The most user-friendly and accessible book about opera I've read so far. Fred Plotkin is impressive not only for his knowledge of opera but for his urbane, positive underlying philosophy: his tolerance, love for the arts and for life in general - the sort of person it would be good to know and to have as a friend. The book begins with some general comments (the most enjoyable is on page 146, the 'essential secret that opera lovers know and those on the outside never suspect'), and then goes on to explore eleven operas in more detail. The point of view is of a genial mentor, guiding newcomers to the opera world through some of the world's most loved operas, using methods that will allow them to grow in confidence and knowledge. I have only one suggestion - the book, published in 1994, needs an update. The advent of Youtube, live streaming and opera in HD has given beginners an economical way to learn about opera. It would be good to have Plotkin's thoughts on how this could be done, and whether he thinks the new technology will threaten or enhance the development of opera in the future.

I love classical music - well most of it written before 1920 anyway. For some reason, I could never get interested in opera, so I thought I'd buy this book and learn how to appreciate opera. Unfortunately, the book is written by someone who knows, understands and loves opera - which makes sense but doesn't give the neophyte the perspective needed to understand WHY he/she should give opera "some room" in your life. I was not able to finish the book because what I read did not make me appreciate opera enough to go further in my reading. Probably my loss. Don't buy this book if you expect it to make a convert out of you.

This is a simple, well-written book, designed for anyone who has ever been interested in opera but never really been able to "get it". Plotkin explains everything you need to know -- the different voices, the history, the basics -- in a way that is entertaining and informative. After listening to opera (with a lot of frustration at what I knew I was missing) for many years, I really heard and enjoyed my first opera, thanks to Plotkin. After reading less than half the book, you will find yourself listening to recordings of great operas and loving them. I have already booked tickets to the next local performances. If you have ever wondered what all the fuss is about opera, read this book. You will be glad you did. It opens a beautiful world that, for me at least, had always been mysterious.

The book offers a clear pathway to, as the title suggests, learning and loving opera. The book is great for anyone just starting to go to operas or someone who enjoys operas and wants a readable description of what makes this art form great.

About the Author

Jessica Lark was always an artist in one medium or another, accepted to Moore College of Art and Design under a young artist’s scholarship at 16 years old. Her flair for artistry culminated into a project to honor her best friend that passed away at 19 with a body painting series, which she painted herself and photographed. While she had always had a love for the nostalgia and immortality that photographs provided, she had never found her way to it from the artistic perspective until she used it to archive the imagery she created on the female form… And the rest as they say, is herstory. She married young and began her photography career with no training or education in photography, business, or marketing. Her first sessions were done in her basement next to the oil tank on a backdrop made from a canvas drop cloth bought at home depot and hand painted by her and her sister. She shot on the little green square and charged $25 for the first session, $50 for the second, her first boudoir series, shot in her own bedroom as the set. In 2 and 1/2 years she took her operation from her basement and handmade backdrop sittings at $25 each to an $80,000 a year business, with high end weddings of more than $12000, and opened 2 boutique studio locations with a full staff, now offering her signature intimate portrait collections at $1500-3000. With no experience, training or education, a $2000 start up investment and a lot of determination she built her own little photography empire, while simultaneously juggling a toddler and newborn, no advertising budget, and in the middle of a failing economy.

I liked how the author immerses you in her vision of boudoir. Her wording is very poetic and nothing short of fun to read. Unfortunately, it did little to advance my understanding of posing for boudoir, learning to light a subject for boudoir or to sell boudoir photography to women who aren’t already pursuing a photographer for that purpose. She goes into posing very minimally; offering a small handful of poses that don’t work and then showing small adjustments to make them more successful. The problem is that even though she does make an honest effort to explain WHY some poses don’t work, she doesn’t offer any guidelines to creating your own poses. You’ll be able to use the handful of poses in her book but that’s about it. She also doesn’t really teach anything about setting up lighting. She lightly touched on it but, if you don’t already have a good grasp on lighting your subjects, this book will not help you. Buy this book if you want to hear someone passionately speak about an art form they love. It will also teach about providing an immersive environment for your clients. She does an incredible job for that. Do not buy this book to learn boudoir lighting, posing or selling boudoir as a business.

I really enjoyed this read. The author Has a crystal clear view of composition with regard to the human body. From preparation to posing, from language to lighting, the author brings much to light with regard to the reason she is successful in this art. With the utmost clarity, I fully understand that the art is about the client, not the photograph. Perseverance behind the camera with emphasis on client and atmosphere are paramount. In closing, I was extremely impressed with her recognition of friends and family that have helped her understand along the journey of her profession. Kudos to you all. I have just started studying this art in a dramatic switch from landscape. I hope someday to be able to publish my success to the inspiration of this author and book. Thank you.

This happened a few times and didn't detract from the story too much but is worth mentioning. I also really appreciated how the cute girl he meets online keeps their relationship platonic throughtout the book.Overall I would recommend this to anyone who likes the litRPG genre or who is interested in checking it out.

The characters are relatable and sympathetic, even if they occasionally make choices that make me look at them a little funny.Fight scenes are smooth and progress nicely, and the story has very little that feels like fluff or filler. I especially loved the humor of the scenes, and found the sarcasm very well executed.The other real strength that I found in this book was that, despite being a LitRPG, it balanced the genres well and didn't forego a story for game mechanics. I'm not the sort who really loves heavy, drawn-out sequences of stat boxes, and despite that, the story was able to be coherent and enjoyable for me.The cons:I felt that there were issues in tone with this book, with different sections feeling like they were written for wildly different audiences. I could never quite get my feet under me with that.The world was lovingly created, but at the same time, there wasn't enough support given to its dystopian nature. Characters would behave in ways that seemed very unusual/unreasonable/unrealistic, with the justification just sort of lumped together under the umbrella of "the world is hard", and it didn't feel convincing to me.Fight scenes flowed well, yes, and I found them pleasant enough to read, but they never made me feel like the main character was in danger. He cut his way through enemies with ease, which left the fight scenes feeling distant and disconnected to me.My greatest issue with Occultist was that key moments in the story felt rather contrived. Things would progress reasonably, and then when the plot needed to progress something implausible or impractical would happen, like the main character being afraid to do a google search for his invalid mother for fear of being tracked yet being totally comfortable using her credit card to buy stuff (only realizing his mistake later for dramatic effect). The central concept of the book was the greatest offender of this for me - I didn't find the scenario of the main character winding up stranded in a dungeon and finding a hidden class trainer to be believable/reasonable.Final thoughts:Despite what I've said, I truly did find Occultist an enjoyable read. It wasn't a struggle to get through, and I found myself laughing out loud in places. I think it has its points which can be improved upon, but it's really strong, especially in the LitRPG genre. I would happily read something else by this author, and I wish him the best of luck with this release.

The book as a whole was a very good read with a nice balance of in game action and real world action! There were a few mechanics that didn't seem to work correctly but over all a good read!

I recommend this book, it was a very enjoyable read, I liked the characters and had a good amount of action.

Couldn't put it down. Spent 6 hours reading it before I realized what time it was, and then wanted to re-read it. Can't wait for the next book! Perfect amount of LITRPG, no 15 pages of tables every chapter, no harem, just pure entertainment.

This 3-in1 volume monster of a book is very well presented, perhaps the best quality trade paperback for an omnibus manga you will currently buy. I own Naruto (soon to be Bleach and it's practically the same quality), Until Death Do Us Part, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Lone Wolf & Cub omnibus mangas... all of these titles pale in comparion to this VizBig Edition manga! When this book came in the mail it was a little heavy but upon opening the package I understood and immediately accepted the fact I will be purchasing all of these volumes. You will get your money's worth.Everyone else wrote accurate enough reviews on the story of Vagabond so I would recommend reading those. I wanted to share my experience on actually owning the book. Even if you own the previous volumes, I would find a way to own the omnibus edition for the additional features like more colored pages.

Maybe the past few volumes I bought lowered my standards, but this one almost looked brand new. Also, it had some breathtaking full-age color illustrations. Great improvement over the past few

I'm happy with the service but will warn or grammar and spelling typos that I've found in every volume.

We've been churning through the Vagabond series - the artwork is so beautiful; the whole Samurai/Ronin thing is so insane; the story of Sasaki Yojiro is hard to believe, but it's true...And at the end of this volume, he finally meets Musashi.Sometimes I have to take a break because the violence is so intense. But the art is so compelling I start reading again right away.It's breathtaking.

Warning! If you start "reading" the Vagabond collection, you will become addicted. Not to the simplistic telling of the great tale of Musashi Miamoto, but to the incredible artwork by Takehiko Inoue!This is just another wonderful piece of that great epic tale!

Everett is very "old school" but he was very much ahead of his "time" regarding understanding the art marble making. I hope someday to find a book about that.

Tacky stuff on front of book...had to clean before reading it. Not a comprehensive book...shows pictures but not descriptions and details. Very disappointing.

Great pictures, and lots of them, with information on go-alongs and on manufacturers, but not a great an ID guide as I had hoped it would be. I still can't tell who made my vintage marbles.

Great book but marble pics could be larger. I've learned quite a bit, however which was the idea.

Photos are fantastic and information is great for helping you identify your old marbles. I knew nothing about the marbles that I inherited. This book has made it fun to find and identify the ones that I have. Shipping was fast.

I'm looking at starting my first online based business which is something like a blog. I found this to be a motivational sort of outline of the blog process. I am a beginner, so I'm not qualified to say whether this is comprehensive or not in terms of the scope of blogging. I had hoped to find a book that explains more technical issues. The section on plug-ins for instance, suggests multiple plug-ins for success but it does not break down what the plug-ins do: in terms of their functions or what different qualities or levels of them might exist out there or why I might even want them. It just tells me to find them online and learn how they work. The trouble I have with some expert written books is that the author knows so much they forget what it's like to know nothing and so unintentionally skip over some important issues that prove to be stumbling blocks for novices As I read through the section on plug-ins though, most information felt like it was written in a foreign language. The thought of having to go online and discover what each of these plug-ins do is overwhelming and then return to the text is discouraging. I think what would help the next edition is to add a glossary of terms at the back of the book. That way I could answer my own questions quickly within the book itself and then I have to go outside of it don't lose the momentum I've gained an understanding and concentration.Overall I found this to be motivational and have complete confidence that the author knows what they are writing about. In this regard it's something like Boot Camp – you get thrown in and you got to swim. That's the attitude. Intentional or not.But if you're OK with that learning style you will probably love this – and if you're not OK with that learning style – you probably need to learn to be -in order to become a successful blogger. At least that's my take away and I am going for it. Of course the author invites you to subscribe to his blog, both to keep up with what's the newest and as he explains throughout the book – to grow his own email list which is valuable. Looks like a win-win to me.

You need to know this book is only 39 pages, 1.5 spaced, larger type. The contents read like a powerpoint presentation. Here is one example on how to make your blog post go viral: "If you want to create a blog post that will likely go viral, you want to make sure it has the following qualities: (the following written with bullet points) "Relevant: Your topic should be relevant; Helpful: Your topic should address and provide a solution to a common problem; Well-Organized: You blog post should be well-organized; Personal and Engaging: Your blog post must feel like a conversation with a good friend; and Detailed: Your blog post must contain detailed information on the topic being addressed". That's all there is on creating a viral post. The rest of the guidance is similar. It is not worth the money. You can find better information with one Google search.

I can't believe I spent $15 on this. There is some useful information here, but it's ironically content poor (short and wordy) and very poorly written with typos all over the place. You'll get a few good tips and recommendations, but mainly it's information you can get for free in a couple hours online. I bought this because it had high ratings, and I'm really shocked that it did.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. The promise was to show someone how to replace their income with blogging. Well, yes and no would be my take on this.While Hirsch did briefly outline the mechanics of set up a website and the blogging tools needed to get started, there was not a lot of conversation about the things to look for and about the tools that are needed or how they might help a blogging website. Knowing in a book like this, it would be an impossible task to look at and review each tool, it would have helped the case to talk about the type of tools in depth, along with a strategy for their use. The when, what, and how of a tool like "x" would be useful and the things to look for when tool shopping.Some additional discussion regarding the keywords review tools would have been helpful also. This topic was covered in a few paragraphs, yet the discussion about it deserved a bigger paint brush. This might lead into a bigger discussion about how to use these tools to research things related to what one might want to blog about. Obviously it would be an extensive conversation to try to show someone how to find what they would want to blog about, but a step through of a blogging topic of any sort as an example would have been awesome.As I am not a blogging expert (yet...I did finish the book and plan to start one soon), I will say that I felt he covered all the steps for getting up and running. There are a few typos but the writing style was conversational and fun at times. For the price, it probably is the best outline style book for getting introduced to the things needed to get your own blog up and running.I will say this, Hirsch did take the time to put some reality into the blogging adventure. He talked about the work needed to make a go of it and the time and effort it takes to do this right.Is it the 'end all guide' to blogging? Well that is yet to be seen in my own results. Is it a good reference tool that can help you get started in the crazy world of blogging? It just might be.Well done overall and certainly worth the price.
