I now live in Colorado and I am just getting back into fly fishing.So for me it is a great reference book to have all the patterns for Colorado in one book.I've googled some of these to get more details to make them myself.Also there is a ton of information on how to fish different patterns in great spots throughout the state.
My Dad has his flies published in this book so it's a great memory for me.
Great set of flies and the book has contact info on the best guides for each major river system in CO
For starters, I've absolutely enjoyed Pat Dorsey's other books, and while I have not completely finished reading Colorado Guide Flies, I find it also to be a very good book. However, Mr. Dorsey dropped the ball in one area. The text is well written, and it he talks at length about certain fly patterns, their origin, history, evolution, where and when they are effective, how they are best fished. Great information! Where Mr. Dorsey failed to make a very good book a great one, is where not all patterns discussed in length in the text were included in the extensive pattern listing near the end of each chapter. The best example of this I've discovered so far, is the at length discussion of a Mike Mercer pattern called the Trigger Nymph, in the chapter on Mayflies. The Trigger Nymph is not included in the pattern listing at the end of the chapter. Why go to great lengths to discuss a pattern and then not include it in the pattern listing? This is a pattern book after all, so I do not think this oversight should go unnoticed. To be fair, despite my disappointment in this one area, I'm enjoying the book a great deal and would buy it again. I would also most likely purchase any of Mr. Dorsey's future books.

One of the very best books on fly fishing in Colorado. Tells you what type of flies to get for what water. It gives you the NAME of the fly so it eliminates guesswork. And it gives you photographs of the fly, further eliminating guesswork. Of all the books on fly fishing I have (10-12)...this is the best. I tie a few flies...but that is all. When I'm pressed for time and would rather fish...than tie...I will use the suggestions in this book.
