizing with his patients, rather than objectifying them, and used the time to pursue drawing and dancing). Though uneven and weighed down with too many acronyms, this is a notable science title that smartly combines the personal, the clinical and the spiritual. #40,617 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This is an excellent book in need of some editing. I have the sense it is one of Siegel's earlier books, as his later MINDSIGHT seems more polished. The pros:The book offers an incredible amount of information and understanding about the relationships between the functions and attributes of consciousness and the structures of the brain. It is really a "brain-mind" primer. The author is clearly of the opinion that mind is not merely an epiphenomenon of the brain, but an equal creator of it. If the brain is hardware, then the mind is the experiential aspect of using a computer--one step up from software, in fact. The number of areas the text touches upon is staggering: from child development to parenting, education, meditation, psychotherapy, you name it. Siegel is one of the leaders in this field, and the book offers an extensive bibliography of books and articles consulted in the writing. If someone has the time, a second reading is definitely warranted as the information can be overwhelming.Cons:This is part of the problem with the text and why I'm not giving it five stars. It is at times repetitive, stating the same things over and over in different ways. This can make it feel poorly organized. Sometimes the discussion of brain structures is on the rather dry and technical side, and this can seem a little irrelevant at times, especially for non-specialists. This was another issue: I had the sense the author was unable to target a specific audience. Was he writing for neuroscientists or laypersons? Sometimes it seemed like the former, sometimes the latter. The text was as a result alternately overly technical and at other times just right (for me, at least). Often the figures and diagrams were not where they should have been and the writing seemed awkward--clear indications than an editor (or two) was asleep on the job.Overall, this is a very good book--not entirely introductory--and this author clearly has much to offer. I am starting in now on MINDSIGHT, which, as noted, appears a more polished, more focused work. The science here is exciting and this book is just scratching the surface, a start and going in the right direction, it seems to me.

I've always been a fan of this author, he is a scholar, excellent writer and based on his writing a wise individual. What makes this book especially good from my perspective is the balancing of subjective information from the world's wisdom traditions and his own interior experience with their physical correlates i.e. rigorous science without reducing either to the other. This is extremely refreshing and this carefully researched book adopts an attitude of openness, curiosity and wonder. In addition, THE MINDFUL BRAIN is NOT written soley for academically minded individuals or psychologists. It is very readable by any intelligent layperson and extremely engaging. It is theoritical, but also compellingly practical in the spirit of Parenting From the Inside Out, which I highly recommend as well.I also The Developing Mind: How Relationships and the Brain Interact to Shape Who We Are is an incredible book. However, this is much less accessible to the average person than this volume and the one in the proceeding paragraph.More concisely, what Daniel Siegel has done is brought together what we know from the various contemplative traditions, mind-body medicine and neuroscience together in a compelling argument for the value of mindfulness to everyday life, happiness and health. I would think this would be something everyone would be interested in.While it's a wonderful adaptation to be able to think ahead, plan, etc. This often carries one out of the HERE and NOW moment and keeps us on a treadmill of postponing our fulfillment. This book is about balancing our ability to look forward while remaining anchored in the present... the only place where love, happiness and peace could be found.I work in this area and have graduate education in biology, biochemistry and psychology. This is my life's passion and I own many books on this topic and present workshops. This is in many ways the book I wish I had written although humbly I must admit Daniel Siegel would be an extremely difficult person to top. Hopefully, however, someday I will be able to add value by complimenting his and other people's good work.

Excellent treatment of a very complicated subject.

Very dense read but excellent information. Will take me, a non-practitioner, to get through.

very good

Great book delivered on time.

This is a detailed thoughtful book about mindfulness. I work in the field of neurology so I appreciate the scientific theories of how our minds are impacted by mindfulness practice. It is beautifully read by the author who has a soothing, honest, relaxed way of speaking.

This is a really well written book that everyone can understand. It is worth the time to read it and a great book to read over again.Awareness is a gift and this shows us how important this gift is inour lives.
