Right on the edge of Europe, the region has been vulnerable to assault and exploitation. Franks, Vikings, English, Germans have all made their mark, resisted at every turn with resilience. The problematic relationship with neighboring France before and after Union in 1532 has left wounds to this day. The rapacity of the ancien régime was followed by deprivation of privileges during the Revolution, attacks on religion and subsequent suppression of the Breton language which struck at the very heart of Brittany. The nineteenth century combined economic stagnation with growing interest in Celtic roots, fuelling the search for that ultimate chimera?Breton identity. Historians and poets began to assert the distinct character of the region, while foreign travelers also left accounts of a people speaking an unfathomable language and appearing a race apart. This is not a travel guide and doesn't claim to be. It is a well-written cultural history that is filled with stories and the kind of information that you will not find in a travel guide. It is an enjoyable read that will enhance your trip and make you want to see places you never thought of visiting. Stories about the people, the sacred places, the oral cultural, Celtic music, Breton literature, and so much more will contribute to a more meaningful and enriching journey. I highly recommend reading it before you land in Brittany.

I ordered this travel guide on Amazon to help me plan a trip to Brittany. Trying to use the information in the book is a study in frustration. Except for a few details of towns, the book provides only one map: one showing all of Brittany. That map, however, does not show Brittany's departments, whereas the text is organized by departments--so you have to guess where they are. Nor is it easy to find the various towns and sites recommended. The book critically needs a map of each department showing where these places are. I don't recommend this book unless you know the area well, in which case you wouldn't need a travel guide!

I wish the descriptions for the books has a section where the order of the books was listed. I would like to know which books are apart of the series or are standalone especially if new characters are being added that will continue with the main characters at some point. Before this I read the witches and wolves one with just Quin and Toya. I still feel that book was way too short and rushed. Now reading this book I see why certain scenes were rushed but I wished you would have just cut and pasted some scenes from this book to that book to make it make sense. Now that we know who Kya is the end of the witches and wolves book makes sense and I got the fight scene I felt deprived of from witches and wolves. With that said this book had way less grammatical errors than the other books which I found strange since the witches and wolves book was shorter. Anyhow I enjoyed reading the scenes with Khalil and Kya. Since the school they went to was for supernatural kids I am curious about Elaine and if she will make a reappearance. Also am wondering if there is more regarding Kya’s parents as some of the Dialogue used was in present tense. Love the continued growth of Michael and Taria. Curious of how badass Toya will be once she drops the load.

Kya is developing powers she didn’t know she had and is being sucked into a world she didn’t know existed. I love how this latest installment of this series. Taria is still developing powers and I love how her and Nya connect!

I felt like the story was there. Just no real fulfilling information or substance for me to really invest in this book. It felt rushed, half baked and I only finished it because I really have a passion for this type of art and African American paranormal and I really hope you take the criticism for the second half. The characters were developed ok. I wish there was more back ground as far as who Quinn and Toya were. Out the gate we hear about a missing couple but there was no mention as to how they met Taria, their importance to the story line or anything. No back ground on Michael at all nor his relationship with Taria. Kyas parents were never mentioned again nor could I give an honest answer as to why Apu or Amu wanted Kya in the first place. Reading this I felt like I was reading a part two and was missing a lot. I’m also usually not one to harp on grammar but the simple grammatical mistakes made were so annoying to read no one could have possibly reread or at the very least spell checked this. I almost stopped reading because of those alone. If you don’t take pride in your work it won’t be appreciated. I’m not trying to be harsh and I liked the story line. I just feel like this could have been executed 10 times better had you slowed down and filled in some things here and there. I’ve read hundreds of books that i felt were bad or just plain stupid and poorly written and didn’t bother to comment. I feel like your a good story teller and author and I wanted you to see my thoughts so the next story can be great like i know it can be.

There was so much premise to this being a great book, but there was no flow to the story, no back story for the characters. What little there was made no sense. There was barely any emotions when the baby had to be given away as soon as the mother had it.Just a bunch of sentences in a paragraph, sometimes without the necessary punctuation to complete a thought before jumping to another one or an action that just sprung up out of nowhere. I couldn't understand what the heck was going on or why, basically. I'm sorry, I tried. Couldn't read it and I'm an easy reader.

If this is you’re first paranormal book I have to say 100 stars . I read this book straight through . I knew it was going to be good cause I’ve read most of you’re books and you are the top of my favorite 5 Authors. You and Tina j. Can teach some of these authors how to write a book . I really hope there’s more to this story . Keep up the excellent work Melissa

I enjoyed the story line but there was so many typos I had to figure out the way it was supposed to have been wired or read other than that I really enjoyed the story I would like to know what happened to Her parents I would love to see what happens next

Good book if you want to learn the latin bass rhythms. Not for a beginner thought. I am a professional musician with good reading skills and have learned a great deal from using the book. Some of the tempos in the examples are pretty fast and would be difficult for a beginner or even an intermediate player to keep up with. It would be possible for an intermediate player to do but would require some practice.

There are many Latin bass books but start with this one. It has the excellent examples. Excellent instruction. Excellent essays. Excellent CDs.This books starts you off on basic tumbaos and demonstrates them across various chord changes. Then they become more interesting and cross bar lines and change up the rhythms. With the CDs you can listen carefully while following the sheet music and then turn off the bass and play along. Its worth the price for this amount of detail. But there is more!There are nice essays about understanding the Bass with respect to the Clave. There are good annotations about taking basslines and changing their annotated rhythms into something totally different. A great learning exercise.This book also covers Brazilian, Reggae and other musical forms. I bought it for the Afro Cuban chapters and they are most excellent.I highly recommend this book for the newbie to Latin Bass. There is also another book on Amazon that is a good supplement called True Cuban Bass by Carlos del Puerto. Together they make a very powerful combo and this second book is suggested by the Latin Bass book. It isn't exactly a must have but it does supplement nicely this book. Have fun and don't cross the Clave!

Most genres have a book that is THE book, and believe me, this is THE Latin Bass Book!If your a looking to play more latin bass, looking to work on interesting rhythmic patterns, looking for awesome backing tracks, or like me and just looking to study more bass, this book is a must!Thankfully it hasn't been watered down and filled with tabs.That being said, the music is fairly straight forward and is a good book to work on your reading. If your not able to read music, chords are included.We need more quality books like this!

A VERY thorough analysis of almost every latin bass style and technique in existence. Extremely useful as a learning tool or a general resource. The discs are equally useful if you are unfamiliar with the genre. HIGHLY recommend if you ever plan on playing any of the dozens of styles within.

I bought this book a few weeks ago and have really enjoyed working through exercises and beautiful pieces of music.The step-by-step development of the rhythms and variations is excellent and does give you a good understanding of how the bass works in these styles of music. I was a little disappointed that it covers some of the more obscure Argentinian styles of music but not tango which, after all, is one of the most well known of the South American styles of music, but I do know that tango requires more than just a few pages of explanation.Overall though an excellent book, worth every penny.

One of Sher's best. As an academic and composer and l find it a rich source for inspiration and study.

A must have for any serious student of the double bass! This book is a great window into the world of latin music, and a great guide on how to develop legitimate, idiomatic lines. Highly recommend!

The most user-friendly and accessible book about opera I've read so far. Fred Plotkin is impressive not only for his knowledge of opera but for his urbane, positive underlying philosophy: his tolerance, love for the arts and for life in general - the sort of person it would be good to know and to have as a friend. The book begins with some general comments (the most enjoyable is on page 146, the 'essential secret that opera lovers know and those on the outside never suspect'), and then goes on to explore eleven operas in more detail. The point of view is of a genial mentor, guiding newcomers to the opera world through some of the world's most loved operas, using methods that will allow them to grow in confidence and knowledge. I have only one suggestion - the book, published in 1994, needs an update. The advent of Youtube, live streaming and opera in HD has given beginners an economical way to learn about opera. It would be good to have Plotkin's thoughts on how this could be done, and whether he thinks the new technology will threaten or enhance the development of opera in the future.

I love classical music - well most of it written before 1920 anyway. For some reason, I could never get interested in opera, so I thought I'd buy this book and learn how to appreciate opera. Unfortunately, the book is written by someone who knows, understands and loves opera - which makes sense but doesn't give the neophyte the perspective needed to understand WHY he/she should give opera "some room" in your life. I was not able to finish the book because what I read did not make me appreciate opera enough to go further in my reading. Probably my loss. Don't buy this book if you expect it to make a convert out of you.

This is a simple, well-written book, designed for anyone who has ever been interested in opera but never really been able to "get it". Plotkin explains everything you need to know -- the different voices, the history, the basics -- in a way that is entertaining and informative. After listening to opera (with a lot of frustration at what I knew I was missing) for many years, I really heard and enjoyed my first opera, thanks to Plotkin. After reading less than half the book, you will find yourself listening to recordings of great operas and loving them. I have already booked tickets to the next local performances. If you have ever wondered what all the fuss is about opera, read this book. You will be glad you did. It opens a beautiful world that, for me at least, had always been mysterious.

The book offers a clear pathway to, as the title suggests, learning and loving opera. The book is great for anyone just starting to go to operas or someone who enjoys operas and wants a readable description of what makes this art form great.

About the Author

Jessica Lark was always an artist in one medium or another, accepted to Moore College of Art and Design under a young artist’s scholarship at 16 years old. Her flair for artistry culminated into a project to honor her best friend that passed away at 19 with a body painting series, which she painted herself and photographed. While she had always had a love for the nostalgia and immortality that photographs provided, she had never found her way to it from the artistic perspective until she used it to archive the imagery she created on the female form… And the rest as they say, is herstory. Her first sessions were done in her basement next to the oil tank on a backdrop made from a canvas drop cloth bought at home depot and hand painted by her and her sister. She shot on the little green square and charged $25 for the first session, $50 for the second, her first boudoir series, shot in her own bedroom as the set. In 2 and 1/2 years she took her operation from her basement and handmade backdrop sittings at $25 each to an $80,000 a year business, with high end weddings of more than $12000, and opened 2 boutique studio locations with a full staff, now offering her signature intimate portrait collections at $1500-3000. With no experience, training or education, a $2000 start up investment and a lot of determination she built her own little photography empire, while simultaneously juggling a toddler and newborn, no advertising budget, and in the middle of a failing economy.

I liked how the author immerses you in her vision of boudoir. Her wording is very poetic and nothing short of fun to read. Unfortunately, it did little to advance my understanding of posing for boudoir, learning to light a subject for boudoir or to sell boudoir photography to women who aren’t already pursuing a photographer for that purpose. She goes into posing very minimally; offering a small handful of poses that don’t work and then showing small adjustments to make them more successful. The problem is that even though she does make an honest effort to explain WHY some poses don’t work, she doesn’t offer any guidelines to creating your own poses. You’ll be able to use the handful of poses in her book but that’s about it. She also doesn’t really teach anything about setting up lighting. She lightly touched on it but, if you don’t already have a good grasp on lighting your subjects, this book will not help you. Buy this book if you want to hear someone passionately speak about an art form they love. It will also teach about providing an immersive environment for your clients. She does an incredible job for that. Do not buy this book to learn boudoir lighting, posing or selling boudoir as a business.

I really enjoyed this read. The author Has a crystal clear view of composition with regard to the human body. From preparation to posing, from language to lighting, the author brings much to light with regard to the reason she is successful in this art. With the utmost clarity, I fully understand that the art is about the client, not the photograph. Perseverance behind the camera with emphasis on client and atmosphere are paramount. In closing, I was extremely impressed with her recognition of friends and family that have helped her understand along the journey of her profession. Kudos to you all. I have just started studying this art in a dramatic switch from landscape. I hope someday to be able to publish my success to the inspiration of this author and book. Thank you.

This book really nails a lot of the problem areas seen in other litRPG books. It sets good real world stakes for a believable protagonist, sets a good reason for the characters unique class, and good in game set up for side character motivations.The book quickly takes you into the game and sets up the motivation. The pacing in this book is really well done and makes it so you don't want to put it down. In most litRPGs its hard to find a way to convincingly level the main protagonist and the unique class really creates an interesting way to do this.The one issue I had with this book is thats its a bit predictable at points. This happened a few times and didn't detract from the story too much but is worth mentioning. I also really appreciated how the cute girl he meets online keeps their relationship platonic throughtout the book.Overall I would recommend this to anyone who likes the litRPG genre or who is interested in checking it out.

I received an ARC from Portal Books in exchange for an honest review.The pros:Occultist is written in a light, pleasant style, which is entertaining and easy to get through. The characters are relatable and sympathetic, even if they occasionally make choices that make me look at them a little funny.Fight scenes are smooth and progress nicely, and the story has very little that feels like fluff or filler. I especially loved the humor of the scenes, and found the sarcasm very well executed.The other real strength that I found in this book was that, despite being a LitRPG, it balanced the genres well and didn't forego a story for game mechanics. I'm not the sort who really loves heavy, drawn-out sequences of stat boxes, and despite that, the story was able to be coherent and enjoyable for me.The cons:I felt that there were issues in tone with this book, with different sections feeling like they were written for wildly different audiences. I could never quite get my feet under me with that.The world was lovingly created, but at the same time, there wasn't enough support given to its dystopian nature. Characters would behave in ways that seemed very unusual/unreasonable/unrealistic, with the justification just sort of lumped together under the umbrella of "the world is hard", and it didn't feel convincing to me.Fight scenes flowed well, yes, and I found them pleasant enough to read, but they never made me feel like the main character was in danger. He cut his way through enemies with ease, which left the fight scenes feeling distant and disconnected to me.My greatest issue with Occultist was that key moments in the story felt rather contrived. Things would progress reasonably, and then when the plot needed to progress something implausible or impractical would happen, like the main character being afraid to do a google search for his invalid mother for fear of being tracked yet being totally comfortable using her credit card to buy stuff (only realizing his mistake later for dramatic effect). The central concept of the book was the greatest offender of this for me - I didn't find the scenario of the main character winding up stranded in a dungeon and finding a hidden class trainer to be believable/reasonable.Final thoughts:Despite what I've said, I truly did find Occultist an enjoyable read. It wasn't a struggle to get through, and I found myself laughing out loud in places. I think it has its points which can be improved upon, but it's really strong, especially in the LitRPG genre. I would happily read something else by this author, and I wish him the best of luck with this release.

The book as a whole was a very good read with a nice balance of in game action and real world action! There were a few mechanics that didn't seem to work correctly but over all a good read!

Couldn't put it down. Spent 6 hours reading it before I realized what time it was, and then wanted to re-read it. Can't wait for the next book! Perfect amount of LITRPG, no 15 pages of tables every chapter, no harem, just pure entertainment.
