Unfortunately it is more about LASL and NREL's contribution to passive solar than the larger part played by others. It is an answer to the wistful query "what would happen if top scientists were directed to work on passive solar instead of nuclear bombs?"Not Much! Evidently we need to direct ourselves.The investigations are clothed in equations and computer generated graphs yet despite this their useful work has been disregarded by a nation now bent on generating solar electricity. Just put my Kindle down....I hardly know how to start this review. I will never forget this book, nor the strong feelings it engendered inside me. For this reason, it has to be five stars. I hate romances; I never read them, and can barely tolerate a romance tucked inside a thriller or mystery, or time travel science fiction. I must admit, I almost put this down a couple of times during the first 20% or even 30%. In truth, it was so terribly depressing that I argued with myself about whether I should keep reading. Not exactly a description of a five star novel, huh? The problem was that the characters were so well drawn that I almost felt I knew them from another time, another life. I was annoyed that the author just about hit the reader over the head to emphasize the character traits....okay, I get it already! Meredith works herself constantly to keep from feeling anything; Nina runs all over the world to keep from being at home with her own feelings. Any "constant reader" can predict portions of the ending when books start like this. But...but....then I began to realize the depth of the history that I was being taught. The siege of Leningrad....I never thought of it before. Nearly nine hundred days and over one million people dead - more than 700 thousand from starvation - women and children in a world turned upside down. I never realized that this was yet another horror of World War II. I've read the Holocaust stories and thought of the suffering and the losses and bravery of the people of Europe and other countries....but Russia? I'm ashamed to say I knew nothing. This brilliant author had a story to tell and told it in the best context possible - through realistic people whose lives and feelings just about jumped off the pages and into my heart. Thank you, Kristin Hannah, for an amazing read.

This is one of the best books I have had the pleasure of reading. Not only from a storyline point of view, but also from a literary side - the writing is elegant, eloquent and simply a pleasure to feast your eyes and mind on. The descriptive text immediately conjures up the most vivid pictures (I hope this book is never made into a movie as it would destroy the beauty that a well-written book achieves). I am amazed at the way Kristin Hannah is able to jump from one character to the next, seamlessly, and actually get into that character's head so perfectly. It's like she IS those people! I was fascinated by the fact that she had described the Siege of Leningrad so well - I have been to St Petersburg and visited the Siege museum - it's horrific, fascinating and thought-provoking all in one. I have also been to several German and Polish concentration camps and not been as moved (still incredibly moving, I don't want to minimise the effect the latter have as well but differently so). It is hard to imagine what it must have been like for the Russian women in Leningrad under the Reign of Terror that winter; the psychological strain of Stalin's regime, the physical strain of the cold, the war and the famine, and the emotional strain of seeing your loved ones killed or die from starvation, illness and the cold. All these are so well portrayed by the author. In addition, I thought that the way she wove the two stories together through a fairy tale was exquisite - it kept me reading until the end. And the end...so satisfying in every way. This is a book that should be on everyone's MUST READ list!

I loved Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale. So naturally I was excited about Winter Garden. It started off interesting but it just dragged on about the dysfunctional relationship and the characters are so bland. I kept wondering when the mother would tell her story about Leningrad. This was one of those books I had to give up on. It had a good premise, but the execution fell flat. I think it would have worked if we had actually had the mother tell the story sooner rather than waiting further into the book. It seemed as though the author had many plotlines going on with the sisters fighting each other, their mom, Meredith having marital problems, the mothers fairytale/true story.

Kristin Hannah has a tremendous gift in her ability to weave voluminous historical details with relevant relationships in the present. In Winter Garden, she sets out pieces of a puzzle that grows in multiple dimensions with her characters and their individual and intersecting worlds. She truly takes one on a voyage throughout the world, into the past, and back to home. Kristin allows readers to have snippets of insight along the way without revealing next steps on the journey. While this is fiction, one realizes that real people did in fact experience horrible circumstances and yet survived. Growth and healing are key elements that help the reader absorb some of the horrific facts.

I know I'm in the minority but I hated this book. I love the author. Have read other books by her but I found this book depressing, and just plain boring. The story is about 2 sisters who must care for their mother after their father dies. Their mother has a past and the story is told by the mother to the sisters by way of a fairy tale; add to that the lives of the sisters being sprinkled into the plotline, this book was IMHO not even close to the Kristin Hannah books I've read previously.I say skip it read one of her others for example the Nightingale now there was a great book !

This book is pathetic - it repeats the same thing chapter after chapter. After the first 10 times I read how lost and isolated these girls feel (in almost the same words each time); I think I got the point. Hard to go on without Dad - yes, got it. Can't connect in their relationsships, yes, got it. Please tell me something new in the next few chapters or I give up out of boredom with all this repeated angst. I don't often put down a book without completing it; but I am going to make an exception with this one. The writing is juvenile, the characters "thin", the reflections on the human condition repeated ad nauseum. Save your money - i wish i could return this one. I can't fathom how it garnered 4 stars.

This is a fun fashion book based on styles from the Victorian period. The elegant clothes of the period were stylized and had many swirls and layers of fabric. The hats were quite elaborate and contained bows and flowers and other embellishments. The designs in the book give you the opportunity to play with color and dress the ladies of the period as you would prefer.The designs in the book are detailed with lots of background patterns. The details are not intricate and small but they will keep you busy while you color.While you can have access to .PDFs when you purchase this book, my review is based on the book as it is received from Amazon. That way you will know what the pages look like and how they accept color. I like that the publisher provides the digital version as well so you can choose the paper you wish to use and/or to color the pictures as many times as you choose.This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:25 x 2 each fashion designs based on the Victorian Period for a total of 50 coloring pagesDesigns are printed on one side of the pagePaper is typical of CreateSpace: white, thin, slightly rough and non-perforated. The back of the page is printed black.The designs do not merge into the binding. There is a heavy framing line at the outer edges of the design to give the project a more finished look, especially for framing.Glue Binding (there is room to cut the pages out if you choose to do so.)Though you cannot see the bleed-through easily due to the back of the page being printed in black, I recommend the use of a blotter page when working in this book. I use a page of card stock or several sheets of heavyweight paper under my working page. It keeps seeping ink and marring dents from ruining the pages below.Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page quickly.Water-based markers bleed through in spots.Gel pens and India ink pens leave shadows on back of the page. India ink can bleed through if you apply heavily or multiple coats.Coloring Pencils work well with this paper. I found that I could layers the same color for deeper pigment or multiple colors and I could blend easily using a blending stick. I tested both oil and wax based pencils. I also found that hard lead pencils leave dents through the paper.

There's a lot of good things about this book. First, there's two sets of the drawings. Second, the drawings are only on side of the page and the back of each page is black, both things helping to prevent bleed-through. Another good thing is the artwork which looks really nice. Further the drawings are not overly complicated, making coloring them fairly easy. By the way, another good point is that, once you buy the book you can download a .pdf file of the same artwork, giving you backups in case you want to color the same piece of art in a bunch of different ways.

This coloring book scratches all my various itches: love for pretty dresses, the Victorian era, and crippling stress and anxiety. The paper isn't super thick, but my markers don't bleed through. The backside of each sheet is solid black so that helps. There are lots of different pictures and lots of different patterns. It's awesome. Buy it now.

I bought this coloring book a couple of months ago and almost all of the pages have been colored. Each page includes men and/or women in intricately designed fashions that are just wonderful to color. The drawings are beautiful and each page contains intricate fabric designs for the clothes, and a wonderful 'wallpaper' for the background. You can really be creative and have some fun with these. I also have the Edgar Allan Poe coloring book from Jade Summer, and I love that one, too. If you like adult coloring of scenes, and not just shapes and/or flowers, you'll love these!

Enjoyed this but for repeated pages and disproportioned subjects. Also, somewhat repetitive - a succession of standing figures.

Very disappointed Only a handful of pictures all the other pages were duplicates of them poor editing would hv been nice to have more of different poses what was there was pretty nice. Had to laugh- don’t think Victorian ladies had short hair or drank tea out of what looked like ceramic mugs. Take a look

While the history of a restaurant (as opposed to the history of the development of a chef) is not my first interest, there is enough information about how relationships with vendors, wines and cocktails to make the background material interesting even if you wish to concentrate on the recipes. Being a fan of San Francisco upper end tea tasting rooms, I loved the stories of pricey tea. The recipes are all easily executed in a home kitchen and use ingredients that are generally obtainable. Compared to other similar cookbooks, I think this executability is at the cost of authenticity if you think "Vietnamese" but at the strength of honest West Coast cooking.I appreciated the inclusion of common recipes such as Spring Rolls, Cashew Chicken and Green Papaya Salad - nothing spectacular but another view of the flavor profiles. I also appreciated the steamed meat recipes ... we are so used to crisped skin that pale meat genuinely challenges our eyes. My first reaction to the inclusion of many cocktail recipes was "what?" but the section taught me several new details on how to perfect a cocktail. I also appreciated the inclusion of several very simple recipes that can add a nice accent to a meal such as Fried Shishito Peppers. I also appreciated finding new uses for yuba (tofu skin) and sesame rice crackers. In total, several new recipes to try and some potential modifications of old standards makes this a useful cookbook.

Looks good but content doesn't compare to his first book.

Fantastic! Filled with the story of Phan's life and the inception of the restaurant. I lived in San Francisco for several years and loved eating at The Slanted Door. It's nice to now have some of Phan's recipes and understand his philosophy of food.

This is an absolutely phenomenal cookbook. All of the recipes are easy to follow and produce great results. Not only are the recipes great, but the pictures are vibrant and the stories are very well told. Another bonus- it's a gorgeous book! It is so pretty that it makes a lovely addition to the coffee table. This is definitely worth every penny.

I'll definitely enlist the help of a sous chef to tackle some of these fabulous recipes. My first challenge will be the green papaya salad.

This book is filled with recipes from one of my niece's favorite San Francisco restaurants. Beautiful book, awesome recipes.

I am overjoyed that Charles Phan would share his wonderful recipes with everyone. I've made the Jicama & Grapefruit Salad, Papaya Salad and Barbeque Pork Ribs. All were perfect, like eating at the Slated Door. Both salads were fresh and vibrant and made my mouth water. My goal is to try all the recipes at least once.Some of the recipes require sourcing unique items and advanced preparation. I received a Nikon D5600 Camera with two kit lens for my birthday. I purchased this book to help me get familiar with it. I am so glad that I did! Right off the bat, this book proved to be very useful. The manual that came with my camera has such tiny print that it is basically worthless to me. Therefore, this book was a blessing!After reading Chapter 1 - First Steps, First Shots- I noticed that I needed to set up my viewfinder to my eyesight. I had no idea that I needed to do that. It was explained clearly and I felt confident setting up everything even as a newbie. I am not very far into this book as I am a new, budding photographer who still needs the beginner modes. I am wanting to learn how to use the advanced modes with shutter speed, ISO, etc. I know that this book will help me understand and venture out fairly quickly into other advanced and manual modes. I am currently just starting to get to those, but so excited!I hope to have more time to devote to this awesome book soon. so that I can start using all that this camera has to offer. I would definitely recommend this book as of August 13, 2017 for anyone who is new to photography and new to their Nikon D5600 camera. I am not sure how useful this book would be if you already are familiar with Nikon DSLR cameras and using their settings.For the Nikon D5600 Camera and photography newbie this book is definitely the 'manual" to get! Lots of instructions on it's abilities and how to use the settings for best results. It really is like a photography course in a book that is very easy to understand and you can go at your own pace. I would definitely recommend this book and this author. I will look for more of her books in the future!

The Nikon D5600 has so many features. I am thankful for this book to help me explore and discover new things on my camera all the time. Thank you for writing this book so that I could enjoy my camera even more. Pictures are awesome too. I got the kindle version so that I would always have the book on my smart phone and with me. Easy to read. Lots of pictures indicating where things are located.

I already knew my Nikon D80 inside and out having been using it for the past 10 years. The Nikon D5600 has a ton of cool additional features and this D5600 for Dummies was perfect for me (an advanced user very familiar already with Nikon) and would be perfect for a beginner as well. I was very impressed by how much I learned and I was able to go through the entire book in a day and now it is a GREAT reference for when I forget something. This is WAY better than the Nikon user guide and way better than the Lantern guide I purchased separately for my Nikon D80 (they don't make one for the D5600, but even if they did, I'd recommed this guide for dummies.

A very good basic introduction to the Nikon D5600. Helpful descriptions and pictures. In the Kindle edition there are hot links to take you to the illustrations. Getting back to the text, though, you sometimes have to scroll through a number of screens. But the information is good. Nikon D5600 For Dummies (For Dummies (Lifestyle))

Bought it to help out learning my D5600 Nikon. The camera did not come with a manual, you have to DL it from NikonUSA.com. Very large manual to dl too. This boils everything down to easy to understand descriptions and how to. Fast delivery too. Worth the money.

Right out of the box ..... excellent photos. I did however purchase the 35mm 1.8f prime lens in addition to the 2 kit lens. Well worth it as the f1.8 really allows for good phtoto inlow light. Camera is very versitile. Buy D5600 for dummies book. Must read for novice and beginners. Also, an external flash for the hot shoe or off camera is a nice addition (with wireless remote)

I have not finished reading the book yet, but thus far it has been very good. It is written in a very easy going-easy to comprehend manner. I wish it had been included with the purchase of the camera, something Nikon should consider. I am sure I will refer to it often. Anyone with this camera should have this book.

Just what I needed to reintroduce me to photography and teach me to use this camera with so many buttons.
