Review

"I cannot contain my admiration. No other book on Lewis has ever shown such comprehensive knowledge of his works and such depth of insight. This will make Michael Ward's name." --Walter Hooper, Literary Adviser to the Estate of C.S. Lewis"Noting Michael Ward's claim that he has discovered "the secret imaginative key" to the Narnia books, the sensible reader responds by erecting a castle of scepticism. My own castle was gradually but utterly demolished as I read this thoughtful, scholarly, and vividly-written book. If Ward is wrong, his wrongness is cogent: it illuminates and delights. But I don't think he is wrong. And in revealing the role of the planets in the Chronicles, Ward also gives us the fullest understanding yet of just how deeply Lewis in his own fiction drew upon those medieval and renaissance writers he so loved." --Alan Jacobs, Professor of English, Wheaton College and author of The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C.S. Lewis"Michael Ward presents an absorbing, learned analysis of C.S. Lewis's bestselling and beloved series, The Chronicles of Narnia. Readily accessible to the average reader, Ward's book reads so much like a detective story that it's difficult to put down." --Armand M. Nicholi, Jr. M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and author of The Question of God: C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud"All who have enjoyed the The Chronicles of Narnia and indeed are interested in any aspect of Lewis's imaginative work should read Michael Ward's book. He argues convincingly for a hitherto unrecognized inner structure of the Chronicles, and gives excellent reasons for understanding why Lewis should have worked in such a mysterious way, his wonders to perform. Ward has an encyclopedic knowledge of Lewis's writings and uses it to support his theory that each of the seven volumes of the The Chronicles of Narnia is based on the classical, medieval and renaissance mythography of one of the then seven planets. Even those critics who dislike the Narnia books in principle because of their implicit Christianity must consider their planetary structure and its significance. Michael Ward has made an outstanding contribution to Lewis studies." --Derek Brewer, Emeritus Professor of English, University of Cambridge"Planet Narnia is not simply one for the fans. Lewis had, and has, many enemies. This brilliant study may not persuade them that he was right, but it should convince them of his extraordinary subtlety." --The Independent"MIchael Ward's stunning work of scholarship has shone a celestial light on the Chronicles of Narnia, and it will undoubtedly send many old friends of Narnia back through the wardrobe to explore the land again with new eyes."--Church of England Newspaper"An argument which is at once subtle and sensible, a combination not often found in modern academic writing. . . . This is an outstanding guide not only to Narnia, but also to Lewis's thinking as a whole, and to the 'genial' medieval world-view which he so much loved and wished to restore, not in fact but through fantasy."--Books & Culture "Planet Narnia is one of the most creative works of scholarship I have read. . . . Ward has made a brilliant discovery. . . . [B]y thinking seriously about Lewis's life-long interest in the medieval imagination, Ward has uncovered a symbolic structure in the seven books that deepens both their literary and theological significance. He also reveals Lewis to be a better writer than we knew . . . [A]n important work of scholarship . . . absorbing . . . serious . . . rich . . . a brilliant work to be savoured, read often and kept at hand when re-reading Lewis's novels."--The Catholic Register "Brilliantly conceived. Intellectually provocative. Rhetorically convincing. A panegyric is not the usual way to begin a book review, but Michael Ward's Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C.S. Lewis is worthy of such praise. I do not mean to suggest it is a perfect book, yet what Ward attempts - the first rigorously comprehensive reading of C.S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia - is magisterial . . . stimulating and engaging . . . important . . . thoughtful, informed, perceptive. . . . [E]very serious student of Lewis should buy Planet Narnia. In effect, it is the starting point from now forward for all serious scholarly discussions of the Chronicles of Narnia."--Christianity and Literature "This feat of scholarly detective work will absorb your attention from start to finish. Michael Ward proposes a heretofore unnoticed structure that unifies the Chronicles of Narnia, based on Lewis's lifelong engagement with medieval astrology. . . . The result is both surprising and persuasive."--Christianity Today "Ward builds up a painstaking case based on Lewis's other writings, particularly his works on the medieval world-view and his "planetary" trilogy. And a compelling case it is, too, built on exhaustive evidence of the way in which Lewis the Christian convert still found the imaginative universe of paganism and medieval astrology rich and allusive. . . . Ward's painstaking scholarship should help dispel two critical stereotypes: Lewis the unsubtle Christian propagandist, and Lewis the literary Reliant Robin parked next to the Rolls-Royce that is J.R.R. Tolkien."--Church Times "Ward's contention, simply stated, is breathtakingly elegant." --The Journal of Religion "One comes away from this study convinced that Ward's theory is believable, particularly given Lewis's knowledge of medieval scholarship and Christianity. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers, all levels."--Choice "All Narnia specialists should read this book . . . the lengthy footnotes and interesting illustrations paralleling Pauline Baynes's artistry with classical pictures of the gods are further evidence of meticulous research. . . . Ward's discovery is crucial to our appreciation of Narnia."--Christian Librarian: The Journal of the Librarians' Christian Fellowship "An intriguing analysis."--Sacramento News & Reviews "The work that can be considered the most groundbreaking is Michael Ward's Planet Narnia. This text offers an entirely new way of understanding and reading both Lewis's science fiction Space Trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia...Far from spoiling or seeming to devalue the message and rich beauty of Lewis' works, Ward's revelations serve to deepen one's appreciation for and understanding of them. Ward is a thorough and careful guide who provides an in-depth textual study of how Lewis's fascination with the medieval understanding of the cosmos is found throughout the texts."--Anglican and Episcopal History

On its face, the Chronicles of Narnia is a fairy tale about children who find their way into a magical land with a god-like lion. Secondarily, there are the underlying Christian themes of sacrificial death and resurrection in the first volume, and the second coming in the last. Between these two volumes, the Christian themes are less dominant, so is there yet a third reading that provides a golden thread of coherence among all seven volumes? The author makes the case that the secret key to the Chronicles lies in medieval astrology and pagan mythology. Specifically, the seven volumes were intended by Lewis to each convey a sense of one of the seven deities represented by the seven planets of classical astrology, namely (in order of appearance): Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Saturn. As most other reviews have found, the author’s evidence and argument are persuasive on the whole. But what is the import of this hidden symbolism? On the one hand, the book can come across as a long but trivial easter-egg hunt: Mars is associated with war, trees, iron and woodpeckers, and oh look, in Prince Caspian the children enter Narnia in a thick forest to fight in a war, there are iron bars on a wooden chest in an armory, woodland dryads battle the Telmarines, and arrows striking trees sound like a woodpecker! And so on and so forth. But Lewis had more in mind than merely “conducting a playful literary experiment, curious to know whether his readers would recognize the Chronicles symbolic structure.” (234). Rather, Lewis was determined to communicate eternal truths through symbols and fairy tale - rather than reason and apologetics - in the aftermath of his humiliating loss in a public debate to a young philosophy student who had openly challenged his argument against naturalism in his apologetical work Miracles, A Preliminary Study. (215.) According to the author, Lewis recast his philosophical arguments from Miracles into imaginative story-telling and symbolism in the Chronicles, thereby pre-empting further rational critique. (219)Lewis was inclined toward the Jungian theory that universal archetypes are present in the human subconscious, and these primordial presences could be invoked through symbols that represented the type. (229) Citing Jung, Lewis stated, “Fairy tale liberates Archetypes which dwell in the collective unconscious.” (229.) Consequently, it does not matter that the modern reader lacks training in the classics so as to associate fighting and iron and trees with Mars because the same inner urgings that led the ancients to Ares continue to operate in modern man below the level of consciousness. If you can steep a man’s imagination with enough battles, trees, iron and woodpeckers, you can tap the same vein that caused his ancestors to worship the god of war. Likewise, get someone immersed in a story with “conjugating” beasts, “climactic” scenes, “orgasmic” moments, comely women and copper, and eventually their inner being will be tingling for Venus, the goddess of erotic desire. (179-182). According to the author, Lewis’s skill at secretly arousing the planetary archetypes universally present within all humans accounts for the Chronicles’ broad-based popularity. (230-231.)The main drawback here is that the author simply accepts the underlying assumption that there really is a collective unconscious of primordial archetypes that symbolically manifest through human imagination in the form of ancient myths and fairy tales. If that foundation itself is but a cleverly devised myth - and the author offers nothing to prove otherwise - then the whole edifice collapses into a “playful literary experiment.” An amusement, and little more. The author devotes significant space to the question of why Lewis never mentioned his grand unifying theory of the Chronicles; but that’s a no-brainer. If your goal is to send secret coded messages to a person’s subconscious via hidden symbols in a fairy tale, the last thing you’d want to do is tell them about it. That would be akin to an illusionist first explaining his trick to an audience and then trying to fool them with it. If someone reads in The Magician’s Nephew that Fledge’s wings were copper-color and immediately thinks, “There he goes again with those planetary archetypes,” they are not likely to then subconsciously connect with their inner Aphrodite. The whole point of the symbolist’s art is to by-pass the rational mind and directly trigger metaphysical intuition. But once the mind is alerted to the ruse, its then near impossible to “steal past the watchful dragons.”All this pagan idolatry wouldn’t sit well with the multitudes of Christians who love the Chronicles and whom the author, presumably, would like to buy this book, so the author is quick to point out that the seven gods of mythology subconsciously adored by the Chronicles’ readers are none other than different facets of the Christ-figure Aslan. Though the female sex-goddess Venus presents something of a poser for this schema, “the answer we suggest is that Aslan is feminized” in The Magician’s Nephew. (185.) But this maneuver then begs the question of whether the intent here is to conform the planetary archetypes to Christ, or Christ to the planetary archetypes. In Jungian terms, the question reduces to: is Christ a primordial unconscious archetype? The Jungian answer is yes, and the author's thesis is aligned with this response.

"Planet Narnia" made me enjoy the Narnia tales ten times as much as I had before and opened up an entire cosmos of symbolism for future stories. Dr. Ward shows how the medieval understanding of the planets (which hold “permanent value as spiritual symbols") is a major driving force behind The Chronicles of Narnia. We have the complete set: Jupiter (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Mars (Prince Caspian), the sun (The Voyage of the Dawn Treader), the moon (The Silver Chair), Mercury (The Horse and His Boy), Venus (The Magician’s Nephew), Saturn (The Last Battle). But the symbolism isn’t true for Narnia alone. Ward demonstrates how it is also behind much of Lewis’ poetry and the space trilogy, especially "That Hideous Strength." Thus, behind much of Lewis’ fictional work is the “discarded image” he loved so well.Skeptics will insist that the branches here are just too skinny, but in Ward’s defense is Lewis himself: "Supposing you had before you a manuscript of some great work, either a symphony or a novel. There then comes to you a person, saying, 'Here is a new bit of the manuscript that I found; it is the central passage of that symphony, or the central chapter of that novel. The text is incomplete without it. I have got the missing passage which is really the center of the whole work.' The only thing you could do would be to put this new piece of the manuscript in that central position, and then see how it reacted on the whole of the rest of the work. If it constantly brought out new meanings from the whole of the rest of the work, if it made you notice things in the rest of the work which you had not noticed before, then I think you would decide that it was authentic. On the other hand, if it failed to do that, then, however attractive it was in itself, you would reject it" (Grand Miracle)."Planet Narnia" reveals the center of the Narnian symphony, and suddenly all the sounds not only make more sense, but are more beautiful than ever.

Michael Ward has written a deep analysis of the writings of C.S. Lewis. Of particular interest to me was his alignment of the seven chronicles of Narnia with the seven planets of the medieval cosmology. I could have wished he had included some tables lining everything up on a page or two, but perhaps he wanted the reader to do that. In addition to the Chronicles of Narnia, Ward has also shown how Lewis made use of the medieval cosmology in his poem "The Planets" and also in the so called space trilogy. This is a fascinating overview of Lewis' writings and a helpful frame work to organize them. Although many attempts have been made to discover the organizing principle of the Chronicles, I really think that Ward has hit the nail on the head. His careful and comprehensive explanation throughout this book of how the planets and the gods associated with them have been used to guide the material of each chronicle and to display the Creator of all planets is not only convincing, but also enlightening.

While I do think a fan of C.S. Lewis can pick this up and read it, you have to understand that this was written by an Oxford Professor. It reads like it, so this is NOT for light reading. If that's what you're looking for... great. This book is excellent; filled with details that you haven't read anywhere else. That being said, this is very much a book for the educated, so if you're intimidated by that, skip it. For an alternative, head over to YouTube and watch Dr. Ryan Reeves lecture where he gives an overview of what Dr. Michael Ward has written about.

The last book in the Valiant series wraps things up better than readers could have hoped for bringing the series full circle.Fallon and her band of gladiatrix sisters have won their battle and reclaimed the Ludus Achillea, but it came at a price. Cai, Fallon’s love has lost his Decurion rank and is now having to serve as one of Caesar’s Gladiators for helping in the uprising. Fallon is fighting for his freedom and learns that Caesar’s enemies are planning revenge. These enemies assassinate Caesar and leave Fallon and the others with no one to protect them and on a mission to save Cleopatra, who could very easily be their next target. They must work together to free Cai and get Cleopatra out of the city before the bloodshed spreads.I have loved this series since the first book came out. The female gladiators are strong, resilient and determined in every challenge they face. This is the perfect series for young girls looking for strong female leads that face the odds and learn from their mistakes and adversaries to come out on top. Fallon has always felt behind her sister and trying to prove herself. In this final book in the series, readers see her come into her own and find a strength she didn’t know she had deep within herself. I love the way she is shown strong but also flawed and afraid at times. She relies on those around her to help her make the hard decisions and face the toughest of enemies. It took me a while to get through this because I had to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I needed soak in every word and detail to really get a connection with the characters and what is about to happen in the story. These stories really are the better stories that I take with me and remember long after I have turned the last page instead of looking back a year later and questioning if I actually read it or not. I would recommend that readers start with the first two in the series before reading this one, there is just too much back story that will keep this moving forward instead of seeming confusing. For readers that enjoy a great historical fiction with lots of action and strong female leads, I highly recommend The Triumphant, they won’t be disappointed.

Loved it. Lesley has an amazing gift of writing so very well. The way she can balance romance and action with a plot twist at places you don't expect

I was super excited about this finale and it was pretty much everything I wanted! I'd greatly missed Fallon, Cai, and the Ludus ladies, and was thrilled to see them all again. The story was fast-paced, action-packed, and full of heart. The story picked up fairly quickly from where the previous books left off, leading to a series of events that saw the girls of Fallon's ludus on the run to new places and fighting for the people they love. Old and new characters emerge, and while I found the ending to be a little to short, in comparison to the other action scenes filling the story, it was no less what I wanted. The characters continued to grow, with Fallon, Cai, and Elka each battle for top spot in my heart. Fallon did the most growing of course, as she needed to come to terms with letting others help her and not being responsible for every bad thing that happens. Cai was a swooning romantic, as always, and Elka is the gladiator bestie we all wish we had in our groups.I would have liked a little more time with the villains so I could understand their motivations, but there was one that was a bit of a surprise to me. I also think the book could have been longer, but it clearly wanted to wow the readers with its great action scenes, and in that aspect, it certainly succeeded!I'm truly going to miss these gladiator girls and their adventures. These are some of my favourite types of books and I really want to see more of them on shelves. But until then, I'll have epic memories of some of my favourite warrior ladies!

Great book in an already amazing series.I loved Fallon from the first page and she grew in strength and spirit throughout the series.I loved seeing her become a strong, smart leader, who believed in herself. After Caesar is assassinated, Fallon rallies her war band and Cai's friends to get Cleopatra out of Rome.Fallon had a lot of self doubts , but when action was required, she leaped without hesitating. She finally saw herself as others see her. She became Caesar's greatest female Gladiatrix for a reason. The Triumphant was an action packed emotional read. I loved every minute of it and didn't want the book to end, even as I rushed to read it!We saw who Fallon and her gladiatrix sisters really were in Alexandria, Egypt. They could have led a life of carefree luxury but they choose to follow her, fight beside her and start a new chapter in their lives.I loved being a part of Fallon's journey. She made friends and enemies, lost loved ones, learned to be suspicious but always supportive and true to her sisters in arms. The respect she earned, in and out of the arena, showed what a great leader she would become.I enjoyed this series and would recommend it to all who love great story telling, action, adventure, friendship with a dash of romance.

A history of World War I from the background behind the politics of the area well before the war, to the final armistice. Told in a non technical style, it is easily understood and not dry.

I've read several hundred books on WW1. I was surprised-- maybe shocked-- by how much "new" stuff I got from this book.Especially when you consider it's not particularly large. For a one-volume "general history" of the ENTIRE war, it contains a remarkable amount of interesting and intriguing facts, mostly put in context with interesting stories. It's a great read, and, if a person wanted to keep JUST ONE book on WW1, this would be my recommendation.

This is, without doubt, the best history book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. Meyer has managed to be highly readable and informativeat the same time. I had no insight into WWI at all, and now I'm tempted to re-read this 700 page book immediately because I couldn't put it down the first time. He doesn't just hit the reader with names, places, statistics and endless war logistics and battles. It's all there, but in context, as he intersperses "background" chapters between telling of the progress of the war itself. Please Mr. Meyer, write another book about the time between the two great wars!

This book is part of the pile I’m wading through to research a new story idea. I know I want to set it in England sometime between the end of the first world war and just after the second, but I don’t know exactly when. So, I figured I’d start with the first world war and work my way forward. This book is an excellent overview of the whole thing. The war is such a massive topic that it is almost impossible to cover everything, but this succeeds for the most part. Meyer covers everything in chronological order, so you get a feel for what was happening everywhere at any given time. He also includes small sections of historical background between each chapter the provides valuable insight into things like the history of the Balkans, the Junckers, and the Hohenzollerns. The only area that I thought was a little lacking were details on the war in Italy, but that is a minor quibble. It’s quite long, and really gives you the sense of the kind of meatgrinder the war was. I highly recommend it for anyone new to the topic.

Not much new here but a good general overview of WWI. An excellent book on the causes is Clark's "The Sleepwalkers". Meyer overlooks the fact that France had loaned Russia enormous sums prior to the outbreak of war with the particular aim of tying the Russians to France in an alliance against Germany. Meyer's pretty good on the dynamics of Britain's involvement, the Home Rule issue and Grey's essentially duplicitous nature. He's better on Wilson's actions in getting America involved. Simply put, the US had loaned Britain and France so much money by the third year of the war that the Americans couldn't afford to let them lose. The more history I read and the older I get the more I realize that if you can follow the money trail you can generally figure out why things happen. Well written, easy to read. Good introduction for someone new to this subject.

Thinking about the First World War centennial, I picked up “A World Undone,” G. J. Meyer’s fairly recent (2006) and highly detailed account of the conflict. I don’t have the credentials to evaluate the quality of the scholarship, but the lengthy book certainly conveys the scale of the calamity and the scope of the human suffering it caused. And yet the war was almost an accident—petty conflicts and diplomatic miscommunications sparking mechanized slaughter on a scale unforeseen even by the generals and politicians so ineptly managing it. Even more sobering, the 1918 Armistice and subsequent Treaty of Versailles did little more than set the stage for World War II.“A World Undone” conveys all of this with different degrees of success, sometimes overwhelming readers with battlefield strategies and sometimes moving them to feel what modern war was like for soldiers and civilians alike. As it should be, “A World Undone” is profoundly unsettling, maybe especially for readers who think we live in the worst of times today.

Never before have I read a book with so much information presented in such a logical, easily digestible way. Like many "history buffs" I know plenty about World War II but much less about the war twenty years prior that caused it. This book changed that. What I like most are the background sections on the key players interspersed throughout the book - such a unique but great method to keep the reader learning without bogging down the narrative. If the book started with all of that background, I am sure many readers would get dissuaded from finishing it because it's not quite as interesting as the war itself. Once you're invested in the story of the war, however, the background on the key players is fascinating. Highly recommended.

World War 1 has always held a special fascination for me.for one thing Americans care to know little about it because American troops didn't get into the combat until the last 6 months or so of the war. Also, it was an era before TV and radio. I suspect even Americans living at that time must have understood little about it as well. Yet, it was the conflict that set in motion all the other conflicts of our time. It's causes were more interesting that those of the Second World War. In the latter war, it was an open and shut case of Hitler wanting war at a time when no one else in Europe did. On the contrary, historians of the First World War are not in agreement on its causes or even who or which nation is primarily to blame for it. The battles of the First World War were slaughter fests over blasted, moonscaped earth conjuring up images of Armageddon. GJ Meyer does a terrific job in answering all the big questions and leaves no major topic neglected. Essential reading for everyone wanting to know how the present came to be.

One Woman's Army: The Commanding General of Abu Ghraib Tells Her Story

From Booklist

The charge to find intelligence for use against terrorists with no clear rules as to how to do it led inevitably to abuses at Abu Ghraib, asserts Karpinski, the commanding general in charge of military police at the prison made infamous by Saddam Hussein and even more so by American troops. In a bid not to be defined by Abu Ghraib, Karpinski tells the story of her life in the military leading to her command of the Iraqi prison, including her stint with the reserves and her deployment to the first Gulf War, where she earned a Bronze Star. When she was assigned to oversee MPs at Abu Ghraib, Karpinski found herself doubly resented, as a reservist and as a woman. She details the conflicts with military culture and an old-boy network, including Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. She describes little support from the regular army and no clear chain of command as military intelligence stepped up harsh treatment of prisoners in search of "actionable intelligence." Karpinski accepts her own shortcomings but maintains that she was made a scapegoat in the shameful events for which, other than herself, only lower-level servicemen have been punished. This is a completely fascinating look at a troubling event from the perspective of a woman who has been on the frontline. REVWRCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This book was recommended to me by an Army Reservist with the 800th Military Police Brigade who served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.In February 2003, Janis Karpinski thought the army was "paying her back with the greatest assignment of her career". She was promoted to Brigadier General and would command the 800th Military Police Brigade...First, the facts:FACT: In 1977, a US Army Recruiter "sold" George and Janis Karpinski on a "joint military career". He told them "the Army had a policy of keeping married officers together. They could travel and see the world arm-in-arm." They should have known it was too good to be true. This would not be the last time that the US Army blatantly lied to Janis Karpinski...FACT: General Karpinski won a Silver Star for her service in Operation Desert Shield.FACT: As Major Karpinski, she worked directly with the UAE's President's wife, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak — who was head of the UAE's Women's Federation — to establish a women's military training program in the United Arab Emirates. Only women can train women in Arab countries. Major Karpinski's team included one Major and nine non-commissioned officers (NCOs). These women were recommended by their Commanding Officers (COs) and the NCOs had all been Drill Sergeants. Major Karpinski would spend four years immersed in this program.FACT: After landing in Tampa from a business trip in October 2002, Karpinski noticed her day planner and her wallet were stolen when she stopped at a grocery store. She reported her loss to the police and American Express. She went to the Post Exchange to cash a check, but had no ID. The only option she had was to buy a few items and write a check for $50.00 over the cost. While picking up a few items, her cell phone rang and she dug into her purse to answer it, a guard saw her remove her bottle of lotion, then put it back in her purse. She paid for her purchases and received her $50.00. Upon leaving, the guard detained her and asked her to go to his office. She thought it was because she had no ID card. He said he saw her putting something from the shelf into her bag and singled out her moisturizer — which was only half full (she explained that she used it on flights and pointed out that it obviously was only half full). Nonetheless, he filled out a report and kept the moisturizer. In a couple of weeks, she received a call from McDill's Legal Office. The woman apologised "profusely, saying she examined the bottle and recognized that it could not have been stolen from the exchange." She thought the matter was dropped. Years later, the unsubstantiated allegation of "shoplifting" became one of the Army's charges against her.FACT: "When things went wrong at Abu Ghraib prison, nobody stood out as a more convenient target than the female General who looked out of place from the perspective of all those male warriors."FACT: GITMO (Guantanamo Bay) had eight hundred Military Policemen (MPs) to guard six hundred eighty prisoners. In comparison, In Iraq, there were fewer than three hundred MPs to guard seven thousand prisoners at Abu Ghraib alone (there were seventeen prisons in Iraq).FACT: Major Janis Karpinski always gives credit to her soldiers: "My Reserve soldiers marched into that mess, made a decent place out of it against all odds, completed their mission, and left with honor; mourning their fallen comrades. Most of us survived ... The 800th MP Brigade plunged in to fight it with whatever people and resources they had. We made do, we focused on the essentials. If we could bring the situation under control, our successors would have an easier time with it ... When the 800th reached Iraq, only one in seventeen prisons under our authority was functional (when Saddam knew war was coming, he emptied all of the prisons into the streets — except for political prisoners — those he just shot). When General Karpinski and the 800th left, "thanks to the determination of my 3,400 soldiers and the hard work of prisons chief, Bill Irvine, all seventeen were functional." At the same time, she is very hard on herself, wondering how these abuses happened, if she should have seen the atrocities coming, why she had no idea what was going on, what was the full and real story of what happened at Abu Ghraib et cetera...FACT: "An overwhelming majority of the 800th Military Police Brigade maintained their military discipline." I believe that General Karpinski more than maintained her military discipline and did an amazing job with her 3,400 soldiers.FACT: The Pentagon relieved General Karpinski of duty, but no-one bothered to tell her. Instead, they held a press briefing to make that announcement. The first she knew about it was when a reporter from NBC called her after the Pentagon briefing and asked for her reaction to having been relieved of her command, all she could say was that it was a surprise to her. In spite of having General Karpinski's cell phone number, her home telephone number, her brother's telephone number and her email address, the Pentagon insisted that they could not contact her. Apparently, they could not pick up a telephone and dial her number like the reporter had done. When she asked how they attempted to contact her — which number(s) had they called or did they email her — she was stonewalled. It was obvious they had never attempted to contact her and in my opinion, they held the press conference only to humiliate and embarrass her further.FACT: All of the final charges against General Karpinski had one common denominator: not one of them had anything to do with the treatment of Iraqi detainees in cell block 1A of Abu Ghraib prison. She was formally relieved of duty, as she had expected. General Janis Karpinski was turned into a scapegoat. She had made the mistake of being a female General in a "man's Army". Those higher up in her chain of command were not sanctioned at all — their careers stayed on track, they faced no charges for their appalling behaviour. Why? Simply because they were men who always referred to the Army as "my Army." It was just as much General Karpinski's Army! She had more than proven herself worthy.FACT: "President Bush delivered a blow I had not expected — vacating my promotion to General and demoting me back to a Colonial." In this reader's opinion, Bush should be ashamed of himself. The Army had already investigated charges against her and taken steps to discipline her, this was an unnecessary slap in the face after being a career soldier with an exemplary record!I know Bush was the "Commander in Chief" and needed to flex his muscles as such. I guess he felt like he had to be seen as doing something about that "awful situation that took place over there", but he should have chosen those higher up the chain of command to punish — like any of the MEN of higher rank that she would approach for assistance, only to be told "make it work, Janis!" (they were not even professional enough to address General Karpinski by her rank).FACT: General Janis Karpinski and Colonial George Karpinski served a combined total of fifty-five years in the US Army.General Karpinski writes "It is immensely difficult to accept these verdicts of my government and, yes, my Army when I know in my heart I did not deserve them." This reader could not agree more! This book and others like it (I could give you a few titles) should be read by the same public that condemned General Janis Karpinski and the soldiers in her command. We were so ready to believe the media sh*tstorm and their attempts to condemn everyone in the military that served at all the prisons. That will never happen because those few "bad apples" overshadowed all of the hard work of the majority of all soldiers — active duty to reserves. The treatment of this honorable officer was uncalled for — her higher ups (like Generals Sanchez and Miller — and even Donald Rumsfeld) should have been disciplined, but those men never faced charges (ONLY because they were men).

Page 221: “ … Abu Ghraib, playground of American abusers. No caricature could be more unjust to the thousands of American soldiers who served honorably at Abu Ghraib …”Page 67: “I wanted to serve with professional soldiers, thanking God that the Vietnam era of dope-smoking draftees was over.”General Karpinski can dish it out but can’t take it. In one short, sweeping sentence, she dismissed an entire generation of hundreds of thousands of Vietnam era veterans without any further elaboration. Coming from a flag officer, it carries a significant sting of insult. Putting it in print etches it in stone. It was challenging for some of us to read past page 67.One can legitimately question her tendency to jump to conclusions and over-simplify a situation.Nevertheless, she provides great insight into what it takes for a female to break into a man’s Army and advance through the ranks. Her work in the United Arab Emirates was most praiseworthy. Her experiences as a “regular” vis-à -vis a “reservist” were enlightening. The dilemma for any member of the military in dealing with directives from above (orders) is finely illustrated in her experiences at Abu Ghraib. She was a scapegoat caught in a political quagmire (ironically similar in many ways to Vietnam). She was trapped in a dysfunctional chain of command that was severely broken. Army Intelligence was inserted within her area of command but without command. Her command was a corps of Army Reserve Military Police throughout Iraq that included all of its prisons. She fell victim to General Miller’s advisement to higher authorities to carry out illegal torture as his command was doing in Guantanamo. In Abu Ghraib, the difficulties were compounded because there were many more prisoners (including civilian for civil, not war crimes) and far less staff. Interrogators inserted to torture could be government civilians (CIA) or even private contractors. Military Police under Karpinski’s command were, unbeknownst to her, advised to soften the prisoners up for interrogation. Add to this she was placed in charge of prisons in Iraq where Abu Ghraib, the worst of them, was frequently under hostile (mostly mortar) fire, overcrowded with decrepit conditions, and receiving little or no logistical or defensive support such as “regular” units would receive. Her assignment was impossible without taking her legitimate concerns above General Sanchez, a matter easier said than done, especially since the war crimes the U.S. was committing had the blessings all the way to the top.Her story was riveting and tragic, similar to Vietnam. The debate over an all volunteer army vis-à -vis a draft is for another story. She was a patriotic and courageous officer deserving of her achievements and undeserving of her ultimate fate of being a scapegoat to a dysfunctional conflict in which she clearly became ensnared in a catch-22.

This book gives General Karpinski's side of the story. It's excellent, and I think it's honest. She says three times at least that she takes responsibility for what she did wrong, and on two occasions lists mistakes she made. Everyone agrees that she did not condone or generate the torture that occurred at Abu Ghraib (otherwise her punishment would have been much more severe than mere demotion) but instead was entirely blindsided by it, in part because of a mixed up chain of command. That is not in dispute; her book merely gives the details, from her point of view. It's one of the best ghost-written biographies I've ever read, about an important current issue and, given that it is a piece of advocacy, frank and complete. Reviewers who say she does not accept her share of the blame have not read the book. For some reason I can't give the book the four stars I meant to. I just tried to edit my review to change the star rating, and failed. I rate it four stars.

This book is a delight to read because even though I don't have a full understanding of how the army works Mrs. Karpinski does a great job of laying it out for me. It's great to read this strong woman's honest, first-hand account of her position in the army. She has an interesting story to tell that if it isn't read, it wouldn't be heard. I think that the scandal that occured at Abu Ghraib is misunderstood because of the select amount of information that has surfaced through media coverage. There is alot more to the story and when searched for, anyone would be shocked about what happened before the incident was leaked to the media and how it was handled afterwards. This book is a really easy read, and an eye opener.

About the Author

Our location in the Wisconsin northwoods helps keep Willow Creek Press off the publishing world's radar. Around here, we're more accustomed to landing walleyes and muskies than big books and authors - events hardly worthy of note in Publisher's Weekly. But, a few years ago we did get noticed with the release of Just Labs, a unique and colorful tribute to Labrador retrievers. The book quickly became a bestseller (now with 500,000 copies in print) and frankly startled us with its success. We were not surprised for long, however, and now an entire line of popular Willow Creek Press titles evokes the myriad joys of dog and cat ownership. Today we are known for high-quality, light-hearted books and the best Just breed calendars in the country.

My son loves the off key random holidays a d he specifically asked for a calendar that had one per day. After searching through several, this was the best pick!

Its been a fun for our family but there are several days we’ve skipped celebrating. it would be nice to have a family version with all kid friendly holidays with a nice mixture of learning opportunities and fun activities.I love that it includes ideas for celebrating.

Perfect for my desk at the office. Since there isn’t any pictures I have attached some. Nice illustrations and very colorful. The stand works really well too. Can’t wait to see what people at work say.
