Another magisterial work by Tosches. Great literature and worth reading even if you're not particularly a Dean Martin fan (as I am not.)

A little robust on detail but otherwise a full look at Dean Martin's life and interactions.

I'm a little young to remember Dino, but I heard the book's author, Nick Tosches, interviewed on the WTF Podcast and thought it would make an interesting read. I wasn't disappointed.

Growing up with his music I could not believe the life this man led. He saw it all and nothing seemed to bother him. Just too cool even for his own good from his early days in NYC to his partnership with Jerry Lewis to the break up. Nothing seemed to matter. Forget the broads and booze his real love was golf and cowboy movies who would have thought? His indifference to the Mob, to the Kennedy's and even Sinatra, is priceless. GREAT BOOK!!! Didnt want it to end.

Great book if you want to know the history of Steubenville, Ohio. Seriously, this book is tough going in terms of keeping your interest. It is clear the author had very little information on Dean's formative years so he goes off on tangents about his home town, its political environment, business, and stories about Dean's relatives that really don't have any major relevance.I understand the need to provide context so we understand the subject and his motivations, but there is a point where it becomes too much and comes off as filler. The first couple of chapters could have been condensed into a couple of well-written and concise paragraphs.I found myself skipping ahead to chapters that actually had anecdotes and such about DEAN MARTIN, the supposed subject of the book. In short the book is overlong and could have used some serious editing. The author's writing style is also quite irritating at times and he makes the common mistake of speculating about what Dean may have been thinking when of course he has no way of knowing that.For a book about Dean that will keep you interested, I would suggest "Dean and Me (A Love Story)" by Jerry Lewis

I am a rabid "Rat Pack" fan living the life in Vegas. My wife and I are familars in the retro Lounges and Restaurants in town and we are in frequent company of entertainment folks from that era. We know many folks that have dined, drank, gambled,and played golf with Dean and Frank! This book perfectly lines up with the few of them that knew Dean best. I was admiring the beautiful prose while taking in the deep perceptions that I gleamed into the very heart and mind of this great entertainer. I have never read a more spot on insight and I'd recommend it to anyone that wants to feel that he or she actually knew him. I've actually started to read it again as I want to make sure I've taken it all in. Congratulations Mr. Tosches. I'm eager to read your other works!

While this book brought back some wonderful childhood memories with a handful of rhymes that were included, some I feel are just inappropriate for a child. For this reason, I decided to not give it to my niece for her birthday.

This book brought back many rhymes I had forgotten over time. Had to smile and even laugh when I first glanced through it from the memories that flooded my brain. Great times as a child jumping rope! Several of my friends and I decided to incorporate jumping rope as a way to help us maintain our health and what figure remains for our 45 plus year old body's. We are also learning new rhymes from the book as well. I did purchase two more copies for my 7 and 9 year old niece's. Enjoy! Note: I read several negative reviews regarding the content/words in some of the rhymes. I respect everyone's right to their opinion, and I am going to express my opinion too. In the 70's and 80's when I used the rhymes as a child, I did not truly understand the meaning of the rhymes nor did majority of my playmates. Yes, most of us were more naïve as children [back in the day]especially when compared to the children today [that is a good thing and a bad thing]. Which brings me to my main complaint, why be upset about the content of the rhymes when children are exposed to the constant bombardment of vulgarity and stupidity shown on TV, the sexual innuendo's and violence in cartoons, video games, the internet [social media sites included], cell phones, etc. These complainers must realize their children, whether willfully or not, probably know way more than we did at their age, and maybe even more than I do at 45 years of age. I would like to offer this advise, please focus on teaching your children how to write in cursive [it will benefit them when they see "Sign Here" on a form], teach them how to use a dictionary, and phonebook. Teach them how to interact socially, speaking with proper verbiage, and the attributes of respect, accountability and responsibility. Perhaps even going as far as being an example to them from a moral and ethical stand point. Thank You

I am in my mid thirties, and I bought this book to read with my 6 year old daughter, who has recently started to enjoy jump-roping.It starts out with a short history of jump-roping, which was nice, and there were a few rhymes I remembered from my childhood...but most of the rhymes are not that great. From nonsense to just bad in many cases.On the second page of rhymes there is one that starts : “sitting in a bar, smoking a cigar...”I suppose they are rhymes that are historically popular, but I didn’t find much value in reading them. There a handful of the 101 rhymes that are usefulJust not what I was looking for...

I was so very surprised to discover that many kids don't know jump rope rhymes. (Or fairy tales, or manners, but I digress.) I could have just looked these up online, but I wanted a book that I could hand to a kid and say, "here pick the one we'll jump next."

My 8 year old daughter enjoys the rhymes, but I wish she hadn’t received this gift. Some of the language is outdated and conveys themes and roles that don’t align with modern values. Some quotes from the book that I prefer not to expose my kids or their friends to: smoking a cigar, a big fat policeman grabs me by the collar and makes me pay a dollar, my old man wears calico britches, I love the boys and the boys love me. And that was just a sample from 4 of 60 pages.

Some of the rhymes are not suitable for a 7 year old girl. Tasteless jingles including smoking cigars, kissing on the lips etc.my granddaughter quietly slipped it to her mother and said “I don’t think this is for me”. I was disappointed

7 year old grand daughter can't get enough of the jumping. She loves to listen to the Anna Banana book while jumping. Both were a hit! I even jumped 5 times. Pretty good for a 69 yo gram! I'm going to keep practicing until I get to 10 and who knows where I'll go after that!

Brings you back to the schoolyard. You won't have to just count 1,2,3,4-- this book gives you find songs to challenge your littles and add flavor to their jump roping sessions. Perfect addition to our new rope! Great purchase!

This book was very well received and worth every cent! It's a fun book loaded with fun and amusing rhymes. It also makes a creative motivator for jump rope lovers!

Thoroughly engrossing tale of Early Florida settlers and their interaction with the land.There was so much to this story and because I live in South Florida and am familiar with many of the areas mentioned I felt a deep connection to this book.Vast in space and time, this novel is almost epic. It will resonate with anyone interested in the early agriculture, ranching, economy and role of the railroad in South Florida's progress.The story of the lives of the pioneers struggling to survive is woven into the land, braided with relationships with Native Americans and brought forward with concerns about the environment. Beautifully written with rich, colorful characters, this is a novel I will long remember!

I just got through reading A Land Remembered after having seen it in book stores over and over. I was always curious as to what it was about. Not being a native Floridian (grew up in California), I've been wanting to learn more about the history of Florida and Smith's book was a good way to get a better understanding of what life was like in Florida during and after the Civil War. What I found particularly interesting is the fact that it follows three generations of one family.As Smith's book is historical fiction, this family by name did not exist but it's a reflection of the families who did come South out of Georgia to build a future for themselves with grime and grit.It describes a time that is largely unknown to use today. The hard and grueling work of Tobias to carve out a place in the Floridian wilderness to establish his place. The bold and brave attitude that people had to have in order to build out in Florida. This is something that many people take for granted today and something that most of us will and have never known.I would highly recommend this book to anyway, especially people who live in Florida. It's a good way to get a better understanding of the place you live in.

Historical novel of the frontier in south Florida based on three generations of the MacIvey family – Tobias, Zeck, and Solomon. Starts just before the Civil War and continues up to the 1920’s real estate boom with an epilog shortly after 1960. The MacIvey fortune starts out by collecting and branding wild “yellow-hammer” cattle and then driving them through deep wilderness to a port on the west coast in the Fort Meyers area. Tobias frugally collects a fortune in hard cash while incidentally connecting with the clan of Tiger, a wild Seminole desperately seeking refuge in the swamps south of Lake Okeechobee. The Seminole connection eventually provides herding dogs Nip and Tuck and a tough little mashtackie horse that Zeck learns to expertly manage. A couple of tough former confederate soldiers join the crew for trail drives. Zeck connects with both Seminole girl Tawana and a storekeeper’s daughter Glenda to produce sons Toby and Sol. There is an expedition to roust and then hang rustling and bushwhacking desperados down towards the Ten Thousand Islands. Tobias sees that there is a future in orange groves as the range fills up and fences or development bock the old trail drive routes. Wives also wisely insure that land is purchased and titles secured. This kind of patient acquisition eventually serves as the base for a great real estate empire. This is especially so for fortuitous purchase of drainable swampland below the great lake which proves to be valuable produce land, and apparently useless mangrove swamp land with adjacent beach front that eventually becomes Miami Beach. A major theme here is the tragic loss for all three MacIveys of the women they love. Toby breaks with Sol when he understands that his half-brother has been instrumental in the destruction of his pristine homeland. Sol himself sadly discovers what he has done to that former wilderness paradise even as he recognizes that development would have come whether or not he personally took part in it. In fact, Sol’s outrage when an over eager caretaker obliterates his cherished family home echoes Toby’ much greater loss. The homestead is somewhere on the upper Kissimmee drainage. Some of the landscape description is relevant – the custard-apple thickets, wiregrass prairies, buttonbush clumps along sloughs, the sea of saw grass in the everglades proper, gumbo-limbo and live oaks on hammocks, and the expanse of pickerel weed around the edges of the lake. Wonder if the great wall of mosquitos emerging from the salt grass could be as lethal as portrayed? A lively action story full of well-wrought sentimentality along with a good deal of coincidence in a way novel master Dickens would have heartily approved.

One of our book club members chose this book for a ;monthly meeting. As I read , i felt that the characters were 2-dimensional: either "good" or "bad", and the development of the 3-generational saga not realistic. How can I give this author a "great"? The story just sucked me in. I stayed up olate night after night absorbed in the unfolding story. Other book club members reported the same response. Various members reported that they had fact-checked the major weather and historical eventws described in the book, and they had occurred in the manner described and at the time described. I had never thought of Florida as a "frontier", however I came to think of this book as historical fiction, not of the family, but of the state of Florida itself. I would reacommend this book.

Historical fiction can be about the history or the story, but rarely are both captured so well as in this little fast read. The characters come down from Georgia to start a life, scratching out an existence of sorts. Bit by bit by trial and error, the family tames the wilderness in extraordinary fashion. Several good humorous stories between the twists and turns of frontier tragedy. Great book!

I’ve lived on the coast of Florida for nearly 25 years. I also have a college degree in forestry from Auburn. As a lifetime outdoorsman, this tale of the development of Florida from wilderness to urban was an engaging read. It is a great reminder of the internal battles we all face of greed, anger and selfishness. But there are positive lessons too of hard work, family devotion and racial harmony. Although I don’t agree with every spiritual and moral lesson in the book, I recommend it to anyone wanting to feel caught up in a story that feels authentic while also learning some history of our state from the mid-1800’s to the mid-1900’s.

This series is not just for kids.....or it is for the kid still living in adults. These books have changed my life. TA Barron is an amazing story teller and clearly has real esoteric knowledge that he is weaving into his tale of Merlin. These books will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder for the magic that lives in this world and is born out of our hearts. Do yourself a favor and enjoy them!

While this book was written for the young adult I found the content applicable to all of us as we ponder where our life is going and how well we measure to our own world view of ourselves. I have always found the Merlin persona a delightful archetype reflection of what is our reality. When you look in the mirror who do you see? Most likely a different person is reflected at each stage of our lives. Found the book content thought provoking at this later stage of my life. I closed the book with a smile.

I am completely in love with the central character. Perfect flowing storyline and so detailed.

Great series! Purchased as gift for grandson!

He has read the first two and wanted to continue on with the series. I had purchased the first two while on vacation and it was nice to see I could give him the next two in the series. I'm sure he will be looking for more in the future.

A nice time travel story and it was nice to see {Spoiler} young King Arthur.

While previous books are building up the back story of Merlin in his younger years, we finally gets a glimpse of the Merlin we have all come to know and love. Our young Merlin is blossoming into a man, and accepted who he is. We get a preview of what is to come in the following books, and it has finally gotten to the point where it has become easier to emerse yourself into the world and not want to come out.

We are just back from a month in New Zealand, all South Island, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book for trip planning and as a resource while there. South Island is all about amazing nature and that's the focus of this book. Who needs another book with restaurant and hotel recommendations when there are great resources for those things online? This book tells you what you REALLY need to know. Some things I love about it:- that focus on nature, hikes and sights- the book's overall organization and bite sized sections for each sight listed- the associated website / blog with additional photos and recent updates which can't be done in print every day- GoogleEarth map coordinates for navigating to the right starting points for every sight- the author's conversational (and enthusiastic) writing style- the Obscure-O-Meter which sets your expectations for crowds vs solitude at the sights- time estimates for hikes, seeing the sightsIn short... everything about it that it does different than standard "travel guide" books! It's just what we needed.I was so enamored and appreciative of the book that I also just sent the author a "thanks" email. In it I listed some of the places we went that we likely would have missed if we'd stuck to the usual info sources. I just jotted some down quickly and suddenly realized there were 13 of them! All of them were special and created great memories. Think about that. You're likely going to spend several thousand dollars for a trip to New Zealand from the US. So spending $20 or whatever to find those special places that create really special memories?.... a no brainer.I might be gushing here a bit more than normal but just reliving the amazing trip and keeping it real about this book's part in that. I hope this review prompts you to get the book and enhance your trip.

Even as Scott would say in the book about an amazing obscure trek, shhh don't tell anyone about this! All kidding aside, this guide book is a MUST have for anyone visiting New Zealand. No need for any other guide books that are just going to take you to the places and tours that paid them to get into their book. You can get all that information through a google search. Scott writes everything from first-hand experience and it is all extremely detailed. I promise you can feel comfortable ignoring the bad reviews on this book because "it is not in color" and "it doesn't have maps." The book being in black and white makes no difference and maps are not necessary in the book (even though he does have basic maps showing approximate location of each trek in each region).Scott lays out tons of different treks around the island and breaks them down by region. He then also breaks each region down by giving you which ones are treks you can't pass up. Even more helpful was that he describes both how to get to the trailhead and what to expect on the trail in great detail. Scott also gives you an idea of how crowded the trek typically is and there are exact coordinates for each trailhead. This is where not needing detailed maps in the book comes into play. Instead, download the Maps.ME app to your phone before your trip and put in the coordinates for the treks you want to do, then save the locations as a favorite. When you arrive you will have a GPS app for driving that will take you to all the locations and it does not require any data from your plan to work. Oh and guess what, you can then see the sight for yourself.....in color!I can't tell you how many times we passed up the jam packed parking lot for a popular trek to instead opt for one that Scott suggested and had our minds blown by how beautiful it was and how few people we encountered. This book is worth its weight in gold, it did not leave our side the entire trip

We have been living in NZ for the past 9 months and were lucky enough to be recommended this book (along with its North Island compatriot) early on. We love being outside and adventuring around our new country and this book is ALWAYS our guiding light on what to do. We have been utterly astounded with some of Scott's entries and have loved every tramp, waterfall, lookout, beach, blowhole, etc. that he has ever led us to. Scott is very clear in his writing, directions, times, difficulty, etc. and adds the perfect amount of humour. We just finished a 10-day trip around the South Island over the Christmas and New Years holidays and used this book to guide our entire trip. Scott, thank you for writing this book, we will continue to buy every new edition that you release!

Great book! Super helpful and honest. I just returned from a 3 week campervan trip to NZ and used Scott's book as my primary guidebook. Scott's reviews of off-the-road sights were spot on and his humor and writing style provided us with an honest overview of the different stops along the road. Note: NZ has little-to-no internet available in remote areas so the book's references to the online maps & tips that accompany the book are not helpful once in NZ. However, his brief directional descriptions were usually adequate enough to find the point of interest. Scott focuses on obscure and interesting sights, not so much on the well known or difficult Walks. As an avid long distance hiker, I found that combining Scott's book with information at the local I-Sites or DOC offices was the best way to get the most out of my trip. I was very glad I purchased this book over a Lonely Planet guide or something. Since I was campervaning, I had no use for a guidebook focused on hotel or restaurant recommendations. NZ Frenzy was perfect for a no-frills traveler who wanted the truth about where to stop and visit along the (narrow!) roads of the South Island!!
