It's funny how this book got under my skin. When I began it I really had no idea what it was going to be about, (I only like to read the reviews that tell how they felt about the book-no spoilers for me;), and as I read the first few pages I was actually wondering if this was going to be a book I'd even want to finish...oh my land! Was I ever more wrong! This story makes you get involved. Even now as I sit writing this, I'm smiling and thinking about the main character. I can hear her talking and I feel her-her emotion, her pains, her living. I absolutely grew to love this book. I became so involved in it that I couldn't wait to see what would happen next or where it would go but it was a great ride. Nothing was expected, the author keeps the story line fresh and individual and yet, there are some age old truths being told too. This book will make you take out your own soul and 're-examine it to see if you measure up. You just can't help but be moved and inspired by this book.I enjoyed this story so much that as soon as I finish writing this review I'm going to see what else I can find to read by this author and its 2 o'clock in the morning but I just have to see if I can at least start a new book written by Elizabeth Musser. I don't often give 5 stars because I feel a book has to be above and beyond, really special and it has to say something. Well, this book certainly deserves its 5 stars! I not only HIGHLY recommend this book, I'm warning you that this is a read you don't want to miss. This is why we read. :)HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! :D

I enjoyed this author's book, The Swan House, very much & am recommending it to my 16 year old granddaughter, also a sophomore in high school. This story relays many sadnesses as well as joys, self-doubts and insecurities with a plethora of questions all in a recent historical setting in Atlanta, GA. I appreciated the Christian aspect of this book and the way it will encourage readers of all walks of life. Depression and life-long mental suffering is woven into the story and how one affluent family dealt with these issues. This is a story of a real incident that happened in 1962 with a deadly plane crash and great loss of life, lives that effected Atlanta GA families as none other ever has and how one wealthy family and their friends handled and recovered from their tragic losses. It also covers a time when there was much racial strife and the beginnings of desegregation. It will touch your heart and stir your soul.

I would have given this 5 stars except for a couple of issues. In places the story seemed to drag a bit. There were parts of the story with way too much detail that had nothing to add to the plot or the telling of the story, such as the detailed time the girls spent horse back riding and jumping. It went on so long I was certain it was leading up to something such as an accident or something important, but it ended up being a long dead end of boring details about riding around in circles and jumping. There was not enough reason for it to be included in such detail. it could have been summed up in a few sentences. The second issue is small but bothered me because it was inaccurate. Mary Swan mentioned that one of the boys in Carl's band reminded her of Fat Albert a character she and her parents had listened to on a record by Bill Cosby. I didn't think that sounded right, Bill Cosby would have been 25 in 1962 and I didn't think Fat Albert was around when he was that young. I searched and Bill Cosby actually had some Fat Albert records that pre dated the TV show but not nearly that early unless the author found more information than I could after searching quite a bit. I then began to be concerned about other historical references but nothing else seemed to be dated as wrong as the Fat Albert issue. I am a few years younger than than Mary Swan would have been in 1962 but close in age and I found the story very interesting. I think it is because I grew up in the north in a small town with absolutely no black people and the only Jewish people I knew were my DOctor and Dentist who lived n our town and were well thought of, so I didn't have any conception of the civil unrest going on in the country at the time since it was never an issue where I lived. The story gave me a lot of perspective of the issues in larger towns in the south. I also would have liked a little more clarification on who Mary Swan ended up marrying, it was not clear to me.

This book really touched my heart. I moved to the South in 1958 from California. What a culture shock as my husband and I drove through parts of Georgia. We saw "white only" signs on bathroom doors at gas stations! I grew up in a family that taught us that everyone was equal in the eyes of God. I loved the statement in the book: "The ground is level at the foot of the cross." God is no respector of persons. I remember one of the first songs I learned in Sunday School was: "Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world." This book is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. Read it and be blessed.

I'm not done reading this book. It is the second book I bought by this author. I like her writing style very much. When I finished the first book I wanted to keep reading. Elizabeth Musser is an excellent story teller. I am looking forward to collecting her books and sharing them with friends and family. She is very clear in what she wants to present and her descriptive language is excellent.

Mythology, by Edith Hamilton

Review

"Edith Hamilton retells the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths with a sure taste and scholarship that help to restore their quality as perennial and refreshing fables about human nature, including our own."―The New Yorker"No one in modern times has shown us more vividly than Edith Hamilton 'the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome.' Filtering the golden essence from the mass of classical literature, she proved how applicable to our daily lives are the humor and wisdom of more than 2,000 years ago."―New York Times

Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY, originally published in 1942, is one of two classic mythological summaries most readily available to us today. The other (and older of the two) is by Thomas Bulfinch; it was published in the early 19th century and is commonly called BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY (a merger of three works originally published separately as THE AGE OF FABLE, THE AGE OF CHIVALRY, and LEGENDS OF CHARLEMAGNE). Both authors present a summary overview of myths once widely taught but now generally neglected. Bulfinch is much more extensive and includes numerous legends not covered by Hamilton, but the coverage by both of the Greek and Roman myths (for which the two authors are most famous) makes for particularly interesting comparison. Some prefer Hamilton's treatment; others prefer Bulfinch's. I personally prefer Hamilton's consistent use of distinct Greek and Roman names rather than Bulfinch's frequent and occasionally confusing use of Roman names to identify Greek entities. But I generally enjoy Bulfinch's slightly old-fashioned style of storytelling over Hamilton's (though, all things considered, hers is quite fine). Hamilton's work is still under copyright, and it is published only by Little, Brown. Thus, it is more expensive than Bulfinch's which, being in the public domain, is easily obtainable online for free or in very inexpensive editions by numerous ebook publishers. Those who may own older paperback or hardcovered editions of Hamilton's work will discover the 2012 ebook replaces the magnificent artwork of Steele Savage with somewhat less majestic illustrations by Chris Wormell (though the list of illustration topics remains the same). The text remains unaltered, and the formatting is exquisite. There is an active TOC (here at the very end), but (disappointingly) no index in the ebook version. Overall, it is a very handsome ebook and a delight to read.It is hard to imagine retelling the great myths in a manner more concisely informative than rendered here by Hamilton. Critical reviewers who claim she is too difficult or too dry are certainly entitled to their opinions, but given the nature of the material and the purpose of this book, I would respectfully disagree with them. There is, of course, no substitute for reading the full-length originals from which these great tales have been culled and summarized, but this is by far a much more convenient way to initially encounter them; that is why this book has been (or, at least, once was) heavily used in public schools in conjunction with teaching these timeless stories.Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY belongs in the personal library of every literate person as an introduction to, summary of, and/or reminder of these Greek, Roman, and Norse myths. But for added insights and additional myths, I would encourage readers of it to also obtain and read BULFINCH'S MYTHOLOGY.

I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't discover Edith Hamilton sooner. I loved every moment of this book. It focuses mainly on Greek mythology, although there is a brief section on Norse mythology at the end. I appreciate that she lists her sources for each story at the beginning of the chapter and her telling of the these myths are easily read, but not over simplified and the result is highly enjoyable.

In grammar school I studied Greek mythology, and was mesmerized by the Odyssey and the Iliad. Soon other subjects came along that stole my attention. Fast-forward fifty years and I found myself curious to see if my old fascination and excitement about Greek mythology could be rekindled, and I once again I started slowly and tucked into Edith Hamilton's Mythology. I found this book to be as alive and vibrant as I remembered, but I'm thrilled to say that as an adult I appreciate it even more. It's mind-boggling that having been published in 1942, this is still one of the best interpretations around. One thing I hadn't remembered is that Ms. Hamilton's Mythology includes sections on Roman and Norse stories; I had no interest in them when I was younger and only middling interest in them now, but they're a happy find. This book stokes the imagination and invites further study of the subject. I bought the Kindle ebook and Kindle audiobook versions; both are outstanding. I wish I could give this more than 5 stars!

This 75th Anniversary Edition does not disappoint. My introduction to mythology happened more than 50 years ago when my librarian Aunt Louise gave me The Golden Treasury of Myths and Legends by Anne Terry White and Alice and Martin Provensen (a classic itself). I moved on to an early 60s edition of Edith Hamilton's Mythology, entranced with the family trees of the gods and using her description of the Underworld to make a model when I took Latin. Also became a fan of the D'Aulaires' mythology books. My interest and background in mythology have served me well as an English major, grad student, parent, school librarian, and lifelong heavy reader. Now retired, I'm taking a class at our Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at North Carolina State University on mythology. I decided I needed to upgrade my old favorite. The 75th Anniversary edition is beautifully designed, a pleasure to read and hold. Illustrations include plates, page drawings, design motifs, and borders. Anyone with a longstanding or brand-new interest in Greek mythology will be dazzled. Highly recommended.

Classic text that was required reading in High School. Loved it then, but sadly I plastered my paperback with the names of girls I was dating at the time. The Kindle version is perfect - different illustrations than the book (I also have the hardcover) but just as good. Hamilton's prose style is borderline "quaint" but adds a nice personal touch. The lack of commas in places may require a couple reads of some sentences. Even so I highly recommend Mythology as it covers both Greek, Roman, along with teaser Norse mythology.

I have always loved Greek and Roman mythology, and have bought so many different books over the years trying to find a comprehensive, easy to read, well formatted version of the myths. This is by far the best collection that I have found yet. All previous collections have left me feeling disappointed. This is not a strict translation of the myths, but is a retelling of them in easy to read modern language. This collection is easy to read, covers all of the majors Greek and Roman myths, and is very logically laid out. I highly recommend.

Marilyn McFarlane’s collection of short stories from the major world religions is nothing short of charming. She’s collected “sacred wisdom” from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth traditions (which includes Wiccan) and reveals it through delightful stories of pilgrimages, odysseys, family struggles, battles against evil, and, inevitably, lessons learned. Used with parental or teacher guidance, the 35 stories are equally appropriate for children. Sacred Stories offers a truly entertaining way to learn about the world's religions, and illustrates the differences and similarities among them. A highly enjoyable read!

This is a really cool, age appropriate, and educational book. Excellent resource for teachers, students, or parents who wish to teach or learn about the subject.

It was a gift, but I know many of these stories. They seem to be enjoying the book.

Great read! Shares other's stories and shows how we are similar more so than different.

It's a little bit of a snooze fest. I still read the whole thing but it was a long read if ya catch my drift.

Very simple to understand and easy to read, seemingly geared especially towards beginners and in a way that is well understood. I'm very pleased with this buy. Not a huge book, but the 170 pages are filled with good information. I got it b/c I'm wanting to teach my young children that there is more to the world we live in than just what is taught for the most part in small town, USA where we live. I want them to be open minded and to accept what others believe to be their truth. This book I think will come in very handy when the time comes to teach them about different religions, for they a little too young at the moment, but I went ahead and purchased it now b/c I too was wanting to learn a little bit more. It doesn't get too into detail to the point of losing the reader in over-description, but describes just enough to get a basic understanding of each belief system. I like the religions the author chose to include in this book; Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Native American, and Sacred Earth. Although the world doesn't end with just these religions, it is good basic overview and the major beliefs.

This book is a wonderful way to introduce children to different belief systems. With tales from all the major religions of the world, while managing to keep them at a child's level and to treat each religion with respect. These are not just randomly selected stories, but were chosen to reflect important aspects of each religions teachings. These tales also help to demonstrate the commonality in each culture. With tales from Buddhism to Sacred Earth, Marilyn has done a wonderful job both in the introductions to explain the most important tenets of each religion and in the selection of the stories reflect these teachings. As a folklorist I would be willing to use this book as part of my curriculum for the children's classes and would as a painless introduction for adults.

This book is a staple in our home and has been since I was a little girl. I remember sitting on my mom's and nana's laps with them reading this book to me and I'm thrilled to be able to pass on these experiences to my kids as well. The stories are thrilling and captivating and the illustrations are beautiful. This book means a lot to my family and our family time.

I read this book as part of my ongoing research into the assassination of President Kennedy. In my opinion the conflict in Vietnam is one of the keys to unraveling this greatest of mysteries if it can even still be called a mystery today. The conspiracy theory is President Kennedy was going to end America's involvement in Vietnam once he was re-elected in 1964. And that was something the Military Industrial Complex was never going to allow to happen. The great Fletcher Prouty worked with Allen Dulles at the CIA up until the time JFK got killed. Fletcher felt there never was any real military objective in Vietnam. The goal was to create a bottomless money pit of military spending. So the CIA was doing things in Vietnam to prolong the conflict for as long as possible even if this meant getting American military personnel killed.Author and historian John M. Newman has shown how the CIA and American military intelligence were telling President Kennedy and Secretary Of Defense Robert McNamara all lies about the true state of affairs in Vietnam. But they were telling then Vice President Lyndon Johnson the truth about what a quagmire Vietnam had become and would most likely always be. So Johnson knew what was going to happen in Vietnam even before he became president.Fletcher Prouty and also James W. Douglass in his book JFK And The Unspeakable tell how the CIA had infiltrated every aspect of the power structures in Washington, DC. The CIA had their spies collecting information from all the government agencies and telling lies to everyone in the government also.I don't really see a lot in this massive book about the Pentagon Papers to make me doubt those conspiracy theories. The book says JFK continued America's involvement in Vietnam. But the fact remains that when JFK was alive and in office the number of American military personnel in Vietnam was around 16,000. And according to an official government document called NSAM 263 JFK had ordered that all American personnel should leave Vietnam in the near future. Then within a few days after JFK got killed Lyndon Johnson issued NSAM 273 which seems to be a vaguely worded document about the future policy and plans for Vietnam which could be interpreted in many different ways. It's creepy because people say Lyndon started working on the draft for NSAM 273 when President Kennedy was still alive. This book also confirms that there didn't seem to be any real military objectives in Vietnam. The stated objective was to just keep escalating the destruction against the enemy until they got discouraged. But as I said if the conspiracy theories are true the CIA knew all along that this would never happen.

Amazing to read this today, and to still see so many parallels to Iraq and Afghanistan...and possibly North Korea. So much learned, but some much that still remains hidden from the public about the behind the scenes about Vietnam.

This is one of the very best books I've read on the politics surrounding the reasoning behind the decisions made about the start of the Vietnam war. There is no doubt in my mind if JFK had lived, this war would never have taken place. JFK's second thoughts about the direction the war was taking, was one of the reasons Lyndon Johnson and certain organizations within and outside of our Gov't had him assassinated. This opinion coming from a Vietnam combat vet myself and a Vietnam war "hawk"at the time. We were all used by the "military industrial complex"-----just like Eisenhower warned the nation about just before he left office.

Valuable historical documents are available in this book for reviewing how the major events during the Vietnam war transpired. It is more beneficial when this book is read in conjunction with other Vietnam-war-era books for complete comprehensions.

Amazing and one of the best 'what if's' of history. Example of how things can go badly when Govts keep the governed in the dark about policies that harm so many lives. Reading about the meetings makes one wish to call out, wait do not do that, you are swallowing a fishhook.

"The Pentagon Papers" is at once sad, frightening in its detail, and astonishing as the reader witnesses the tragic, misguided decisions made by politicians and military leaders which ended up in the deaths of nearly 60,000 American men and women fighting a non-winnable war.

Having lived thru the war, it is amazing now to have a book with all the years of FUBAR.

Every now and then in my classes, a student(s) will really get 'into' the Vietnam War. I like to give a copy to those who will really value it. My original purchase came when it was first printed...and I won't give that one up. Since then I keep buying and giving. The lessons from this book are many. The Iran Contra Affair is another important 'read'.

#103,424 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Many thanks to NetGalley, F & W Media, and Kerry Bogert for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are 100% my own and independent of receiving an advance copy.Coffeehouse knits blends together two of my favourite things - coffee and knitting. Apparently I’m not the only one! Enough knitters love their brews whether it is tea or coffee, so much so, that they have dedicated a whole book to the idea. More often than not when we knit we usually have a hot drink sitting beside us. The meditative quality of knitting lends itself to sipping something while you do it. Another popular activity of late is these “Stitch & Bitch” nights where knitters will meet up, usually at a coffeehouse and spend a few hours with like minded people knitting and sharing. It is a place where you can show off what you are working on, get advice if you are stuck and talk about whatever is going on in your life. It is usually a drop in type group and new members are welcome with open arms. This book is beautiful. Not only do they have delicious names like “House Blend Cardigan” and “Breakfast Brioche Shawl”, the yarns used are yummy. Some of the patterns designs echo things like the swirl in the foam of of a frothy cappuccino or the speckles pattern that remain in your cup from tea leaves. I am in love with so many of the patterns and find them stylish and wearable. There is a range of difficulty so whether you are a new knitter or an experienced one, you will find enough to keep you interested. There is a small index of special techniques that are explained. What makes this unique is that interspersed between the patterns are a selection of essays that muse of the experience of knitting. From knitting groups, to spending a night at home curled up the “how” of how we experience knitting is as important as the what of what we are knitting.I can hardly wait until this book is out, in my hands, and I am knitting one of the patterns!

Truth be told, I can do without the cutesy "coffeehouse" theme and will probably never read the included essays. But there's such a nice selection of patterns here! They're all rendered in shades of brown and cream to match with the coffeehouse theme, but okay. And although the theme and the essays are not for me, they pull this together into a nice book.... I think constraints can help inspire artistic work and that the patterns here are interesting. This would be a nice gift for a knitter (and of course, especially for one who hangs out in coffeehouses). The book has lots of lovely full-color pictures of the knitted garments. In most cases, these do a good job of illustrating the final product, but sometimes artful photography seems to have won out over illustrating the garment. This seems especially true for me for the "marshmallow tee" on page 44, which has a twist in the front; there's just not a good picture of how this is going to look on a person.(Note: I thought the picture on the cover was fingerless gloves and went looking for that pattern. But that turns out to be a sweater.)I am an advanced beginner or intermediate knitter. I've been knitting for only a couple years, but done many other needlework things over the years and seem to "get" knitting. So I don't really know where I belong on the spectrum. I have done colorwork (doubleknit, mosaic, and brioche), entrelac, and easy-ish lacework, mostly to the end of hats and cowls, but with some larger things like blankets and sweaters as well.Because most of the items in this book make good use of interesting textures, I don't think beginners will find patterns suited to them in this book, though they will perhaps be inspired to learn more to get to the point where they could. (Actually, the marshmallow tee is just two rectangles, so aside from the mechanics of stitching it together, it's probably a fine beginner project.)I don't tend to follow knitting patterns to the letter, but use them like I would a cookbook and often follow the general plan with some modifications. That's how I expect to use this book. But there's is an awful lot to draw from here, so I expect to refer to it multiple times for inspiration.

This beautifully illustrated knitting book celebrates knitters in community, especially if that community takes place in a coffeehouse! Essays about what it is like to knit with others are interspersed every three or four patterns. The patterns themselves are a variety of scarves, shawls, hats, sweaters, cowls and more that are just a shade off classic. So if you're looking for classic projects with just a little something different, you'll probably enjoy the patterns in this book. The designs are mostly for intermediate to advanced for the sweaters, while the other patterns range from beginner to intermediate level. They are all for the most part quite lovely, and I think I'm going to be digging out some yarn to work on a few cowls. My only complaint about the book is a typical complaint about contemporary crafting books and magazines. For me, I like to see very clear photographs that show the unique stitches used the pattern as well as the general, overall look of the piece. I don't need to see models in the distance sitting on their bed with her knitted socks on or sitting in a cafe table with their cowls. Give me something up close photos so I can really get a sense what the knitted fabric, and ultimately the garment, looks like. Also, as this is based around the coffeehouse knitting community, a lot of the colors used in the projects are the various colors of coffee. So some of the pictures themselves as well as some of the yarn choices are dark. These aspects sometimes make it difficult to see the detail of the garment itself. I would have liked to have seen variety in color, well, because color is part of what makes knitting interesting. These patterns are mostly in browns or greys.Other than that, this is a lovely collection of near-classic knitwear that would be an asset to most knitters' libraries.

The reading is compelling, instructional, and practical. I couldn’t put Digital Minimalism down, and ended up "consuming” it in only 4 sits. Because of that, I feel compelled to share a review with you before you make any commitment.I’ll divide this review into 2 parts. First I will share the reasons why I chose to read the book and some personal takeaways. The second part is a summary of the book with a few short excerpts I highlighted while taking notes.PERSONAL THOUGHTSI probably pre-ordered the present book because I’ve been intrigued by how the overused of new technologies [specially social networks] have influenced our societies during the last 10 years. This latest wave is actually recent, and being in my early 30s I still remember clearly how life was during high school and early days in college before this explosion. We all acknowledge the wonders of technology, how the development of new tools has helped the prosperity of our societies in many dimensions. However, the other side of the coin is equally important—consequences that deserve to be understood and evaluated. Besides the social, emotional and psychological aspects, which are the main focus in Digital Minimalism, I do also care about the impacts on our physical health caused by technology overexposure. Not only how the devices shape our physical posture for worst over the years but also the detrimental effects of electromagnetic fields to our overall health. That said, I’ve been trying to be mindful about digital/technology use during the last 4-5 years. I still have some social network accounts, but I feel quite odd among my peers because I’ve been checking these accounts less often than ever—about once a month—but I rarely post pictures or comments. It brings a deep feeling of freedom and calmness. In terms of internet usage, I keep my phone on airplane mode for around 80% of the awake time [sometimes for the entire day], and I often try to go on adventures up in the mountains to be away from signal access for days or weeks at a time. This desire to be unreachable has grown over time and, although it makes me feel grounded and present, I admit that can be quite selfish of me towards loved ones.Reading this book helped me better understand the forces behind addictive technologies, exposed me to pragmatic ideas to implement the minimalism philosophy, and supported my previous thoughts on how we can better handle digital overexposure. I can’t recommend this book enough.SUMMARY[Intro] Digital minimalism, according to Cal Newport, is a philosophy where we focus our online time on a small number of carefully selected and optimized activities that support the things we value. We learn how the author got interested in the topic after receiving feedbacks from his previous book.[Chapter 1] Cal starts with a refresher—bringing back to the early and “potentially innocent" days of Facebook and the iPhone—then, he soon shows how these new technologies took the lead by dictating how we behave and how we feel by pushing us to overuse their products for as long as possible. Interesting story about how NYU professor Adam Alter shifted his research topic after getting “trapped” for 6 uninterrupted hours playing a game on his phone during a cross-country flight. Newport then explains 2 of the main forces used by technology companies to encourage behavior addiction: the need for social approval and positive reinforcement.[Chapter 2] Here is a primer on digital minimalism. We learn that "to reestablish control, we need to move beyond tweaks and instead rebuild our relationship with technology from scratch, using our deeply held values as a foundation.” Cal explains why digital minimalism works through 3 principles. [1] The first principle argues that, when we clutter our time and attention with many apps, social networks, and services, we create an overall negative cost compared to the benefits of each individual item in isolation. I was absolutely delighted to read his arguments by sharing Henry Thoreau’s decision to live for two years in a cabin near the Walden Pond. Thoreau's book, Walden, has actually impacted my life tremendously when I first read as a freshmen in college. [2] The second principle says that besides choosing a technology that supports our values, we should also think how we should use them to extract full benefits—optimizing, therefore, the returns. Here Cal shows how “the law of diminishing returns” can be directly correlated with potential negative effects when technology usage surpass the benefits they can generate. [3] The last principle shows that being more intentional about how we engage with new technologies is one way to become sincerely satisfied. For that, the author illustrates the Amish's approach towards technology: “they start with the things they value most, then work backward to ask whether a given new technology performs more harm than good with respect to their values.”[Chapter 3] In this chapter Cal shares a system for digital decluttering by transforming our relationship with technology. He encourages us to apply a rapid transformation: “something that occurs in a short period of time and is executed with enough conviction that the results are likely to stick.” He divides the process in 3 steps. [1] The first one is to establish which ones of the new “optional” technologies we can step away from without creating major problems in either our professional or personal life. [2] The second step is to take the leap and give ourselves a 30-day break while we rediscover the activities generate real satisfaction without being attached to our devices. [3] The final step is the reintroduction, building it from the scratch, following the principles previously explained in chapter 2 by choosing carefully the apps/tools and using them with a deeper sense of purpose.[Chapter 4] This is most probably my favorite chapter, where we learn the value of solitude. Cal starts by sharing an interesting story of President Lincoln’s decision to reside in a cottage during months at time, communicating back and forth to the White House on horseback. The author then shares the benefits of solitude such as being a prerequisite for original and creative thoughts, as well as a deeper appreciation for interpersonal connections when they occur. He then moves gears towards how solitude depravation has impacted our lives, showing, for example, that the rise in anxiety-related problems among students coincide with the use of smartphones and social media. At the end of the chapter we learn 3 practices to foster more solitude moments in our daily lives: [1] To leave our phones and devices at home. [2] To go on long walks. [3] To spend time journaling. They all make sense to me—more important, though, they can generate extra benefits once we build a positive habit.[Chapter 5] Now we jump to a chapter rich in social psychology lessons. We first learn how our brains evolved to desire social interactions, but differently than the rich face-to-face encounters, during the last decade or so we have been bombarded by digital communication tools, encouraging interactions through short, text-based messages and approval clicks. At the end Cal offers practices to develop meaningful “conversation-centric communication”. They range from avoiding clicking the “like” button to holding more meaningful conversations during office hours.[Chapter 6] Now we jump to an empowering chapter. We learn to cultivate high-quality leisure time at the same time we declutter the low-quality digital distractions from our lives. They both, in fact, work together in order to create a more purposeful habit. This chapter is filled with real life examples of successful stories where helpful lessons are drawn at the end of each example. Like in the previous chapters, Cal doesn’t share only examples, but also practical ways to adopt his claims. My favorite suggestion is about “schedule in advance the time we spend on low-quality leisure.”[Chapter 7] The final chapter is about building a more resistant mindset to understand and therefore avoid “the fragile attention economics that support companies like Facebook helps reveal an important strategy for succeeding with digital minimalism.” Here practices are provided as tactics when further discipline is required: [1] Delete social media from our phone to remove the ability to access them at any time. If we are going to use social medial, we should access them through a web browser. [2] Turn our devices into purposeful tools, diminishing the number of things they enable us to do. On Cal's own words “I’m not talking about occasionally blocking some sites when working on a particularly hard project. I want you instead to think about these services as being blocked by default, and made available to you on an intentional schedule.” [3] To use social media like a social media professional does. [4] To embrace the slow media consumption by maximizing the quality of what we consume. [5] Making the hard choice to switch from smartphone to a “dumb” phone.FINAL THOUGHTSWell, it doesn’t matter where in the spectrum we fall as long as we vow [draw a line] to move the needle towards a more meaningful and intentional technology usage, diminishing our “natural” tendency to become dependent on digital devices. While reading Digital Minimalism I thought about titles that could complement the content. The book Essentialism, by Greg McKeown, is definitely the one who comes to mind first. It helped me focus on less but more important tasks, giving clarity to what matters most. Originals, by Adam Grant, helped me see the world of creativity through a different angle by being more true to who we are. The latest book Atomic Habits, by James Clear, has already influenced me to build better and more meaningful habits during the last 3 months. It can be an extremely helpful source to apply the lessons from Chapter 6. Last, if you would like to learn a bit more about electromagnetic fields and how we can minimize the dangers look no further than The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs, by Nicolas Pineault.I hope the review helps you in some way.Take good care,Haical

Cal Newport is one of my favorite thinkers. He got his Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT and is now a Professor at Georgetown. He’s also a bestselling author of a number of books including one of my top all-time favorites: Deep Work.Given the fact that the fastest way to Optimize your life is to STOP doing things that are sub-optimal AND the fact that (for nearly all of us) our use of technology is the #1 thing that “Needs work!,” I think it’s SUPER important for us to figure out how to best use all the technology available to us WITHOUT becoming lost in a tsunami of inputs.Enter: Our new philosophy of technology use: Digital Minimalism.Enter: My strong recommendation of the book.If you’ve been looking for a coherent approach on how to, as per the sub-title of the book, Choose a Focused Life in a Noisy World, I think you’ll love Digital Minimalism as much as I did.

If you already want to curb the role of digital stuff in your life, you won't get that much value out of this book.Cal makes a great case for WHY to pursue digital minimalism. But I already know why -- my digital addictions are messing up my life. What I wanted to know is HOW.On that, Cal doesn't have as much to say. A few tips -- mostly the "digital declutter," a 30-day moratorium on the digital services in your life -- are pretty useful. For one, it finally convinced me to buy Freedom, an app that regulates your internet use.The rest of the book is thickly padded with anecdotes. They had me flipping pages, wishing we could get to the point.$15 can either get you this book, or half of a year of Freedom. If I could roll back the clock I know where I'd put my money.

This is a great and very readable book that'll probably change how you relate to social media and your phone. You should read it ASAP and I'll be recommending it to everyone I know.Unlike a lot of authors, Cal Newport actually walks the walk too. You don't get tenure at Georgetown AND write a couple bestselling books (with kids) unless you really have your act together. But ... I had two issues with the book. (1) it wasn't organized as well as it could have been, and (2) it contradicted itself in minor ways. The biggest example of the latter is when, early on, Newport bashes on the tips/tricks/hacks ("turn off notifications") that are occasionally recommended to people trying to spend less time with their phone, before later giving many similar tips and tricks (good ones to be sure) himself. The book also has a sort of weird structure -- I figured Part 1 would be the philosophy of it all, where Part 2 would be the implementation, but instead you get the philosophy + the details of the "30 Day Declutter" (which Newport has talked about in interviews leading up to the book) in Part 1, then a detour discussion of leisure, then back to some very good points about the economics of attention + social media to wrap things up.It's all very good, and like I said, you should definitely read it (I could see myself reading it multiple times), but reluctantly I'd say those two things are enough to dock a star.

So nice to read a book about a boy of color that has nothing to do with the fact that he is a boy of color...no themes of racism, slavery etc. Just a sweet and beautiful book.

Yes, I have now read this marvelous, happy, sweet and clever new book by Peter H. Reynolds that many already love. Dear Jerome, unlike other collectors who collect things like bird feathers and baseball cards, collects words. And what happens when he has thousands, has organized them and they spill? Magical things happen because Jerome begins to string his words together, words he had not imagined side by side. They become poems and songs, powerful words connected like "I'm Sorry" and "You matter". The ending challenge surprises and pleases, a message from Jerome to the whole world. Peter H. Reynolds creates stories for everyone, young child to adult. They fill hearts and put smiles on faces.

This book is a must for parents and teachers wanting to convey the importance and fun of acquiring and using words and how some words can become favorites and how valuable they are to Jerome, the main character in the story, to share “...what he was thinking, feeling, and dreaming.” The book creates an environment to prompt curiosity and explore a variety of words and how they categorically fit together for their purposes or perhaps just because they’re fun to use or say. Words are tools. Sometimes we forget to convey this to kids. This book does a good job of getting that message across through the story of lovable Jerome and his word collection.

My granddaughter, aged five, is also a word collector. She is fascinated by words and so this book delighted her.

This book was a hit with my kids (6 and 3). They were super curious about Jerome's hobby, and they thought he was an interesting kid. It's a great book to talk about with your kids. It gets them thinking about what they like, how they can express that (collecting, talking about it, writing things down, learning more, etc.), what words they think are interesting, and just generally how you can interact with other people to make the world a better place. I also love that the main character is a boy of color, and his race is not the subject of the story. We need more of those kinds of stories!

Love this book. Cute little story for kids along with them being able to hear different words. I loved reading it to my 9 month old. Love most of all Peter Reynolds books.

Wonderful story about how different people collect different things that are meaningful to them. As a teacher, I love to see this child so passionate about words and how much of an impact they have, and it is nice to see a boy of color as the main character.

What a lovely book! Great story, great words, non preachy sharing lesson, especially great for passionate book and word lovers of all ages, even preschoolers. We don’t get tired of reading it over and over.

This is an amazing work!!! Previously unavailable, this book is full of the anointing. Every book that I read with Smith Wigglesworth stirs the Holy Spirit in me as I read them. This one is no exeption. For anyone who has a hunger for the Holy Spirit, I recommend this book fully to everyone who is wanting more in their Christian walk and yearning for more power in their Christian life. This book is filled not only with Smith Wigglesworth's personal testimonies which are vivid and demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit, but also filled with scriptures. Through these powerful testimonies, you will learn to experience the power, intimacy and the truth of the Holy Spirit as every Child of God is commended to experience. I also enjoyed the parts where Wigglesworth writes out his interpretation of tongues, where he prays in the will of God and interprets it and puts it in the written page. Very Powerful !

So full of good and truth. 100 years later these truths and words are like today. The same issues, concerns, needs, and wants all presented in an easy good read. It’s refreshing and focused. It’s hard not to put it down, but you must to absorb its goodness. It is charismatic for the beginner and advanced.

Once you get used to the author's style of writing this book reads well. I found the material inspiring. If you are looking for more of your spiritual walk you must read this book.

These ideas should be timeless. However I did feel like I was reading something from a historic manuscript rather than something relevant today. Perhaps a an updated edition with scripture from a contemporary Bible rather than the KJV and updated examples would make the truths of this book more palatable to a 21st century reader.

This book is inspiring and to the point. It is great for preachers, teachers and other leaders in the church. It talks about the Holy Ghost being the power that God gave to those that live for Him... a great book.

Refreshing perspective on the "Deeper Life". Without a doubt, Wigglesworth was a pioneer and an example of what can be done as we would submit ourselves to the Father through Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. May his tribe increase! Without a doubt, he has very much fruit!

Wonderful book. Smith Wigglesworth was a great teacher. His legacy lives on in his writings and teachings. You will learn a great deal from his books, teachings.

Anyone longing for the baptism of the Holy Spirit or wanting to learn more this book will not only teach you and answer questions, but will make you hungry for more of God in your everyday life.

Peggy Schuyler and her sisters are close. They're the daughters of General Schuyler, an important military man, who's given them an upbringing filled with books and information. Angelica is the beautiful bold one and Eliza is the angelic sweet one with the good heart. Peggy keeps wondering where that leaves her. She's looking for her place in life and finds it in a time of war. Peggy is intelligent and she's a brilliant strategist. She constantly finds herself in the middle of conspiracies and witnesses several battles. Peggy can stand her ground and her terrific brain and quick wit are her specialty, but also the reason some men are finding her difficult to handle.Love is the reason the Schuyler sisters have eventually separated. Angelica elopes and Eliza falls in love with the charismatic Alexander Hamilton. Because Eliza is popular and has many suitors, Hamilton asks Peggy to help him win her sister's heart. He's a clever man and Peggy finds him an interesting companion. Talking to him is never boring and even though his advice can be hurtful, he doesn't give it with that intention. Alexander Hamilton manages to find a place in each Schuyler sister's heart. In a time of war long absences are normal and everyone's life is in danger. Will Peggy be able to contribute to the defeat of the enemy and is there a chance her wishes for the future will come true?Hamilton and Peggy! is a fantastic gripping story. I was fascinated by the strong, proud and incredibly smart Peggy. She can stand up for herself, she's loyal to her family and even though she wants to be loved more than anything else in the world, she knows her duty to her country comes first. I absolutely loved her fierce personality. Peggy might think she's existing in the shadows of her popular sisters, but she isn't. She's a force to be reckoned with and she's special just like her sisters. I loved their connection, it isn't always easy having to compete with two older sisters who can't do anything wrong, but love and family always wins. I enjoyed reading about their bond, their personal growth and their political visions. I love strong heroines and Hamilton and Peggy! definitely delivers in that area.L.M. Elliott has written an interesting story. I loved how well she's done her research. It's visible in every sentence of Hamilton and Peggy! Peggy helps General Schuyler with his work, which gives a lot of insight in the war. The book is set in the last quarter of the eighteenth century and America is in turmoil. L.M. Elliott describes the chaos and losses, the difficulties of war and finding funds to fight, the strategies needed to defeat the enemy and much much more in a terrific detailed and vivid way. I learned a lot while reading this book, while I was enthralled by the compelling story at the same time. I love it when a book teaches me something and spellbinds me completely as well. Hamilton and Peggy! has incredible main characters, they're multilayered with intriguing minds and fabulous conversational skills. I highly recommend this amazing book that captivated me from beginning to end.

Was a much appreciated Christmas gift!

Very interesting historical content with excerpts from letters Hamilton and others wrote. Enjoyed it.

Love it

This was an enjoyable read -- fun and really gets into the characters. However, interesting as Peggy Schuyler might be, the really interesting Peggy of the Revolution was Peggy Shippen, the woman behind Benedict Arnold's plot. When you finish this book, you can find out more about Peggy Shippen in this great book: Treacherous Beauty: Peggy Shippen, The Woman Behind Benedict Arnold's Plot To Betray America

L. M. Elliot’s latest brilliant piece of historical fiction for young adults, “Hamilton and Peggy! A Revolutionary Friendship,” is a fascinating study of the life and loves of Peggy Schuyler. She was the daughter of a famous Revolutionary War general and counter-intelligence agent, the sister of two equally important women of the era, and the romantic partner of two significant revolutionary and post-revolutionary men.The Peggy Schuyler of “Hamilton and Peggy” was a woman both very much of her time and very much ahead of her time. She was brilliant, independent, witty, strong — and a victim of the limitations that shackled the women of America in 1776. Elliot provides us enlightening glimpses of Peggy’s courage and strength — a dangerous trip through a deadly storm with enemies all around her; the defense of her home during an attack by British forces; the stubborn, constant support of the cause of the Revolution despite the ubiquitous threats of treasonous and cruel betrayals — like those of Benedict Arnold.Yet above all, this is a love story: the love of three sisters, all brilliant, all beautiful, all devoted to each other regardless of obstacles and personal difficulties; the love between an idealistic young woman and her father; the loves of that same young woman and the men who felt and returned her passion; and the love of the country and the cause.Elliot displays a unique talent for framing her story, her fictional events, with pieces of historical fact. In an earlier novel, “Suspect Red,” she began each chapter about events during the McCarthy Era (the 1950s) with actual headlines and articles that appeared during that fearful time. Here, she begins each chapter with a letter, none written by Peggy herself, but each one an important contribution to a real understanding of events surrounding the Revolution, events which describe and clarify Peggy’s character, and events which help us to understand the feelings, the beliefs, the motivations, and the actions of the people who made America possible: Hamilton, Washington, General Schuyler, Burr, Arnold, Lafayette — and the incredible Schuyler sisters. Finally, “Hamilton and Peggy” is a must-read for all of us who want to comprehend the significance of the #MeToo movement. And that should be all of us. Peggy Schuyler represents every woman who aspires to be everything she can be, and her life is a lesson we cannot afford to ignore. (JK)

I had the lovely opportunity of meeting L.M. Elliott at a book festival. The more she spoke about writing historical fiction on a panel, the more I wanted to read this book. And understand, I already really wanted to read this book. That and attend her panel. Hamilton and Peggy! mainly follows Peggy Schuyler as she witnesses a series of important events that helped Revolutionaries win the American Revolution. The narrative read more like historical nonfiction, which was great. I found moments where I learned a lot while other moments I chuckled glad I already knew certain facts. In addition, the world building is fantastic. Now this is coming from somebody who talks about medical history in the 18th C at a museum. L.M. Elliot brilliantly sprinkled small moments that really helped immersed the reader in the 1700s. My favorite moment though was Peggy visiting a hospital tent and catching site of a doctor trepaning a soldier. Lastly, I know most readers will read this for Hamilton, but I think you should also make sure you learn more about the Baroness Riedesel because she is an incredible woman who makes a guest appearance in this book.
