This story is about the struggles Jenna, an overweight 12 year old girl, faces in school and at home and the changes she makes to overcome them. For such a painful subject, it is presented in an amazingly kind and gentle way. It's written as a series of emails sent back and forth between Jenna and her friends and family. The illustrations are simply wonderful. There is a supportive cast of people in her life that she confides in which helps show what safe relationships are. Her friends include kids around her age (a cool cousin and her best friend Chris) and a couple of concerned adults, her french teacher Mademoiselle Narby and the school counselor Mrs. Gonzalez. There are many great lessons subtly slipped into this book. Some of them are:1. What emotional eating is.2. What emotional triggers are and how to prevent them and cope when you can't.3. A list of tips that can be used to stop overeating.4. How to make an action plan used for goal setting.5. Introduces the concept of healthy food, serving sizes and even provides two simple, kid friendly recipes. This is great for anyone that struggles with emotional eating. No matter what your age!

This book has a unique email format, which makes for an intriguing read. Jenna struggles with her self-image and has realistic difficulties in school that I believe many children can relate to easily, even if they themselves are not overweight. It is a fun book to read, with helpful hints and recipes.Sometimes children need to know that it is o.k. to ask for help. In this book Jenna effectively asks for support from her friends as well as from adults in her school system to sort out her feelings. She pursues many avenues to help boost her self-esteem, while gaining control of her emotions, so she may find a path to healthier eating habits. It is an insightful portrayal of a young girl's emotional roller coaster ride through middle school. This book can open up a great dialogue for adults and children about communication, acceptance, bullying and healthy eating.

The best thing about this book is the format. The way it is presented in emails is very indicative of today's mode of communication. It takes a very serious and growing issue for young girls and Dr. Schechter makes this book very readable and easy for discussion.I highly recommend this book to ALL young girls so those girls who need help can be open to discussion and be proactive. Girls who have friends can be more sensitive to their friends and be more supportive and parents can really use this book as a springboard to talk or take measures to help their kids.My daughter who is in 5th grade really liked this book as well and we had a nice discussion about how important it is to have open communication with parents on everything. As a parent and educator, I would highly recommend this book to everyone.

I am more of a fan of KO's political career, and only have half-hearted knowledge of The World Of Sports(Not to worry, I still enjoy a Dick Trickle joke!) I'm still glad my friend recommended this book. Keith and Dan's humor, passion, and the way they must have worked together really does translate on the page. I can see why Aaron Sorkin was inspired by them. I think there must be at least a chuckle on every page...

Disappointed, I thought there would be more inside stories about ESPN, and not about personal stories about the authors.

Well, maybe that's stretching it a bit, but I just stumbled across this tome by Messers. Patrick and Olbermann, and I have to say it is a great read for any sports and ESPN buff. Plus, the naked pics of Dan are to die for (just kidding). This book came out some seven years ago, when Olbermann was still allowed on the grounds at Bristol, but it resonates today because a lot of it holds true. Forget the somewhat dated references to the Macarena, and you'll enjoy it for what it is: two co-workers locked in deadly combat over whether the 1899 Cleveland Spiders deserve mention or not.Patrick and Olbermann were the anchor for the good times at Sports Center, and they write with absolute candor about their time in bottom-feeding jobs across the country before they fulfilled their destinies as the premier wiseasses for a generation. The "how-to" chapter on becoming a potential sportscastor is rather intimidating, but they offer helpful hints on how to get started (and to have a back-up plan in case it doesn't work out). But the real meat of the book is the estimation of atheletes over time. Olbermann and Patrick know their sports, and it shows in the lists they compile of "the greatest". Note to the fainthearted: Olbermann's arcane knowledge of nineteenth century baseball is mind-boggling, you may want to take a quick walk outside after poring over the lists.Patrick and Olbermann may no longer be a team, but their book is a great relic of that time when Sports Center truely was "The Big Show". Pick it up today, and you'll never put it down.

This book was a great and easy read. The only flaw is the lack of humor that the show it's about is so famous for. I especially enjoyed the chapter that focused on how to become a sports broadcaster. Before I read it I had no idea the work you had to put in to become what these two men have become. It definitely made me think twice about what I wanted to do with my life and how I was going to do it. Some of this book is funny, some parts are poignant, but most of it is just biographical. If you enjoy these two men, the show, or are interested in becoming a sports broadcaster read this book.

I bought this book when it first came out in the summer of 1997 (which is when Keith left ESPN) and it is a wonderful reminder of how things used to be. Keith is now stuck at MSNBC, where he recounts the day's "developments" in the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, and this book takes the reader back to a time when Keith seemed happier, always had a joke, and left the viewer with a smile. Sentiment aside, "The Big Show" is an intriguing look at how "Sportscenter" was put together, the blunders and disasters that seemed to threaten the show (and the hosts' collective sanity), and the world in sports in general. Keith and Dan also talk about serious issues in sports, such as racism and athlete salaries, in the midst of all the book's zaniness. I would definitely recommend this book, to sports fans in general, as well as die-hard fans of Keith. I hope that one day Keith will release another book, and that he is able to find some humor in his new job as a political commentator.

I just saw a Sport Center segment and I pulled this book out. This was the start of something special. All the sportcasters with irreverent comments and phrases...it began in earnest with these two. This was the golden era of Sport Center...Great insight and I love the phrases. It does read like the stories that those two used to do. The Big Show...Sunday Nights......And surprisingly, it ended with grace...remembering Tom Meese. If you are a fan in any way, shape or form of Sports Center, get this book!

I love sports and I love Keith Olbermann, so a book about sports and ESPN written by Keith Olbermann was a triple threat! It's an insider's look at the birth and childhood of ESPN with lots of rye wit from Keith. It's a great read when you just want to relax and have a few laughs.

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. I first bought it back in the mid 90s, and I still pull it out at least once a year if not more to read it again and again. It has everything: It's extremely funny and very informative. I learn something new each time I read it. Olbermann is a baseball genius, his chapter on the 100 players not in the Hall of Fame is amazing. And the arguing between him and Patrick is hilarious. It helps if you are a sports fan, but even if you're not, you will enjoy this book. Great stories, great insight, great humor, great information. What else can you ask for?

Review

''Scintillating . . . There's an enormous amount of scholarship here, yet the story never drags, so adroitly does [Wasson] blend his material into a fluent narrative around evocative scenes where character emerges novelistically.'' --Publishers Weekly (starred review) ''Deep inside this comprehensive study, Sam Wasson uses a phrase to describe the movie Cabaret: 'the bejeweling of horror.' Bob Fosse's whole life was something like that, a man who created magnificent, bejeweled art at personal cost. It's an American story, powerfully told.'' --Paul Hendrickson, author of Hemingway's Boat: Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost ''I tore through this masterful biography, loving it from beginning to end. Wasson writes with a verve ideally tuned to his subject, sparkling with wit and fresh insight. . . . This is a life lived large and dangerously amid cultural currents that propelled and inspired Fosse as a dancer, choreographer, and director. In Fosse, Sam Wasson energetically and authoritatively brings it all into sharp focus, with uncanny depth and perception.'' --Sally Bedell Smith, author of Elizabeth the Queen''Hard work is evident in the intricate depiction of a complicated, brilliant man...A thoroughly researched and fascinating look at Fosse, viewed through the relationships and work that defined him. Highly recommended for theater or movie aficionados, aspiring performers, and fans of engrossing biography.'' --Library Journal (starred review)''Here's something you can't say about many celebrity biographies: at nearly 750 pages, it feels like it ends too soon. Wasson is such a lively, engaging writer that, as he takes us through the life and career of the multi-award-winning choreographer and director Bob Fosse, we scarcely notice we're turning the pages -- until there are no more to turn . . . Combining keen analysis of Fosse's stage and screen works with a compassionate look at Fosse's often-tumultuous personal life, the book is everything you could want in a celebrity bio, without any of the gossipy, trashy, third-hand rumory rubbish that makes too many biographies so painful to read. This one's a pure joy to read, cover to cover; you read it not merely for Fosse's story but also for Wasson's inventive way of telling it. If this book doesn't turn up on some literary-awards lists, it'll be a serious crime.'' --Booklist (starred review)''The lushly researched life of celebrated dancer, choreographer, and director (stage, films, TV) Bob Fosse. Film critic and biographer Wasson has amassed a mountain of data about Fosse but has sculpted it into something moving and memorable . . . . Graceful prose creates a richly detailed and poignant portrait.'' --Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

This is possibly the best book about American Musical Theater I have ever read. Sam Wasson manages to pull off a literary pas de deux writing exactly like Bob Fosse danced and choreographed. Reading this book is like watching a Fosse show. Wassen slides, glides and shuffles through this story of a tortured and talented man. From the curious detachment of his parents while he endured sexual abuse as a young man to the utter disregard for his various heath issues Fosse changed American musical Theater and danced it into the 20th century. Somehow he partnered with his demons to create brilliant theater. His relationship with Gwen Verdun is the stuff of theatrical legend. She was his lover, wife, muse and friend who understood him in spite of him.In addition to finding Fosse's life fascinating, I was awed by Sam Wasson's writing. His sentence crafting employs the same genius and quirky energy that Bob Fosse's dances did. Somehow he manages to tell the story, warts and all, without resorting to tawdry tales that usually inform these biographies. And Bob Fosse definitely had some tawdry! If you love and miss the Golden age of American Musical theater read this book .

A wonderfully researched and compelling biography of an incredibly complex showman. Bob Fosse revolutionized modern musical theater and was the perfect example of the bright light who burned too hot. This biography effectively goes into Fosse's head and fully reveals why he was such a perfectionist, control freak and self destructive madman. His friendship with Paddy Chayefsky was absolutely fascinating as was his relationships with all the NY showbiz Illuminati, some who were friends and many who were competitors. The author does an excellent job centering the story around Fosse's death with each chapter counting down the years toward his final embrace with Angelique, his angel of death.A bonus is great insight into the lives of the main women in his life (other than his mother) Gwen Verdon, Anne Reinking and of course, the intensely influential burlesque strippers of his showbiz youth.Great, highly readable biography. Highly recommended

This is the best biography I have ever read. The subject, Bob Fosse, is covered completely and objectively. The research is exhaustive and presented in quotes of persons giving information and not by annotation. Facts are substantiated in an appendix. The writing is so good I thought I was reading a novel. Even though the ending is known and permanent I kept hoping Fosse could be cured of his various multiple addictions. A must Book for Fosse, American musical, theater and show biz fans.

A Great read about a seminal figure in the popular cultue of the 20th Century --- a brilliant but completely neurotic ego-maniac with no impulse control. But what a brilliant dancer, choreographer, director, film-maker & bon-vivant whose personal demons were responsible for his early death. It helped me understand my own personal obsessions as a visual artist, and the book's melancholy tale of the theatre world stays with me even now.Alas, he considered himself a complete fraud and an artistic failure, even when he became a legend of Theatre, Dance & Film.

This seemed to be a "definitive" biography of Mr. Fosse. It was brilliantly written, providing insight and information that came from an exhaustive interview process with many of the key players in his life. I really felt like the author succeeded in painting an accurate portrayal of a difficult, neurotic, enraging, brilliant, unique man ... in a way that still made you feel protective toward him. A great feat. I don't usually review books, but felt compelled to do so if it results in even one more person reading this. Enjoy!

Detailed narrative on Fosse's incredible rise and eventual set-backs. An inside look at insecurities, bad habits, destructive behavior, love affairs, perfectionism and genius. Especially interesting - inside info. on musicals and films. Overall, an in-depth view of a complex workaholic who was never satisfied and couldn't enjoy his success. Author did his homework.

There have been other books about Fosse but this is one that really defines him and his life in the theater. It's about 800 pages long and pretty well profiles an era of musical comedies during two decades---at least those that were impacted by Bob Fosse. I lived through that period of the 60's and 70's: a period with shows by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Kander and Ebb and a host of other creative geniuses. Fosse came from a difficult childhood spent in vaudeville and burlesque, areas that impacted him enough to create an obsessive choreographer and then director who could only accept perfection in his dancers and actors. Mr. Wasson explores and linearly goes through the creative efforts of Fosse and his impact on producers, writers and composers. Equally vivid is his sexual demands made on quite a few cast members. His marriage to Gwen Verdon and his creation of choreography for her over the years made her into a star. A complicated genius with terrific drive and a short life.

An excellent book for fans of Fosse, yes, but also for a chance to look inside the life and mind of a man who had a huge influence on stage and film that is still viable today. Learning about Fosse's relationships with family, friends, wives, lovers and his dancers is enlightening every step of the way.I think Fosse was a genius and the book gives excellent and intimate insight into how he got there. If you get a chance, check out youtube for video clips of Fosse dancing in his earlier career and then watch clips from dance numbers he choreographed for movies and Broadway. Wow!An added bonus is a look at the history of vaudeville, Broadway and films and how they all evolved and are intertwined. The size of the book should not deter you at all. Every page is like Fosse, going from deep despair to over the top "razzle dazzle"! Show Biz at it's best and worst. Highly, highly recommend!
